Supravital Methylene Blue Staining of Piloneural Complexes of Common Fur Hair Follicles in the Rat

Light microscopic observations employing supravital methylene blue staining are presented for piloneural complexes of common fur hairs in the mystacial pad of the rat snout. The investigation revealed anatomical details of piloneural complexes belonging to follicles of both vellus and guard hairs. In the methylene blue stained preparations, different types of palisade-like lanceolate nerve fiber endings could be discriminated. The thicker vellus and thinner guard hairs (hair diameter: 15-25 microm) exhibited a different innervation pattern compared to the thicker guard hairs, and two subtypes of piloneural complexes could be distinguished. The most important long-term complication in total joint replacements is aseptic osteolysis. Wear particles such as polyethylene (PE) debris are considered to be one of the causes that play a central role. Several studies indicated that PE can be visualised in paraffin-embedded tissue sections not only by polarised light, but also after oil red staining. We selected 63 prostate tumors with Gleason's grade 6 (3+3), commonly showing both tubular and cribrous patterns. We compared in both patterns the expression of two of the most used biologic markers: PCNA and p53, with the aim to verify the validity of the Gleason's grading system to compare the morphologic grade with biologic aggressiveness and prognostic value. Oscillatory blood flow in the microcirculation is generally considered to be the result of cardiopulmonary influences or active vasomotion. In this report, we describe rhythmically oscillating blood flow in the bridging vessels of the mouse colon that appeared to be independent of known biological control mechanisms. Corrosion casting and scanning electron microscopy of the mouse colon demonstrated highly branched bridging vessels that connected the submucosal vessels with the mucosal plexus. Urine sediment cytology should be done for three main reasons: initial evaluation in symptomatic patients, pursuit of patients with tumoral pathology, and risk population screening. Desmoplastic trichilemmoma (DT) is a variant of trichilemmoma, characterized by a central prominent desmoplastic component which may simulate invasive carcinoma. We have studied the morphologic and immunohistochemical features of seven cases of DT. Immunohistochemistry was performed on paraffin sections using monoclonal antibodies to CD34 (QBEND/10), vimentin and GCDFP-15. CD34 was also tested in seven cases of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), three with outer root sheath differentiation and four with morphea-form features, and five squamous cell carcinomas. ‘Synaptic’ Bodies in the Pineal Glands of the Cow, Sheep and Pig

The present results show that ‘synaptic’ bodies (SB) are a heterogeneous group of organelles in the pineal glands of Artiodactyla. Basically, rod-like (ribbons) and sphere-like (spherules) SB can be distinguished. In the pig small numbers of both ‘synaptic’ ribbons (SR) and ‘synaptic’ spherules (SS) are found. In bovine and ovine pineal glands few SS but no SR were seen. The same results were obtained from animals of the same species but from different continents. This suggests that the numbers of SB are species specific rather than influenced by the different lighting conditions in Europe and in equatorial Africa.
Biphasic dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans with a labyrinthine plexiform high‐grade fibrosarcomatous transformation

Several variants of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, a low-grade superficial sarcoma, are well recognized. The most prognostically important is the fibrosarcomatous variant. We report a case of biphasic dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans in which the high-grade component exhibited a previously undescribed plexiform pattern. A clinicopathological study complemented with immunohistochemical, ultrastructural, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and fluorescence in situ hybridization analyses of this unique case. Time sequence and site of fluid accumulation in experimental neurogenic pulmonary edema.

The initial phase of pulmonary edema development following intracranial pressure elevation was studied by means of transmission electron microscopy. Using perfusion fixation and application of a blood tracer (HRP horseradish peroxidase) the time sequence and site of fluid leakage out of pulmonary vessels was demonstrated: - passage of edema fluid through intercellular clefts of alveolar capillary endothelium - edema accumulation in alveolar interstitial tissue - draining of edema fluid from the alveolar septum to the interstitium of terminal bronchioli and to lymphatic vessels. An early interepithelial fluid leakage out of the alveolar wall remains questionable.
Ischemia and post-ischemic regeneration of the small intestinal mucosa

After reversible ligation of the arcade vessels of the proximal jejunum, the intestinal mucosa was investigated by light microscopic and autoradiographic methods after 15, 30, 60, 120 and 300 min of ischemia. Early ischemic damage to the mucosa (after about 15 min) is characterized by shedding of not yet irreversibly damaged enterocytes from the tips of the villi into the intestinal lumen and bleb formation starting at the base of the epithelia. This process advances from the tips to the bases of the villi with increasing duration of ischemia, and the villi are completely denuded of epithelium after ischemia lasting 2 h.
