UNRAVELLING THE ROLES OF THE NUCLEAR PROTEIN 1 DURING ER-STRESS INDUCTION
2020
Background: NUPR1 was described as a transcriptional factor involved in the regulation of various cellular stress-response genes, playing a crucial role in the condition of the endoplasmic-reticulum (ER) stress, thus emerging as a common molecular factor of different pathologies, obesity, hepatic steatosis, and cancer. In the present work we aim to explore how NUPR1 interacts with some pivotal genes that are the major modulators of the ER stress and metabolic cell functions. In particular we investigated the biochemical and molecular effects arising from the loss of NUPR1 in ER stress physiological conditions. Methods: We used prolonged high fat diet (HFD) feeding to induce ER stress physio…
Local interest groups and the perception of power in Spanish cities
2018
Studies on local interest groups have generated a considerable number of theories on urban power that have eventually become the basis of far-reaching approaches on democracy and collective action. Such literature has been especially concerned with discovering who governs the city, paving the way for discussions on elitism, pluralism and urban regimes. Some approaches consider that the business elite dominates local politics, while other theories assert that interests other than business (neighbors, environmentalists, faith-based organizations, civic groups) have been gaining relevance and access to local government. The POLLEADER survey (2006) provided data on the influence of certain soci…
Stochastic order characterization of uniform integrability and tightness
2013
We show that a family of random variables is uniformly integrable if and only if it is stochastically bounded in the increasing convex order by an integrable random variable. This result is complemented by proving analogous statements for the strong stochastic order and for power-integrable dominating random variables. Especially, we show that whenever a family of random variables is stochastically bounded by a p-integrable random variable for some p>1, there is no distinction between the strong order and the increasing convex order. These results also yield new characterizations of relative compactness in Wasserstein and Prohorov metrics.
Explaining German outward FDI in the EU: a reassessment using Bayesian model averaging and GLM estimators
2021
The last decades have seen an increasing interest in FDI and the process of production fragmentation. This has been particularly important for Germany as the core of the European Union (EU) production hub. This paper attempts to provide a deeper under standing of the drivers of German outward FDI in the EU for the period 1996–2012 by tackling the two main challenges faced in the modelization of FDI, namely the variable selection problem and the choice of the estimation method. For that purpose, we first extend previous BMA analysis developed by Camarero et al. (Econ Model 83:326–345, 2019) by including country-pair-fixed effects to select the appropriate set of variables. Second, we compare…
The special issue on FDI and multinational corporations: An introduction
2019
Abstract This paper offers an introduction to the special issue on FDI and multinational corporations: http://www.economics-ejournal.org/special-areas/special-issues/fdi-and-multinational-corporations. It summarizes the contents of the five papers included, and relates them to the recent literature on the subject.
cIAP1-dependent TRAF2 degradation regulates the differentiation of monocytes into macrophages and their response to CD40 ligand.
2008
AbstractPeripheral blood monocytes are plastic cells that migrate to tissues and differentiate into various cell types, including macrophages, dendritic cells, and osteoclasts. We have described the migration of cellular inhibitor of apoptosis protein 1 (cIAP1), a member of the IAP family of proteins, from the nucleus to the Golgi apparatus in monocytes undergoing differentiation into macrophages. Here we show that, once in the cytoplasm, cIAP1 is involved in the degradation of the adaptor protein tumor necrosis factor receptor–associated factor 2 (TRAF2) by the proteosomal machinery. Inhibition of cIAP1 prevents the decrease in TRAF2 expression that characterizes macrophage formation. We d…
Regulation of B cell homeostasis and activation by the tumor suppressor gene CYLD
2007
B cell homeostasis is regulated by multiple signaling processes, including nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB), BAFF-, and B cell receptor signaling. Conditional disruption of genes involved in these pathways has shed light on the mechanisms governing signaling from the cell surface to the nucleus. We describe a novel mouse strain that expresses solely and excessively a naturally occurring splice variant of CYLD (CYLD(ex7/8) mice), which is a deubiquitinating enzyme that is integral to NF-kappaB signaling. This shorter CYLD protein lacks the TRAF2 and NEMO binding sites present in full-length CYLD. A dramatic expansion of mature B lymphocyte populations in all peripheral lymphoid organs occur…
Hematopoietic stem cell quiescence and function are controlled by the CYLD–TRAF2–p38MAPK pathway
2015
Tesio at al. identify a novel pathway controlled by the tumor suppressor and deubiquitinase cylindromatosis (CYLD), which is involved in the regulation of hematopoietic stem cell quiescence and repopulation potential.
An inter-laboratory validation of methods of lipid peroxidation measurement in UVA-treated human plasma samples
2010
Lipid peroxidation products like malondialdehyde, 4-hydroxynonenal and F2-isoprostanes are widely used as markers of oxidative stress in vitro and in vivo. This study reports the results of a multi-laboratory validation study by COST Action B35 to assess inter-laboratory and intra-laboratory variation in the measurement of lipid peroxidation. Human plasma samples were exposed to UVA irradiation at different doses (0, 15 J, 20 J), encoded and shipped to 15 laboratories, where analyses of malondialdehyde, 4-hydroxynonenal and isoprostanes were conducted. The results demonstrate a low within-day-variation and a good correlation of results observed on two different days. However, high coefficie…
