AbstractWhile understanding the properties of materials under stress is fundamentally important, designing experiments to probe the effects of large tensile stress is difficult. Here tensile stress is created in thin films of potassium (up to 4 atomic layers) by epitaxial growth on a rigid support, graphite. We find that this “simple” metal shows a long-range, periodic “herringbone” reconstruction, observed in 2- and 3- (but not 1- and 4-) layer films by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Such a pattern has never been observed in a simple metal. Density functional theory (DFT)simulations indicate that the reconstruction consists of self-aligned stripes of enhanced atom den…

A new CdTe/ZnO columnar composite film for Eta-solar cells

2002

Abstract First results of CdTe deposition on ZnO films consisting of free standing single crystalline columns of several micrometers height and ∼100– 200 nm diameter are presented. The ZnO films have been obtained by electrochemical deposition on conductive glass. Morphology, structural and optical properties of the nanostructured columnar CdTe/ZnO composite films have been studied. The cadmium telluride ( 40 nm thick) deposited by vapor-phase epitaxy under dynamical vacuum is lining the ZnO columns as a continuous smooth thin film with conformal coverage. The polycrystalline CdTe layer is a mixture of cubic and hexagonal phases and is semiconductor with a direct band gap optical transition…

Pd@Fe2O3 Superparticles with Enhanced Peroxidase Activity by Solution Phase Epitaxial Growth

2017

Compared to conventional deposition techniques for the epitaxial growth of metal oxide structures on a bulk metal substrate, wet-chemical synthesis based on a dispersible template offers advantages such as low cost, high throughput, and the capability to prepare metal/metal oxide nanostructures with controllable size and morphology. However, the synthesis of such organized multicomponent architectures is difficult because the size and morphology of the components are dictated by the interplay of interfacial strain and facet-specific reactivity. Here we show that solution-processable two-dimensional Pd nanotetrahedra and nanoplates can be used to direct the epitaxial growth of γ-Fe2O3 nanoro…

Structural characterization of one-dimensional ZnO-based nanostructures grown by MOCVD

2010

Various one-dimensional (1D) ZnO-based nanostructures, including ZnO nano-wires (NWs) grown using vapour-liquid-solid (VLS) process, ZnO/ZnSe core/shell, nitrogen-doped ZnO and ZnMgO NWs were grown by metalorganic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis is presented. For all the samples, a high crystalline quality is observed. Some features are emphasized such as the gold contamination of ZnO wires grown under the metal droplets in the VLS process. It is concluded that MOCVD is a suitable technique for the realization of original ZnO nanodevices.

Study of the recombination around the excitonic region of MBE ZnSe:Cl thin films

2008

The recombination processes around the excitonic region of undoped ZnSe and chlorine doped ZnSe thin films were studied by continuous-wave photoluminescence (cw-PL) and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopies. Samples with different chlorine concentration were obtained by varying the temperature of the Cl source. The evolution of the PL signal and its decay time were analyzed as a function of temperature. Activation energy (Ea) values associated to the quenching of the D0X and band-to-band emission were obtained from the temperature dependent cw-PL experiments. The activation energy was lower for the film with higher Cl content. The characteristic exponential decay time (TPL) …

Element-Specific Magnetic and Electronic Properties of Epitaxial Heusler Films

2015

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) provides an experimental access to element-specific electronic properties of thin epitaxial films of Heusler alloys. The combination of bulk-sensitive transmission and surface-sensitive electron yield methods reveals quantitative information on bulk and interface properties. Extreme cases of magnetically dead and life layers at interfaces illustrate the high potential of XMCD. The dependence of XMCD on disorder, structure and composition is discussed as well as dynamic properties investigated by a combination of ferromagnetic resonance and XMCD. Examples are shown where spectroscopic information provided by XMCD is exploited to discuss subtle changes…

Domain structure of epitaxial SrRuO3 thin films

2005

Growth of multidomains in epitaxial thin-film oxides is known to have a detrimental effect on some functional properties, and, thus, efforts are done to suppress them. It is commonly accepted that optimal properties of the metallic and ferromagnetic $\mathrm{SrRu}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ (SRO) epitaxies can only be obtained if vicinal $\mathrm{SrTi}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ (001) (STO) substrates are used. It is believed that this results from the suppression of multidomain structure in the SRO film. Here we revise this important issue. Nanometric films of SRO have been grown on STO(001) vicinal substrates with miscut $({\ensuremath{\theta}}_{V})$ angles in the $\ensuremath{\sim}0.04\ifmmode^\circ\else\te…
