Natural Anti-oxidants for Bio-polymeric Materials
2017
In this work, three different bio-polymers, i.e. a commercial starch-based polymer (Mater-Bi®) a bio-polyester (PLA), and a bio-polyether (PEO) were additivated with quercetin, a natural flavonoid antioxidants, in order to formulate biobased films for eco-sustainable packaging and outdoor applications. The photo-oxidation behavior of unstabilized and quercetin stabilized films has been evaluated and compared with that of films additivated with a commercial synthetic light stabilizer. Obtained results show that quercetin molecules are able to slow down the photodegradation rate of all investigated bio-polymeric films, opening new avenues in the formulation of fully renewable polymer-based sy…
Molecular topology: a useful tool for the search of new antibacterials.
2000
Molecular topology has been applied to find new lead antibacterial compounds. Among the selected compounds, hesperidin, neohesperidin and Mordant Brown 24 stand out, with minimum inhibitory concentrations 90, MIC90<0.3 mg / mL.
Influence of solvents on the antioxidant property of flavonoids.
2003
In polyphenols redox systems, the solvent plays a fundamental role in the chemical behaviour of these compounds. Antioxidants can react in different ways with the prooxidant molecules. We have found differences in the antioxidant capacity of flavonoids such as naringin, neohesperidin, neoericitrin, hesperidin, narirutin didymin and the related flavones naringenin, hesperetin eriodictyol and isosakuratenin, when they are in the presence of radicals and solved in water or in an alcohol mixture.
Green extraction approach for the recovery of polyphenols from Croatian olive leaves (Olea europea)
2017
Abstract Pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) is shown as an innovative green technology for the effective extraction of the various phytochemicals from food by-products, therefore the aims of this study were to evaluate the application of PLE to engineer green extracts of Croatian olive leaves ( Olea europaea , cv. Oblica) for potential industrial production (functional foods/pharmaceuticals). PLE was conducted under various cycle numbers (1, 2), temperature (60, 80, 100 °C) and static times (5, 10, 15 min). Obtained extracts were characterized in terms of: (i) total polyphenols (TP); (ii) total flavonoids (TF); hydroxycinnamic acids (HCA); and (iv) flavonols (FLA). Response surface methodo…
Red : far-red light ratio and UV-B radiation: their effects on leaf phenolics and growth of silver birch seedlings
2004
The natural variation in quantity and quality of light modifies plant morphology, growth rate and concentration of biochemicals. The aim of two growth-room experiments was to study the combined effects of red (R) and far-red (FR) light and ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation on the concentrations of leaf phenolics and growth and morphology of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) seedlings. Analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography showed that the leaves exposed to supplemental FR relative to R contained higher concentrations of total chlorogenic acids and a cinnamic acid derivative than the leaves treated with supplemental R relative to FR. In contrast, concentration of a flavonoid, querc…
Quercetin as natural stabilizing agent for bio-polymer
2014
The introduction of antioxidants in polymers is the main way to prevent or delay the degradation process. In particular natural antioxidants receive attention in the food industry also because of their presumed safety. In this work bio-polymers, i.e. a commercial starch-based polymer (Mater-Bi®) and a bio-polyester (PLA), and a bio-polyether (PEO) were additivated with quercetin, a natural flavonoid antioxidants, in order to formulate bio-based films for ecosustainable packaging and outdoor applications. The photo-oxidation behavior of unstabilized and quercetin stabilized films was analyzed and compared with the behavior of films additivated with a commercial synthetic light stabilizer. Th…
Technological development and functional properties of an apple snack rich in flavonoid from mandarin juice
2012
Abstract The development of functional foods has evolved considerably over the years. The technological ability to produce a food with enhanced physiologically active compounds has grown significantly. The aim of this work was to study the incorporation of the beneficial compounds from mandarin low pulp juice into an apple snack using vacuum impregnation technology and to test if the final product exhibited the functional properties and components of both raw materials. Forty grams of the final product made using mandarin juice homogenized at 15 MPa could provide the same quantity of hesperidin as 250 mL of fresh mandarin juice. We also performed a chromatographic determination of the compo…
Biological Activity of Flavonoids Copper Complexes
2005
Three flavonoid copper(II) complexes Cu2(quercetin)(CH3COO)3(CH3OH) (1), Cu(anthrarufin)(CH3COO)·1/2H2O (2) and Cu(naringin)(OCH3)(CH3OH)2 (3) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, electronic absorption and EPR (X-band) spectroscopy. The complexes have a strong protective action over the Δsod1 mutant of S. cerevisiae against reactive oxygen radicals generated by an external source of free radicals (H2O2 or the superoxide-generating, menadione). On the other hand, the complexes cleave DNA efficiently even in the absence of reducing agents. The main reactive oxygen species responsible for the DNA strand cleavage have been determined using radical scavengers. A pro…
Flavones, sesquiterpene lactones and glycosides isolated from Centaurea aspera var. Stenophylla
1984
Abstract From the alcoholic extract of Centaurea aspera var. stenophylla benzoic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, apigenin, 6-methoxyluteolin, 11,13-dehydromelitensin, melitensin, stenophyliolide, ethyl-7-O-apigenin-glucuronate and the glucosides of sitosterol and stigmasterol were isolated and characterized. Stenophyllolide was shown to be 9,15-dihydroxygermacra-1(10),4,11-trien-12,6-olide.
Sesquiterpene lactones from Artemisia hispanica
1989
Abstract Extraction of aerial parts of Artemisia hispanica and chromatographic separation yielded the eight known sesquiterpene lactones costunolide, artemorin, anhydroverlotorin, tamaulipin A, reynosin, santamarin, matricarin and deacetylmatricarin, the flavone cirsimaritin, zingerone, 1-hydroxy-α-bisabololoxide A acetate and the new germacranolide 2α-hydroxyartemorin.
