Laser-induced damage in cold-sprayed composite coatings

2011

International audience; Ag-Ni composite coatings were achieved using the cold spray process. In this work, two blends were sprayed to lead to coatings with different mechanical properties, which corresponded to either a fine or a coarse microstructure. These coatings were studied using SEM and X-ray microtomography (XMT) to determine the best coating quality through characterization of particle-to-particle bonding. The fine microstructure showed better properties than the coarse microstructure. To avoid time-consuming characterization techniques such as SEM and XMT, an innovative laser characterization test was developed. The principle of this test is based on the thermal shock-induced by a…

Evidence for the verwey transition in highly nonstoichiometric nanometric fe-based ferrites

2001

The nanometric scale allows an investigation of the Verwey transition: the impact of varying degree of oxidation of Fe cations on this transition was studied by means of zero-field-cooled superconducting quantum interference device measurements in nanometric highly nonstoichiometric particles of pure and Ti-substituted magnetite synthesized using soft chemistry route. It is clearly shown that (i) there is a shift of the transition towards higher temperatures for nanometer scaled compounds and (ii) the amplitude, the temperature, and the order of the transition are only depending on the number of ${\mathrm{Fe}}^{2+}{/\mathrm{F}\mathrm{e}}^{3+}$ pairs in octahedral coordination.

Evidence of Band Bending Induced by Hole Trapping at MAPbI3 Perovskite / Metal Interface

2016

International audience; Electron injection by tunneling from a gold electrode and hole transport properties in polycrystalline MAPbI3 has been investigated using variable temperature experiments and numerical simulations. The presence of a large and unexpected band bending at the Au/MAPbI3 interface is revealed and attributed to the trapping of holes, which enhances the injection of electrons via tunneling. These results elucidate the role of volume and interface defects in state-of-the-art hybrid perovskite semiconductors.

Analysis of the thermo-mechanical behaviour of the DEMO Water-Cooled Lithium Lead breeding blanket module under normal operation steady state conditi…

2015

Within the framework of DEMO R&D activities, a research cooperation has been launched between ENEA, the University of Palermo and CEA to investigate the thermo-mechanical behaviour of the outboard equatorial module of the DEMO1 Water-Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) blanket under normal operation steady state scenario. The research campaign has been carried out following a theoretical-computational approach based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) and adopting a qualified commercial FEM code. In particular, two different 3D FEM models (Model 1 and Model 2), reproducing respectively the central and the lateral poloidal-radial slices of the WCLL blanket module, have been set up. A particular attent…

On the thermal and thermomechanical assessment of the “Optimized Conservative” helium-cooled lithium lead breeding blanket concept for DEMO

2018

Abstract Within the framework of EUROfusion R&D activities a research campaign has been performed at CEA-Saclay, in close collaboration with the University of Palermo, in order to investigate thermal and thermomechanical performances of the “Optimized Conservative” concept of DEMO Helium-Cooled Lithium Lead breeding blanket (HCLL). Attention has been paid to the HCLL outboard equatorial module (OEM) when subjected to the steady state nominal loading scenario. To this purpose three simplified 3D models, characterized by an increasing level of detail, have been set-up taking into account, firstly, a single radial-toroidal slice, then a basic module geometric unity composed by two adjacent sli…

Nanoscale structural and electrical properties of graphene grown on AlGaN by catalyst-free chemical vapor deposition

2020

The integration of graphene (Gr) with nitride semiconductors is highly interesting for applications in high-power/high-frequency electronics and optoelectronics. In this work, we demonstrated the direct growth of Gr on Al0.5Ga0.5N/sapphire templates by propane (C3H8) chemical vapor deposition (CVD) at temperature of 1350{\deg}C. After optimization of the C3H8 flow rate, a uniform and conformal Gr coverage was achieved, which proved beneficial to prevent degradation of AlGaN morphology. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) revealed Ga loss and partial oxidation of Al in the near-surface AlGaN region. Such chemical modification of a 2 nm thick AlGaN surface region was confirmed by cross-sec…

Characterization process to measure the electrical contact resistance of Gas Diffusion Layers under mechanical static compressive loads

2016

AEM2016. International conference on Advanced Energy Materials, University of Surrey, Guildford, ROYAUME-UNI, 12-/09/2016 - 14/09/2016; Recent research has identified the mechanical properties of the fuel cell internal components (in particular, the Gas Diffusion Layers - GDLs) as key-parameters to obtain high final performances of the generator. The mechanical compression modulus of these components, the stability of their mechanical properties with respect to temperature and humidity, and their ability to interact with water have an impact on the electrical contact resistances in the stack and, by consequence, on the overall performance of the electric generator. Reducing the losses by co…

Pre-Stressed Sub-Surface Contribution on Bulk Diffusion in Metallic Solids

2011

Our recent modelling works and corresponding numerical simulations realized to describe the UO2 oxidation processes confirm the theory showing that an applied mechanical strain can strongly affect the local oxygen diffusion in a stressed solid. This result allows us to assume that stress field, previously applied at the surface of a metallic sample on several microns, will delay the degradation during its oxidation. Considering this hypothesis, we implemented a FEM simulation code developed in our laboratory to numerically investigate some different stress fields applied on a sample sub-surface, that might significantly modify the volume diffusion of oxygen during the oxidation process. The…

Gas sensing properties of multiwall carbon nanotubes decorated with rhodium nanoparticles

2011

International audience; In the present work, multiwalled carbon nanotubes were decorated with rhodium nanoparticles using a colloidal solution in the post-discharge of an RF atmospheric plasma of argon (Ar) or argon/oxygen (Ar:O 2). The properties of these hybrid materials towards the room temperature detection of NO 2 , C 2 H 4 , CO, C 6 H 6 and moisture were investigated and discussed in view of compositional and morphological studies. It was found that the presence of oxygen in the plasma treatment is essential to significantly enhance the gas response of Rh-decorated multiwalled carbon nanotubes and to avoid response saturation even at low gas/vapor concentrations. These desirable effec…
