Fishery-induced selection for slow somatic growth in European eel

International audience; Both theoretical and experimental studies have shown that fishing mortality can induce adaptive responses in body growth rates of fishes in the opposite direction of natural selection. We compared body growth rates in European eel (Anguilla anguilla) from three Mediterranean stocks subject to different fishing pressure. Results are consistent with the hypotheses that i) fast-growing individuals are more likely to survive until sexual maturity than slow-growing ones under natural conditions (no fishing) and ii) fishing can select for slow-growing individuals by removing fast-growing ones. Abstract A fuzzy controller for a neutralization process is described. The controller was set up for a laboratory pilot plant. The approach is shown to be effective and can be extended to highly nonlinear and nonstationary processes. The “operator” knowledge encoded in the rules was obtained by several experimental runs of the system using manual control. Rules are composed using the max-min compositional rule of inference. The use of metarules, which depends on controller performance and on active disturbances, makes the controller behave like an adaptive controller. The external frame function in the control of pitch, register, and singing mode: Radiographic observations of a female singer

Summary This study investigates pitch control, register, and singing mode related movements of the laryngo-pharyngeal structures by radiographic methods. One trained female singer served as the subject. The results show that singing voice production involves complex movements in the laryngeal structures. Pitch related increase in the thyro-arytenoid distance (vocal fold length) is nonlinear, slowing down as pitch rises. Similar observations have been made earlier. At the highest pitches, a shortening of the distance can be seen, suggesting the use of alternative pitch control mechanisms. Electrochemical pH Control at Gold Nanowires

In this work, interdigitated arrays of nanowire electrodes are used with one array acting as the working electrode while the other is used to generate the required protons. Finite element simulations of the pH control electrodes were performed to provide insight on the generation and subsequent diffusion of protons. This informed the inter-tine spacing of the electrodes used.. This electrochemical pH control method was then used to enable the detection of analytes of interest.

The research theme developed during this thesis concerns the development of new hybrid ferrocene hybrid (P, N) ligands with controlled conformation, robust and stable to air. These hybrid tetradent ligands comprise two types of coordinating functions with distinct steric and electronic properties. Their coordination chemistry with metals such as gold or palladium has been studied and some isolated Au (I) complexes have been used in the arylation coupling catalysis of aryl iodides.

This paper presents a novel method for point-to-point path control for a hydraulic knuckle boom crane. The developed path control algorithm differs from previous solutions by operating in the actuator space instead of the joint space or Cartesian space of the crane. By operating in actuator space, almost all the parameters and constraints of the system become either linear or constant, which greatly reduces the complexity of both the control algorithm and path generator. Abstract In this paper, the robust fault-tolerant (FT) H ∞ control problem of active suspension systems with finite-frequency constraint is investigated. A full-car model is employed in the controller design such that the heave, pitch and roll motions can be simultaneously controlled. Both the actuator faults and external disturbances are considered in the controller synthesis. As the human body is more sensitive to the vertical vibration in 4–8 Hz, robust H ∞ control with this finite-frequency constraint is designed.
