Teaching historical thinking in practice : a study of US history teachers’ views on using primary sources in AP and IB history lessons

Analysis of primary sources has been recognised to have a significant impact on the development of students’ historical thinking. This study explored US history teachers’ attitudes and practices to using primary sources by interviewing six history teachers and observing 29 history lessons between August and November 2016 in Indiana and California. The main focus of the study was on the views of International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme and Advancement Placement (AP) history teachers. Historic additional stories in the cultural heritage of Palermo: critical analysis for the purpose of structural and energy improvement

This paper analyses construction features and performances of additional storeys in historic buildings. The recurring characteristics of these historic accretions are investigated by focusing on the cultural heritage of Palermo, where the practice of extending buildings by raising new levels was widespread both in monumental and vernacular architecture, in public and private constructions. The performance deficiencies of additional storeys are examined in terms of structural safety, thermal comfort and building energy demand. On this basis, the utility of mapping these structures, their morphology and their location in the urban fabric is discussed.

Groves with ancient olive trees (Olea europaea L.) could be considered remnants of old agroforestry systems. Anything but static, these agro-ecosystems have undergone drastic transformational processes in Mediterranean countries, where abandonment or intensification have been observed far more than continuity, expansion or renaissance, leading to environmental degradation of rural areas. The aim of the article is to present the image of local government in the his-tory of Poland in the 20th century, in terms of the latest school history textbooks. For the purpose of the analysis, eight studies have been selected, which since September 2012 have been taught in Polish secondary schools.
