Wave Energy Assessment around the Aegadian Islands (Sicily)
2019
This paper presents the estimation of the wave energy potential around the Aegadian islands (Italy), carried out on the basis of high resolution wave hindcast. This reanalysis was developed employing Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) and WAVEWATCH III ® models for the modelling of the atmosphere and the waves, respectively. Wave climate has been determined using the above-mentioned 32-year dataset covering the years from 1979 to 2010. To improve the information about wave characteristics regarding spatial details, i.e., increasing wave model resolution, especially in the nearshore region around the islands, a SWAN (Simulating WAves Nearshore) wave propagation model was used. Results obtai…
Incentives in Corporate Governance: The Role of Self-Regulation
2004
Corporate governance stems from the interplay of legal norms, security regulation, self-regulation and best practices. Recent scandals and frauds have forced governments to update laws on corporate governance: the legislation process has been very fast in some countries, others have lagged. Law and regulation intervene and become effective only ex-post, when damages have been done and malpractice is self-evident. On the contrary, self-regulation is a quicker and more flexible response to changing market conditions and of great impact on the relationship between firms and their environment. A self-regulatory organization (SRO) such as the stock exchange could administer the screening device,…
A stochastic approach for self-healing capability evaluation in active islanded AC/DC hybrid microgrids
2023
This paper aims to implement a resilience assessment in AC/DC hybrid microgrids using a stochastic simulation approach. Self-healing measures including load shedding, control of distributed generation and flexible devices, like Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and Electrical Vehicles (EVs), are simulated to enable AC/DC hybrid microgrids to supply critical loads in islanded mode, assuming a disconnection of these microgrids from the main AC grid due to a fault. To perform this analysis, a two-stage process is proposed: first, a Monte-Carlo simulation-based stochastic approach is adopted to generate samples to simulate intermittent loads, power generation from Renewable Energy Sources (RESs), an…
Dupuytren contracture in diabetic hand
2011
Dupuytren's disease (DD) is a fibroproliferative disorder of unknown origin causing palmar nodules and flexion contracture of the digits. About 5% of individuals with DD are diabetic, with an increased prevalence that is proportional to the duration of the diabetes. The association with diabetes mellitus is well recorded, with a reported prevalence of between 3% and 32%. This review considers the evidence behind the association between DD and diabetes mellitus, considering the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations and therapies that can be found in the literature.
A dissipated energy comparison to evaluate fatigue resistance using 2PB
2012
Flexural fatigue due to repeated traffic loading is a process of cumulative damage and one of the main failure modes of flexible pavement structures. Typically, micro-cracks originate at the bottom of an asphalt concrete layer due to horizontal tensile strains. Micro-cracking starts to propagate towards the upper layers under repeated loading which can lead to pavement failure. Different approaches are usually used to characterise fatigue resistance in asphalt mixtures including the phenomenological approach, the fracture mechanics approach and the dissipated energy approach. This paper presents a comparison of fatigue resistance calculated for different dissipated energy models using 2 Poi…

Phonon-driven spin-Floquet magneto-valleytronics in MoS2
2018
AbstractTwo-dimensional materials equipped with strong spin–orbit coupling can display novel electronic, spintronic, and topological properties originating from the breaking of time or inversion symmetry. A lot of interest has focused on the valley degrees of freedom that can be used to encode binary information. By performing ab initio time-dependent density functional simulation on MoS2, here we show that the spin is not only locked to the valley momenta but strongly coupled to the optical E″ phonon that lifts the lattice mirror symmetry. Once the phonon is pumped so as to break time-reversal symmetry, the resulting Floquet spectra of the phonon-dressed spins carry a net out-of-plane magn…
Mid-infrared and Raman spectrometry for quality control of pesticide formulations
2005
This article deals with recent developments in the use of vibrational spectrometry for the quantitative analysis of active components in commercial pesticide formulations. We review the techniques, such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and FT-Raman spectrometries, and measurement modes, such as stopped flow or flow injection. FTIR is being used increasingly in the determination of pesticides in agrochemical products because of its relatively short analysis time. However, FT-Raman spectrometry provides direct analysis of solid and aqueous samples. It is therefore clear that these techniques enable fast, non-destructive, precise and accurate measurements, so vibrational spectrometry appea…
Enhancement of heat exchanger thermal hydraulic performance using aluminum foam
2018
Abstract This paper deals with an experimental study of a turbulent forced convection in a rectangular channel partly fitted with aluminum metallic foam blocks. Experiments were carried out on samples having a constant porosity of 93.8%, different grades of 5, 20 and 40 PPI, and three different height ratios of 0.6, 0.8 and 1. The blocks were arranged in a baffle like configuration. A constant heat flux of 2 W/cm2 was applied on the bottom wall of the test section, while air velocity was varied from 1 to 5 m·s−1. Temperatures of the wall along the flow direction as well as those of the inlet and outlet sections have been measured. Additionally, pressure drop measurements across the aluminum…
Computerized dynamic fluid simulation (CFD) for measuring the influence of the cab deflector on the aerodynamics of trucks
2021
This paper refers to how the cab deflector of trucks can influence the aerodynamic coefficient. The first part of the paper includes some generalities taken from previous studies, regarding the types of solutions to improve aerodynamics for trucks. The second part of the paper is a more practical one and has two main chapters: modeling and simulation of modeled parts. In this sense, a truck and 3 cabin deflectors were schematically modeled in Catia v5. After assembly in the Catia v5 program, the impact of the cabin deflector was analyzed. Thus, a computerized dynamic fluid simulation (CFD) was performed using the specific module in Ansys. The simulation included the CFD analysis of the four…
