Workers’ Institutes: envisioned community, living community

2015

This article focuses on the Workers’ Institutes (WI), one of the most important educational initiatives undertaken by the Spanish Republic during the Civil War (1936–1939). After framing their creation within the context of European trends in higher education for the working classes and within the Spanish socio-political context, this article examines the role of these institutions as an envisioned community and as a living community, dedicated to serving the Republic as an imagined community. Legal documents, political and pedagogical speeches, as well as opinion pieces, portray the WI as an envisioned community. As such, they represented the transformations and disseminated the aspiration…

Effects of Equivalence Framing on the Perceived Truth of Political Messages and the Trustworthiness of Politicians

2017

Recent studies in psychology have shown that the framing of a message affects judgments about its truth, as negatively framed statements are perceived as more trustworthy than formally equivalent, positively framed statements. The current work examines this effect in the contexts of political communication and public opinion. The results of three experiments show that equivalence framing affects both the perceived truth of political messages and the trustworthiness of its source, and that one cause of this effect is that recipients have learned to associate negativity with news and positivity with persuasive communication through media exposure. Consequently, we find that positively framing…

Human traffickers frequently take advantage of operative protocols that make them unpunishable pursuant the Italian Criminal Law because according to Art. 6 of the Italian Penal Code and International Convention on the High Sea jurisdictional powers cannot be exercised when the conduct is committed on the High Sea. So illustrating the territorial limitations of the efficacy of Criminal Law the research focuses on the hermeneutical solution given by the Court of Cassation that apparently with the intent of pursuing a more effectivity of the Criminal response recurred to the controversial category of the indirect offender in order to sanction smuggling conducts that enjoy the rescue intervention of the Italian authorities to reach their criminal aims. In turn in order to better identify the Italian jurisdiction in the crime of Art. 12 T.U. imm. I propose to correctly apply the concorso di persone (art. 110 c.p.) and the reato eventualmente permanente. The difficulties of a dogmatic framing together with the trend towards a universalistic validity of the jurisdictional powers when human rights are involved may recommend an interpretation of Art. 7 of the Italian Penal Code to cover a wider protection of human rights according to interpretive solutions of § 6 of the German Penal Code.Settore IUS/17 - Diritto Penale

The effect of depression and the reframing strategy on the level of satisfaction with family life in infertile and post-miscarriage couples: dyadic a…

2021

Modelling Offices Through Discourse Analysis: A Comparison and Evaluation of SAMPO with OSSAD and ICN

1992

In a previous paper the importance of framing office communications in terms of discourse analysis was explored. 2 It also presented an approach based on speech acts and conversations to allow this framing to occur. The approach was termed SAMPO. In this paper, we continue the discussion on discourse analysis by comparing SAMPO with two prominent office modelling approaches, Information Control Nets (ICN) and OSSAD, and discuss its merits in modelling office communications.

Reframing health care through social media

2015

This teaching case presents the story of the Hospital Campus (HC) project and its effort to reframe health-care services for the elderly through the adoption of social media. In a world of global ageing, in which an increased number of elderly patients will be cared for by a shrinking number of workers, a primary challenge is how to use technology to provide better and more efficient services for the elderly. The HC campus project focuses on how to involve information technology-illiterate elderly patients and their social networks in the design and use of social media services to improve their quality of life. In describing the development of the project, we focus on the elderly patients’…

Then and Now: Comparing the Soviet and Post-Soviet Experience in Latvian Autobiographies

2009

The article deals with an autobiographical representation of diverse experiences. Namely, through the analysis of post-Soviet Latvian autobiographies the framing of the Soviet and Post-Soviet era is revealed. The article suggests that instead of using progressive fame, which might give a positive estimation of the Post-Soviet experience, the autobiographers largely employ a nostalgic frame and continuation frame. Likewise, I argue that there are certain contexts that generate different framing practices: on the one hand, we can observe a professional context, which is typical to the former Soviet public officials, whose autobiographies utilize the nostalgic frame; on the other hand, there i…

The Commission’s informal agenda-setting in the CFSP. Agenda leadership, coalition-building, and community framing

2020

This study contributes to the literature on informal governance by examining politics of informal agenda-setting in the European Commission. As a ‘hard case’, the paper examines how the European Commission exceeds limited legal Treaty provisions in foreign and security policy (CFSP). This system, where the Commission has come to play a more prominent role than stipulated in the treaties, is interpreted as a normalization of CFSP governance. Three complementary propositions on the informal agenda-setting role of the Commission are developed: agenda leadership (#1), coalition-building (#2), and community framing (#3). To illuminate these propositions, we examine their relevance across three e…

"""Fluidity and flexibility of """"belonging"""": Uses of the concept in contemporary research"""

2016

Studies framing “belonging” as a key focus and a central concept of research have increased significantly in the 2000s. This article explores the dimensions of belonging as a scholarly concept. The investigation is based on a qualitative content analysis of articles published in academic journals covering a large number of different disciplines. The article poses and answers the following research questions: How is belonging understood and used in contemporary research? What added value does the concept bring to scholarly discussions? In the analysis, five topoi of conceptualizing belonging – spatiality, intersectionality, multiplicity, materiality, and non-belonging – were identified. Afte…

A dynamic performance management approach to frame corruption in public procurement: a case study

2021

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to frame the causal relationships between corruption in public procurement and performance of local governments. Design/methodology/approach An outcome-based dynamic performance management approach is adopted to explore a representative case study of a small Italian municipality. The model is based on three sources: qualitative primary data generated by face-to-face convergent interviews; secondary data retrieved from documents describing legal cases linked to procurement and open-access repositories; and an extensive literature review. Findings Emphasizing the role of community civic morality systemically may help to understand some counterintuitive re…
