Numerical and experimental validation of a LiFePO<inf>4</inf> battery model at steady state and transient operations

2013

In the paper some of the battery models proposed in literature are analysed in order to predict the battery performance and, then, make sure that the Battery Management System (BMS) that is a key component to check and control the status of the batteries within their specified safe operating conditions, works in best conditions. In fact to reach an extended battery lifetime and increase the reliability of the system, is necessary to guarantee an accurate evaluation of the state of the whole stack of batteries to track their operations. Therefore, an accurate battery model that captures the dynamics of the battery is required. Lithium batteries are in particular considered because of their h…

Heat-to-current conversion of low-grade heat from a thermocapacitive cycle by supercapacitors

2015

Thermal energy is abundantly available, and especially low-grade heat is often wasted in industrial processes as a by-product. Tapping into this vast energy reservoir with cost-attractive technologies may become a key element for the transition to an energy-sustainable economy and society. We propose a novel heat-to-current converter which is based on the temperature dependence of the cell voltage of charged supercapacitors. Using a commercially available supercapacitor, we observed a thermal cell-voltage rise of around 0.6 mV K-1 over a temperature window of 0 degrees C to 65 degrees C. Within our theoretical model, this can be used to operate a Stirling-like charge-voltage cycle whose eff…

Decentralized on-site optimization of a battery storage system using one-way communication

2015

Intermittent renewable energy sources (e.g. wind, solar energy systems) have been providing an exponentially growing share of electricity generation. Due to their highly transient and stochastic nature, they pose substantial challenges for power grid operation. Power dispatched from these sources are uncontrolled and do not necessarily coincide with demand; this in turn affects power quality. Hence, extensive demand side management (DSM) is required. DSM relies on flexible loads as well as energy storage facilities. Furthermore, renewable power generation is by its very nature highly distributed and consists of large numbers of small units. These have a substantial effect on traditional pow…

On the regeneration of thermally regenerative ammonia batteries

2018

In the past few years, thermally regenerative ammonia battery (TRAB) has been proposed as an effective tool to recover waste heat at temperatures below 130 °C. Most of the literature available is devoted to the power production step, with less attention being given to the regeneration step (e.g. the removal of ammonia from the anolyte). In this paper, the TRAB is analyzed with particular attention to the regeneration step and to the study of various generation of energy-regeneration cycles. It was shown that approximately 90 °C is necessary for the regeneration step due to the fact that ammonia is present in the anolyte mainly as a complex. Various cycles were performed with success, demons…

β-Catenin Activation Regulates Tissue Growth Non–Cell Autonomously in the Hair Stem Cell Niche

2014

Coordinated Hair Growth Wnt/β-catenin signaling is a key pathway that plays a conserved role in regulating stem cell function during adult tissue regeneration. Using time-lapse imaging of live mice, Deschene et al. (p. 1353 ) show that genetic activation of β-catenin within hair follicle stem cells generates axes of hair growth by coordinated cell divisions and cell movements, even when the normal niches—the dermal papillae—are laser-ablated. Activated β-catenin enhances Wnt ligand secretion, and these ligands can then activate Wnt signaling in adjacent cells that do not have activated β-catenin, indicating how activated stem cells could influence neighboring cells during normal growth and …

Biomaterials in periapical regeneration after microsurgical endodontics: A narrative review

2021

Background: The objective of this narrative review was to analyze the available scientific evidence regarding the application of biomaterials in endodontic microsurgery and its influence in post-surgical tissue repair. Material and Methods: The review question was Do biomaterials used in endodontic microsurgery influence post-surgical tissue repair and regeneration? Systematic MEDLINE/PubMed review was used to evaluate and present the results. Results: The search yielded 131 references, 82 of which were selected for full text review after reading the abstracts. After a manual search in the references of the articles selected, 52 references were eliminated. Finally, 30 articles were selected…

Essential versus accessory aspects of cell death: recommendations of the NCCD 2015

2015

Cells exposed to extreme physicochemical or mechanical stimuli die in an uncontrollable manner, as a result of their immediate structural breakdown. Such an unavoidable variant of cellular demise is generally referred to as ?accidental cell death' (ACD). In most settings, however, cell death is initiated by a genetically encoded apparatus, correlating with the fact that its course can be altered by pharmacologic or genetic interventions. "Regulated cell death" (RCD) can occur as part of physiologic programs or can be activated once adaptive responses to perturbations of the extracellular or intracellular microenvironment fail. The biochemical phenomena that accompany RCD may be harnessed to…

Particles of vaterite, a metastable CaCO3polymorph, exhibit high biocompatibility for human osteoblasts and endothelial cells and may serve as a biom…

2018

We have previously described a promising alternative to conventional synthetic bone biomaterials using vaterite, a metastable CaCO3 polymorph that increases the local Ca2+ concentration in vitro and leads to an oversaturation of phosphate, the primary bone mineral. This stimulates a natural bone-like mineralisation in a short period of time. In this study, sterile and endotoxin-free vaterite particles were synthesised in a nearly quantitative yield. The 500-1,000 nm vaterite particles did not exhibit any cytotoxic effects as measured by MTS, lactate dehydrogenase, or crystal violet assays on the human osteoblast cell line (MG-63) exposed to concentrations up to 500 μg/ml vaterite up to 72 h…

On the search of the ideal barrier membrane for guided bone regeneration

2018

Background GBRs are essential procedures in implant dentistry and periodontology where barrier membranes play an important role by isolating soft tissue and allowing bone to grow. Not all membranes function the same way, as they differ from their origin and structure, it is important to understand how membranes behave and differ one from others in order to achieve a predictable treatment. Material and methods A systematic search on Medline by two independent reviewers was performed for articles published until July 2017 reporting the characteristics or properties of barrier membranes. The question that preceded the search was designed according to PICO rules. Results A total of 124 articles…
