Plant extracts as green reductants for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles: lessons from chemical synthesis.

2018

The increasing use of silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) in daily-life applications, electronics, or catalysis calls for green and cost-efficient synthetic methods. Ag NPs are used especially in biomedicine because of their antibacterial, antifungal, or anticancer properties. Chemical synthesis allows tuning the particle morphology, size, and crystallinity, but requires toxic and hazardous chemicals. Bioinspired synthetic protocols have shown promise to minimize environmental impact, but biological protocols for the synthesis of Ag NPs lack control on the morphology and crystallinity. This review briefly compiles the chemical synthesis of Ag NPs and contrasts it with "green" protocols based on…

Induction of tolerogenic DCs: ‘you are what you eat’

2003

Abstract Dendritic cells (DCs) take up antigens using antigen receptors that can be divided into three major classes: C-type lectins, integrins and Fc receptors. These receptors facilitate effective presentation of MHC–peptide complexes to T cells, resulting in the induction of immune responses. However, we discuss recent evidence that some receptors also cause induction of tolerance. Signaling motifs within the receptors either block maturation of DCs or induce signals that render DCs tolerogenic. These DCs then either induce regulatory T cells or cause deletion of effector T cells, resulting in the induction of tolerance. Antigen receptors expressed by DCs might therefore have an importan…

Beads of Acryloylated Polyaminoacidic Matrices Containing 5-Fluorouracil for Drug Delivery

2002

Spherical polymeric microparticles have been prepared by a reverse phase suspension polymerization technique. The starting polymer was alpha,beta-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide (PHEA), partially derivatized with glycidylmethacrylate (GMA). PHEA-GMA copolymer (PHG) was crosslinked in the presence of N,N'-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) or N,N'-ethylenebisacrylamide (EBA). 5-fluorouracil was incorporated into PHG-DMAA or PHG-EBA beads both during and after the crosslinking process. Swelling studies revealed a high affinity toward aqueous medium, influenced by the presence of 5-fluorouracil. The in vitro release study showed that the release rate depends on the chemical structure of the beads…

Increase in stability and change in supramolecular structure of β-carotene through encapsulation into polylactic acid nanoparticles

2011

International audience; β-Carotene (BC) exhibits controversial antioxidant properties as it may act also as a prooxidant. Its stability toward oxidation depends on its dispersion form and can be increased through encapsulation. In this study, oxidation of BC from synthetic and natural origins was investigated after dispersion in Tween micelles or poly lactic acid (PLA) particles. Two oxidation systems were used: autooxidation and oxidation by xanthine oxidase-generated-reactive oxygen species. Results showed that synthetic BC formed nanometric negatively-charged particles in both Tween micelle and PLA systems, whereas the natural BC sample used was shown to be already pre-oxidised, forming …

Phenolic Compounds Characterization and Antioxidant Properties of Monocultivar Olive Oils from Northeast Algeria

2020

In Algeria, the olive tree is one of the main fruit species and plays a very important socioeconomic role. The objective of this study was firstly, to identify and quantify the phenolics of some Algerian olive oils, and secondly, to assess the antioxidant activity of the samples. The olive oils used in this study were derived from Algerian cultivars, including Tefahi, Gelb Elfarroudj, Chemlal, and imported cultivar Manzanilla and Zebboudj. For this purpose, gas chromatography&mdash

Dietary administration effects of exopolysaccharide from potential probiotic strains on immune and antioxidant status and nutritional value of Europe…

2020

The use of biological immunostimulants is considered a valuable practice to improve culture conditions in aquaculture sector that may help to increase production and maintain healthy environment. We undertook this study in order to evaluate the potential effect of the administration of two exopolysaccharides (EPS) "EPLB" and "EPB" derived from potential probiotic strains on immune and antioxidant status of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) larvae. In order to find out if the EPSs have an effect on the biochemical composition during the trial period, the nutritional value has been evaluated. The results revealed that expression levels of immune-relevant genes (infg, Il1b, Il8, Il6 …
