A look into the future of the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe : an expert consultation

2021

How will the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic develop in the coming months and years? Based on an expert survey, we examine key aspects that are likely to influence COVID-19 in Europe. The future challenges and developments will strongly depend on the progress of national and global vaccination programs, the emergence and spread of variants of concern, and public responses to nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). In the short term, many people are still unvaccinated, VOCs continue to emerge and spread, and mobility and population mixing is expected to increase over the summer. Therefore, policies that lift restrictions too much and too early risk another damaging wave. This ch…

Vor-und Nachteile der Digitalisierung bei der Arbeit von Sprachexpertinnen und –experten

2020

While the future of work is discussed from many perspectives, discussions on how an individual's own work tasks are changing are relatively rare (Dufva et al. 2017). This article builds on our alumni study (Selkälä, Tahkokorpi & Virtaluoto 2018), in which we discovered that despite the perceived changes in working life - often called the disruption of work - the foreign language alumni of the Oulu University have found permanent positions in the traditional professions of language graduates with relative ease. For them, the disruption of work has not affected employability or the terms of employment. To investigate how working life has changed for people in these professions, we gathered gr…

A Finnish viewpoint on professionalism in early childhood education

2008

ABSTRACT This article discusses professionalism in early childhood education through the analytical tool of a research‐based multi‐level perspective that sees this as a cultural, communal, organisational, and individual phenomenon. Starting from an understanding of professionalism derived from a model of professional expertise, the article discusses the Finnish day‐care context at the social and cultural level, followed by a discussion of field‐specific knowledge as a tool for building professionalism. Professionalism is further examined as it plays out in the employees’ working environment, the day‐care centre and its working culture and from the perspective of the professionals themselves…

Selection by committee: Anonymity and gratitude

2018

Abstract What kind of candidate is selected into a job when the principal has to appoint a committee to measure the candidates’ ability and select a winner? We find that if the committee takes into account the candidate’s gratitude towards them, a candidate with less than first best ability will be selected. A relevant exception may occur if the first best is the overall best candidate. First best selection is always achieved if the committee is anonymous to the candidates. If the committee is not detached enough from the candidates then delegation fares even worse than random selection.

Chercheurs en éducation et décideurs : des relations conflictuelles, mais nécessaires

1999

International audience; This papers reviews the causes of the bad relationships between education researchers and decision-makers in educational policy. The conflicts are related to the objectives, the priorities, the deadlines, the dissemination of educational research, as well as the identification of best avenues for improving the performances of the educational systems. One observes nevertheless that in the long run, educational research provides results which are finally integrated in the implementation of educational policies.

SEAI: Social Emotional Artificial Intelligence Based on Damasio’s Theory of Mind

2018

A socially intelligent robot must be capable to extract meaningful information in real-time from the social environment and react accordingly with coherent human-like behaviour. Moreover, it should be able to internalise this information, to reason on it at a higher abstract level, build its own opinions independently and then automatically bias the decision-making according to its unique experience. In the last decades, neuroscience research highlighted the link between the evolution of such complex behaviour and the evolution of a certain level of consciousness, which cannot leave out of a body that feels emotions as discriminants and prompters. In order to develop cognitive systems for s…

Exploring the construction of professional expertise in HRD: analysis of four HR developers’ work histories and career stories

2002

Explores the construction of professional expertise in HRD work through the examination of the careers of four individual HR developers who are employed as full‐time HRD personnel in various work organisations and already possess considerable experience of HRD work. A narrative approach to the development of professional expertise was applied and the building materials for professional expertise in HRD work retrospectively extracted from the developers’ formal work histories and career stories. The empirical data used consist of interviews with 20 full‐time HR developers working in large enterprises and governmental organisations in Finland. The present analysis is based on four career stor…
