Nanoemulsions are kinetically stabilized emulsions with droplet sizes in the nanometer scale. These nanodroplets are able to confine spaces in which reactions of polymerization or precipitation can take place, leading to the formation of particles and capsules that can act as nanocarriers for biomedical applications. This review discusses the different possibilities of using nanoemulsions for preparing biomedical nanocarriers. According to the chemical nature, nanocarriers prepared in nanoemulsions are classified in polymeric, inorganic, or hybrid. The objective of the study was to investigate a more effective use of commercially available biomass pellets (wheat straw, wood, peat) using microwave pretreatment to improve heat production. Pellets were pretreated using the originally designed microwave torrefaction device. The effects of microwave (mw) pretreatment were quantified, providing measurements of the weight loss and elemental composition of pellets and estimating the effect of mw pretreatment on their porosity, surface area and calorific values at pretreatment temperatures of T = 448–553 K. International audience; Based on the skin effect, our recent developments using scanning microwave microscopy lead to propose a non-destructive method to detect located buried defect in metal samples like stainless steel. A 3D tomography is possible by taking advantage of microwave measurement, using a vector network analyzer in bandwidth frequencies, and the nanometer resolution positioning capabilities with atomic force microscopy. Cobalt hexacyanoferrate (CoHCF) nanoparticles have been synthesized by mixing aqueous solutions of K3Fe(CN)6 and CoCl2 under vigorous stirring at different temperatures and following two different procedures, drop-by-drop or immediate mixing. The resulting CoHCF nanoparticles, with dimensions of several tens of nanometers, were characterized using TEM, SEM-EDX, IR, and XRD. Their electrochemical behavior was investigated in comparison with the CoHCF powder bulk compound. Synthesis, characterization and magnetism of monodispersed water soluble palladium nanoparticles

Water soluble, monodispersed Pd nanoparticles with a narrow particle size distribution have been successfully synthesized by controlled reduction of [PdCl4]2−. The resulting aqueous colloids are stable over extended periods of time and can be prepared at high nanoparticle loading (20 g/L of Pd) with no agglomeration. The size of the nanoparticles can be reduced from the nanometer (ca. 3.5 nm) to the sub-nanometer size range (ca. 0.9 nm). Detailed magnetic characterization indicated that the larger, 3.5 nm nanoparticles show ferromagnetic properties at room temperature, while the sub-nanometric ones lose this magnetic behavior.
Adhesion and Friction Forces between Spherical Micrometer-Sized Particles

An experimental setup, based on the principles of atomic force microscopy (AFM), was used to measure directly the adhesion and rolling-friction forces between individual silica microspheres of radii between 0.5 and 2.5 \ensuremath{\mu}m. It showed that the linear dependence of the pull-off force on the particle radius is still valid for micron-sized particles. Rolling-friction forces between silica microspheres were measured for the first time by combining AFM methods and optical microscopy: They are $\ensuremath{\sim}100$ times lower than the corresponding adhesion forces.
Variable Thickness Porous Anodic Alumina/Metal Film Bilayers for Optimization of Plasmonic Scattering by Nanoholes on Mirror

Continuously variable thickness porous anodic aluminum oxide (PAAO) films were obtained using electrochemical oxidation of bulk aluminum sheet while both electrodes were simultaneously withdrawn from the electrolyte solution. The thickness gradient was controlled by the withdrawal rate (1–10 mm/min range) and thickness variation demonstrated from below 50 nm to above 1 micrometer. The thickness increased linearly with the sample lateral coordinate, whereas the nanopore structure (diameter and interpore distance) remained unchanged.
