Kundmannia sicula (L.) DC: a rich source of germacrene D
2017
AbstractObjective: Kundmannia sicula is an herbaceous plant belonging to the family Apiaceae and is distributed in the Mediterranean coastal areas where it occurs in arid places. In this work, we have analysed the essential oil distilled from the aerial parts of K. sicula from Sicily (Italy) and its biological activity. Methods: GC-MS was used to analyze the chemical composition, whereas its antioxidant capacity and cytotoxicity on three human tumour cells (A375, MDA MB-231 and HCT 116) were evaluated by DPPH, ABTS, FRAP and MTT methods, respectively. Result: The essential oil resulted very rich of the sesquiterpene hydrocarbon germacrene D (81.2%). Moreover, the K. sicula oil displayed rel…
Biological properties of a biomaterial obtained from Syzygium aromaticum
2019
Studies performed on Essential oil of Syzygium aromaticum (EOSa) from the Romanian market indicate a relative content of 73.18% in Eugenol. Due to this compound, the antioxidant activity determined...
Comparative chemical composition, free radical-scavenging and cytotoxic properties of essential oils of six Stachys species from different regions of…
2009
Abstract The chemical composition of essential oils of six Stachys species, S. cretica L. ssp. vacillans Rech. fil., S. germanica L., S. hydrophila Boiss., S. nivea Labill., S. palustris L. and S. spinosa L., obtained by hydrodistillation, was studied by GC and GC–MS. All the oils have in common a great percentage of fatty acids and esters (24.2–58.5%) and a high amount of sesquiterpenes (16–35.9%), with the exception of the oil from S. palustris , which consisted mainly of carbonylic compounds (25.4%). The antioxidant activity by DPPH test and the antiproliferative activity on a series of human cancer cell lines (C32, amelanotic melanoma and ACHN, renal cell adenocarcinoma) were investigat…
Omega-3 rich foods: Durum wheat spaghetti fortified with Portulaca oleracea
2020
Abstract Portulaca oleracea is an annual succulent herb (purslane) with high antioxidant properties and high content of essential ω-3 and ω-6 fatty acids, ascorbic acid, α-tocopherol and β-carotene. In the present study, sensorial and chemical analyses of uncooked and cooked durum wheat pasta fortified with purslane from three different Sicilian areas and at three different concentrations (5, 10 and 15%) were estimated. The sensorial analysis showed that the scores of the overall acceptance decreased considerably in pasta with 15% purslane, while consumers appreciated pasta samples with 10% purslane. Chemical analysis highlighted that the addition of purslane gave pasta samples the potentia…
Phytochemical, ecological and antioxidant evaluation of wild Sicilian thyme: Thymbra capitata (L.) Cav.
2016
In a broad survey conducted throughout the Sicily region, 45 different sites were identified where thyme grows wild. All the biotypes collected were classified as Thymbra capitata (L.) Cav. (syn. Thymus capitatus (L.) Hoffmanns. & Link). Cluster analysis based on the main morphological characteristics of the plant led to the division of the biotypes into 3 major groups. All samples were analyzed for their secondary phytochemical metabolites identified in the extracts and the essential oils. LC-UV-DAD/ESI-MS and GC-FID/GC-MS have been applied to characterize the extracts and the essential oils, respectively. In the extracts, 15 flavonoid derivatives with taxifolin-di-O-glucoside and thymusin…
Screening of antioxidant potentials and bioactive properties of the extracts obtained from two Centaurea L. species (C. kroumirensis coss. and C. sic…
2020
Herbal medicines, dietary supplements, or infusions with health promoting effects can note strong consumer demand. Hence, researchers and scientists have been increasingly focusing on the promotion of medicinal plants. In this respect, the present study has the evaluation of the biological properties of different extracts (hexane, chloroform, methanol, ultrasonic, essential oil, and supercritical) obtained from two Centaurea species (C. kroumirensis (Coss.) and C. sicula L. subsp sicula) as purpose. Antioxidative activities were assessed by in vitro assays including total phenolic content, free radical scavenging assay and ferric ion reducing power. Among the fourteen extracts examined, the…
Phytochemical and pharmacological properties of essential oils from Cedrus species
2017
Natural products frequently exert pharmacological activities. The present review gives an overview of the ethnobotany, phytochemistry and pharmacology of the Cedrus genus, e.g. cytotoxic, spasmolytic immunomodulatory, antiallergic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities. Cancer patients frequently seek remedies from traditional medicinal plants that are believed to exert less side effects than conventional therapy with synthetic drugs. A long-lasting goal of anti-cancer and anti-microbial therapy research is to find compounds with reduced side effects compared to currently approved drugs. In this respect, Cedrus species might be of interest. The essential oil isolated from Cedrus libani…
