Comparison of inoculums in the removal of 2-butoxyethanol from air emissions by biotrickling filter: Performance and microbial monitoring
2014
2-butoxyethanol is one of the most used glycol ether in industrial activities and the treatment of air 2-butoxyethanol-emissions become necessary. Biotechnologies are potential treatment technologies due to their low operational costs. The use of two inoculums in the treatment of 2-butoxyethanol by biotrickling filters (BTFs) packed with polyurethane-foam was studied. A pure culture of Pseudomonas putida, previously adapted to 2-butoxyethanol, was used as inocula in a BTF operated in the University of Stuttgart. Fresh activated sludge from a municipal waste water treatment plant was used as inocula in a BTF operated in the University of Valencia. An empty bed residence time of 12.5 s and in…
Influence of lactose-citrate co-metabolism on the differences of growth and energetics in Leuconostoc lactis, Leuconostoc mesenteroides ssp. mesenter…
1999
International audience; The biodiversity of growth and energetics in Leuconostoc sp. has been studied in MRS lactose medium with and without citrate. On lactose alone, Ln. lactis has a growth rate double that of Ln. cremoris and Ln. mesenteroides. The pH is a more critical parameter for Ln. mesenteroides than for Ln. lactis or Ln. cremoris; without pH control Ln. mesenteroides is unable to acidify the medium under pH 4.5, while with pH control and as a consequence of a high Y(ATP) its growth is greater than Ln. lactis and Ln. cremoris. In general, lactose-citrate co-metabolism increases the growth rate, the biomass synthesis, the lactose utilisation ratio, and the production of lactate and …
Coupling of proton translocation through ATPase incorporated into supported lipid bilayers to an electrochemical process
1997
Abstract H+-ATPase is incorporated into solid-supported lipid bilayers separated from the gold support by a peptide spacer. The translocation of protons across the lipid film to the inner side is coupled to the discharge of protons at the gold surface. The overall process is investigated by square wave voltammetry (SWV) and double potential-pulse chronoamperometry (CA). As a result, the formation of a proton gradient is monitored by SWV whereas currents measured by CA monitor the stationary state when the enzyme activity is directly coupled to the charge transfer at the electrode. These currents markedly depend on the number of ATPases present in the bilayer.
Gravity-Driven Infiltration and Subsidence Phenomena in Posidonia oceanica Residues
2019
A simplified infiltration model for highly permeable porous media was introduced, assuming the matric potential gradient as negligible compared to the gravitational gradient. This model enabled us to determine the delay time, i.e., the time that the water front takes (from the beginning of rainfall) to reach the bottom of the highly permeable layer. Posidonia oceanica (Linnaeus) Delile residues were used as a porous media, in order to study the infiltration process that provides salt leaching under natural rainfall when these residues are arranged in a storage area, before reusing. By using a laboratory rainfall simulator, delay times were measured to verify the applicability of the aforeme…
PLLA-BASED SCAFFOLDS FOR OSTEOCHONDRAL TISSUE REGENERATION VIA THERMALLY INDUCED PHASE SEPARATION TECHNIQUE
Impact Assessment of Skidding Extraction: Effects on Physical and Chemical Properties of Forest Soils and on Maple Seedling Growing along the Skid Tr…
2019
Several studies investigated soil disturbances caused on skid trails by forest logging. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about the severity and the distance of disturbances along both sides from the trails. The aims of this study were: i) to investigate the changes in physical and chemical properties of soil along the sides of skidding trails
GHOST: GRADIENT HISTOGRAM OF SPECTRAL TEXTURE
2021
International audience; A gradient-based texture feature for hyperspectral image is formulated with straightforward application to grayscale and color images. Processed in full band, GHOST is expressed as a four-dimensional probability density distribution encompassing joint metrological assessment of spectral and spatial properties. Its performance is close to Opponent Band Local Binary Pattern (OBLBP) in HyTexiLa texture classification (91 %-99 % accuracy) with feature size 0.2 % of OBLBP's.
Influence of M23C6 carbides on the heterogeneous strain development in annealed 420 stainless steel
2020
Understanding the local strain enhancement and lattice distortion resulting from different microstructure features in metal alloys is crucial in many engineering processes. The development of heterogeneous strain not only plays an important role in the work hardening of the material but also in other processes such as recrystallization and damage inheritance and fracture. Isolating the contribution of precipitates to the development of heterogeneous strain can be challenging due to the presence of grain boundaries or other microstructure features that might cause ambiguous interpretation. In this work a statistical analysis of local strains measured by electron back scatter diffraction and …
Type V collagen-induced upregulation of capn2 (large subunit of m-calpain) gene expression and DNA fragmentation in 8701-BC breast cancer cells
2011
Abstract Type V collagen is known to be over-deposited in the stroma of ductal infiltrating carcinomas of the breast. When used as a substrate, type V collagen restrains growth and invasion, and affects gene expression of 8701-BC ductal infiltrating carcinomas cells. Here we supplement existing data by demonstrating type V collagen dependent upregulation of capn2 gene expression in 8701-BC cells through differential display-PCR and Western blot assays. Furthermore, we suggest that our data obtained by centrifugal sedimentation and electrophoresis strongly suggest a correlation between calpain overproduction and DNA fragmentation, since the incubation with calpain inhibitor partly reverts th…
A homemade device for linear sucrose gradients
2008
We have developed a simple and inexpensive device to obtain linear sucrose gradients with commonly used laboratory materials--a syringe, a flask, a plastic tube, and a piece of Pongo (Play-Doh). Refractive index values measured on sucrose fractions collected using our system demonstrate both the linearity and reliability of the gradients obtained.
