Rare Cancers Europe (RCE) methodological recommendations for clinical studies in rare cancers: A European consensus position paper

While they account for one-fifth of new cancer cases, rare cancers are difficult to study. A higher than average degree of uncertainty should be accommodated for clinical as well as for population-based decision making. Rules of rational decision making in conditions of uncertainty should be rigorously followed and would need widely informative clinical trials. In principle, any piece of new evidence would need to be exploited in rare cancers. Methodologies to explicitly weigh and combine all the available evidence should be refined, and the Bayesian logic can be instrumental to this end. Positioning of the cross-stitch on the modified Kessler core tendon suture

[EN] Cryopreserved human tendons were sutured with different variations of a modified Kessler-type grasping suture in a series of different designs in order to assess the influence of the distance between the cross-stitch on the core suture (5 and 10 mm from the cut tendon edge) on the peripheral suture. An original mathematical model was employed to explain the mechanical behavior (strength, deformation, and distribution of load) of the different suture designs. The effect of the peripheral epitendinous suture, combined with the distance of the core suture, was evaluated. Estuarine sediment quality assessment by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy

Partial least squares Fourier-transform infrared (PLS-FTIR) models were developed for the quality assessment of estuarine sediments through the evaluation of several physico-chemical parameters. Models were based on the chemometric treatment of attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectra directly obtained from samples previously lyophilized and sieved through a lower than 63 μm grid. Spectra were scanned from 3997 to 523 cm-1, averaging 36 scans per spectrum with a nominal resolution of 8 cm-1. Design of a narrow-band filter based on the Brewster phenomenon for microwave applications

A high-efficiency narrow-band filter based on a Dielectric Frequency-Selective Surface (DFSS) has been predicted theoretically for oblique plane-wave incidence. A DFSS showing total reflection at a frequency of 10.5 GHz, based on the Brewster phenomenon for TM polarization, has been designed with a single dielectric grating, showing extremely low-reflectance sidebands adjacent to the resonance peak. This work proposes an empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method to assess the strength of the interactions between heart period (HP) and systolic arterial pressure (SAP) variability. EMD was exploited to decompose the original series (OR) into its first, and fastest, intrinsic mode function (IMF1) and the residual (RES) computed by subtracting the IMF1 from OR. EMD procedure was applied to both HP and SAP variability series. We exploit a recently proposed framework for assessing causal influences in the frequency domain to construct the partial information decomposition (PID) for informational circuits of three variables, thus obtaining the spectral decomposition of redundancy, synergy and unique information. The approach is applied to heart period (HP), systolic pressure (SP) and respiration (RESP) variability series measured in healthy subjects in baseline and head up tilt conditions. Integrating the informational quantities in the respiratory band, the total influence from RESP to HP does not change in the two conditions. El presente texto plantea una serie de reflexiones sobre la figura del pintor Lluís Dalmau, uno de los introductores de la pintura gótica flamenca en la Corona de Aragón. El análisis surge a partir de la presentación de un nuevo documento inédito sobre un retablo contratado en 1451 por Isabel de Requesens, esposa del gobernador de Cataluña, Galceran de Requesens, para la baronía de Molins de Rei (Barcelona). El documento sitúa al pintor realizando este encargo en Valencia, lo que supone un regreso hasta ahora desconocido a su ciudad natal tras haber realizado la tabla de la Mare de Déu dels Consellers, de Barcelona (1443-1445), y el retablo de san Baudilio, de Sant Boi de Llobregat (1448). …
