Investigations for fine mapping of amplifications in chromosome 3q26.3-28 frequently occurring in squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck.
2002
Objective: Overrepresentations of chromosomal material on the long arm of chromosome 3 frequently occur in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. This experimental study was conducted for further fine mapping of these overrepresentations by interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) of tumor cells in cell lines. Methods: Seven cell lines derived from squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck were investigated by comparative genomic hybridization to analyze unbalanced chromosomal aberrations. Overrepresentations of chromosomal material on the telomeric part of the long arm of chromsome 3 were further analyzed by interphase FISH using…
Asymmetries in classically conditioned head movements and cingulate cortex slow potentials in cats.
1991
Presuming that conditioned head movements in the cat indicate a preference for a specific direction, asymmetries were also expected to be found in bilaterally recorded cingulate cortex slow potentials to a symmetrical tone stimulus during discriminative conditioning. Conditioned stimuli (CS, 1000 and 2500 Hz tones) were delivered through two miniature loudspeakers fitted to the head in front of both ears. The unconditioned stimulus (US) was an electrical stimulation of either the left or right lateral hypothalamus yielding, in addition to its rewarding effects, an unconditioned head turning response (UR) either to the left, right, forwards or upwards. Discrimination learning appeared as mor…
Influence of root width and dentin wall thickness evaluated by endoscopy upon the outcome of periapical surgery. A cohort study.
2020
Background: An analysis was made of the correlation between root width, the thickness of the remaining dentinal wall as determined by endoscopy, and the outcome of periapical surgery. Material and Methods: A retrospective cohort study was carried out involving patients subjected to periapical surgery between 2017 and 2019 at the University of Valencia (Valencia, Spain). One year after surgery, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was used to evaluate healing against the preoperative volumes. The maximum root width was measured on the postoperative CBCT scan at the apical section of the treated root. This measurement was transferred to the intraoperative endoscopic image, where the minimum r…
Blood Flow and Oxygenation Status of Head and Neck Carcinomas
1997
Solid tumors contain a significant fraction of microregions which are chronically or transiently hypoxic. Experimental evidence is growing, showing that hypoxia may have a profound impact on malignant progression and on responsiveness to therapy [1–4].The clinical relevance of tumor oxygenation in human solid malignancies is under investigation (for a recent review see [5]). In this presentation, relevant clinical findings available to date on blood and oxygen supply of human head and neck carcinomas will be reviewed and emphasis will be given to the relevance of these factors in clinical oncology.
NFAT transcription factors in control of peripheral T cell tolerance.
2006
The Ca++-regulated calcineurin/NFAT cascade is one of the crucial signalling pathways that controls adaptive immunity. However, a number of novel experimental data suggest that, in addition to their role in T cell activation, NFATc transcription factors play also a decisive role in the generation of peripheral tolerance against self-antigens. This function of NFATc factors is mediated by controlling activation-induced cell death and clonal anergy of T helper cells and the activity of regulatory T cells. The multi-functional role of NFATc proteins characterize these transcription factors as key regulators of immunological tolerance and, if dysregulated, of development of autoimmune diseases.
Understanding color vision, with comments on mind and matter
2012
Much is known about the mental and physical aspects of color vision. Color vision, therefore, is a paradigm well suited for the discussion of the relationship between mind and matter. The aim of the present chapter is to support the proposition that mental affairs cannot be adequately understood if their neurobiological aspects are neglected. Although it is possible to focus on fundamental problems of general relevance when discussing mind and matter, this chapter will deal with specific observations rather than general issues. The possibility of generalizations derived from empirical results is always limited. Provided the conditions under which these observations were made can be confirme…
The evolution of evolvability
2005
Ever since Ruth Garrett Millikan burst on the scene with her famous 1984 book Language, Thought, and Other Biological Categories [1] she has continued to make substantial contributions, in a remarkably sustained effort that significantly shaped the theoretical landscape in a number of fast-moving fields, from cognitive science to the philosophies of mind, language and biology [1–3]. One of her many achievements lies in the development of a new theoretical approach to cognitive semantics, which philosophers know under the heading of ‘teleofunctionalism’.
Classifiers in Sinitic languages: From individuation to definiteness-marking
2012
Abstract This article examines the distribution and interpretation of the bare classifier phrase [Cl+N] in three Sinitic languages of Mandarin, Wu and Cantonese. We show that [Cl+N] can be interpreted as definite or indefinite depending on pragmatic factors related to information structure and word order. Syntactically, we claim that indefinite [Cl+N] has the maximal projection of ClP and that definite [Cl+N] is a DP, where the D head is filled by the classifier via Cl-to-D raising. Semantically, we claim that indefinite [Cl+N] is predicative, denoting sets of atomic entities and that definite [Cl+N] is derived from indefinite [Cl+N] by lifting it from predicates to Generalized Quantifiers.…
Introduction to Homotopy Theory

Consider two manifolds X and Y together with a set of continuous maps f, g,... $$ f:X \to Y,x \to f(x) = y;x \in X,y \in Y. $$
Multiple effects of visual format on TV news learning
1991
Two experiments were conducted on edited TV newscast sequences to clarify effects of film accompaniment on learning from heard news text. In Experiment 1,150 British subjects viewed a sequence with either film format throughout or alternating film and ‘talking head’ format between items. Those items that were presented by ‘talking heads’ in the mixed sequence were learned better with film format, in which the heard text was accompanied by appropriate moving pictures. However, no effect of uniform context was found on the remaining items. In Experiment 2, 91 German subjects viewed one of four versions of a bulletin, one with ‘talking head’, one with film throughout, the other two having comp…
