An isolate of Fusarium solani, NRRL 18883, produces the natural phytotoxin 2,5-anhydro-ᴅ-glucitol (AhG). This fungal metabolite inhibited the growth of roots (I50 of 1.6 mᴍ), butit did nothave any in vitro inhibitory activity. The mechanism of action of AhG requires enzymatic phosphorylation by plant glycolytic kinases to yield AhG-1,6-bisphosphate (AhG-1,6- bisP), an inhibitor of Fru-1,6-bisP aldolase. AhG-1,6-bisP had an I50 value of 570 μᴍ on aldolase activity, and it competed with Fru-1,6-bisP for the catalytic site on the enzyme, with a Ki value of 103 μᴍ. Glycolytic flux in white muscle can be increased several-hundredfold by exercise. Phosphofructokinase (PFK; EC 2.7.1.11) is a key, regulatory enzyme of glycolysis, but how its activity in muscle is controlled is not fully, understood. In order not to neglect integrative aspects of metabolic regulation, we have studied in frogs (Rana temporaria) a physiological form of muscle work (swimming) that can be triggered like a reflex. We analysed swimming to fatigue in well rested frogs, recovery from exercise, and repeated exercise after 2 h of recovery. Glycolysis is crucial for sperm functions (motility and fertilization), but how this pathway is regulated in spermatozoa is not clear. This prompted to study the location and the regulatory properties of 6-phosphofructokinase (PFK, EC 2.7.1.11), the most important element for control of glycolytic flux. Unlike some other glycolytic enzymes, PFK showed no tight binding to sperm structures. It could readily be extracted from ejaculated boar spermatozoa by sonication and was then chromatographically purified. Erythrocyten konnen Lactat bilden aus Glucose, Fructose, Sorbit, Xylit und Ribit. Mannit wird nicht umgesetzt. Die Kombinationen Xylit + Glucose, Xylit + Fructose und Sorbit + Glucose ergeben additive Lactatbildung. Bei den Kombinationen Xylit + Sorbit, Xylit + Ribit und Glucose + Fructose addiert sich die Lactatbildung nicht. Uber Konsequenzen dieser Befunde fur die parenterale Therapie wird diskutiert.

Summary The chemical composition of the Zymomonas mobilis biomass and the culture liquid after ethanol and levan synthesis were studied. The activities of intra- and extracellular levansucrase produced by the Z. mobilis strain 113 ”S” under optimum conditions both for levan and fructooligosaccharide (FOS) synthesis were also determined. It was shown that levan production relates to the reduction of the carbohydrate and lipid content in the biomass by increasing the nucleic acid and protein content. Summary Twenty-six enological Hanseniaspora isolates were identified by ITS PCR-RFLP and D1/D2 domain of 26S rDNA sequencing and assayed for exocellular protease production. Based on qualitative data, six isolates, belonging to H. guilliermondii, H. valbyensis and H. occidentalis species, were selected to continue the study. Analytical procedure was optimised, and protease activities were quantified and characterised on the basis of different biotechnological factors. Suitability of non-glucose-carbohydrates for parenteral nutrition

Postoperative parenteral nutrition can only be optimally effective if the characteristics of post-traumatic metabolism are taken into account. Two main possibilities are discussed for the carbohydrate component of parenteral nutrition during this phase: glucose with high doses of insulin or non-glucose carbohydrates (sugar substitutes) possibly in a suitable combination with glucose. The risks as well as the technical and organisational problems involved in the use of them are discussed and the authors prefer the second of the two alternatives. Changes in antioxidant defense are unknown in hypertension associated with metabolic disorders induced by high-fructose feeding. Based upon efficacy/tolerability, topiramate 100 mg/day (50 mg BID) is the recommended target dose for most patients with migraine.
