Crop type and altitude are the main drivers of species composition of arable weed vegetation in Tajikistan

Summary The influence of broad-scale environmental factors on the species composition of segetal weed communities in Tajikistan was investigated. The research was conducted throughout the country, analysing plots of root crops as well as cereals from all phytogeographical regions of Tajikistan, with the exception of the eastern Pamir. The study was based on 440 phytosociological relevees sampled between 2009 and 2013 and analysed using direct and indirect ordinations. In the Sahel, wind erosion occurs particularly in cultivated fields. This work was leaded at Banizoumbou in Niger where wind erosion fluxes have been measured for six years. The aims of this study was i) to monitor crop residues cover on traditional field and to quantify its influence on wind erosion ii) to characterize the impacts of soils crusting on erosion flux, iii) to characterize the impact of herbaceous strips on wind flux. The free amino acid content in needles of Norway spruce trees (about 45-year-old) was determined by means of HPLC. The studied trees have been growing at a forestry site in the Black Forest which is characterized by a high impact of ozone and magnesium deficiency. Measurements were carried out on visibly healthy and on damaged trees on several dates during two vegetation periods and during the course of a day. The amino acids occurring at the highest concentrations were glutamate, arginine, aspartate, and glutamine. Characterization of Biodiesel from Vegetable Oil Using Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography

Biodiesel from vegetable oils has been analyzed and its suitability for internal combustion engines has been assessed. The Standard biofuel’s characteristics have been investigated. Gas chromatography (GC) tests were carried out to characterize the fatty acid behavior. It was found that the mass percentage of saturated fatty acids did not change substantially with time, while unsaturated fatty acids increased with time for both B100 and B30. An increase in density for B100 and B30 with time was noted. Biodiesel density was within the standardization. The calorific values of biodiesel and its blend increased with time. In vitro plant regeneration of caper (Capparis spinosa L.) from floral explants and genetic stability of regenerants

A new technique to regenerate caper plants (Capparis spinosa L. subsp. rupestris) starting from flower explant is reported. In vitro plant regeneration was attempted using stigma, anthers and unfertilized ovules of unopened flowers collected in the field. Plant regeneration was achieved from unfertilized ovules on MS medium supplemented with 88 mM sucrose and 13 lM 6-benzyladenine (BA). Abstract The genetic varieties of Spanish extra virgin olive oils (Arbequina, Hojiblanca and Picual) were predicted by direct infusion of the samples in the electrospray ionization source of a mass spectrometer, followed by linear discriminant analysis of the spectral data. The samples were 1:50 diluted (v/v) with an 85:15 propanol/methanol (v/v) mixture containing 40 mM KOH and infused. The abundances of the [M–H] − peaks of the free fatty acids (7 peaks) and 28 phenolic compounds (20 peaks) were measured. Bacterial communities in Arctic fjelds of Finnish Lapland are stable but highly pH-dependent

The seasonal and spatial variations of microbial communities in Arctic fjelds of Finnish Lapland were studied. Phospholipid fatty acid analysis (PLFA) and terminal restriction fragment analysis (T-RFLP) of amplified 16S rRNA genes were used to assess the effect of soil conditions and vegetation on microbial community structures along different altitudes of two fjelds, Saana and Jehkas. Terminal restriction fragments were additionally analysed from c . 160 cloned sequences and isolated bacterial strains and matched with those of soil DNA samples. Determination of major carotenoids in vegetables by capillary electrochromatography.

A simple and rapid method for the isocratic separation and determination of carotenoids (carotenes and xanthophylls) in vegetables by CEC is described. The capillary column (100 microm ID, 25 cm effective length) was packed with 3 microm Hypersil ODS particles. The optimized mobile phase contained 60% ACN, 35% THF and 5% of a 5 mM Tris aqueous buffer of pH 8. beta-Carotene, lycopene and lutein were separated with efficiencies of 66 000-128 000 plates/m within a short time (less than 12 min for the last peak eluted, 13/13'-cis-beta-carotene). Rapid evaluation of oxidised fatty acid concentration in virgin olive oil using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and multiple linear regression

Abstract Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), followed by multivariate treatment of spectral data, was used to evaluate the oxidised fatty acid (OFA) concentration in virgin olive oil samples characterised by different oxidative status. The entire FTIR spectra (4000–700 cm−1) of oils were divided in 25 wavelength regions. The normalised absorbances of the peak areas within these regions were used as predictors. In order to predict the OFA concentration, multiple linear regression (MLR) models were performed. Abstract A preliminary study using amino acid profiles to classify oils according to their botanical origin has been performed. Amino acid profiles were obtained from hydrolysis of proteins present in vegetable oils, and established by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with UV–vis detection. Proteins present in hazelnut, corn, soybean, olive, avocado, peanut and grapeseed oils were precipitated with acetone, and the residue was hydrolysed in acid medium.
