A Crisis Management Serious Game for Responding Extreme Weather Event

2017

Managing crisis with limited resources through a serious game is deemed as one of the ways of training and can be regarded as an alternative to the table-top exercise. This paper presents the so-called “Operasjon Tyrsdal” serious game, inspired by a real case of extreme weather that hit the west coast of Norway. This reference case is used to add realism to the game. The game is designed for a single player, while the mechanics are framed in such way that the player should deal with limited resources, and elevated event pressure over time to manage. Beside applying an iterative Scrum method with seven Sprint cycles, we combined the development work with desk research and involvement of test…

The Role of Parental Communication and Emotional Intelligence in Child-to-Parent Violence

2019

In recent years, cases of child-to-parent violence (CPV) have increased significantly, prompting greater scientific interest in clarifying its causes. The aim of this research was to study the relationship between styles of family communication (open, offensive and avoidant), emotional intelligence or EI (attention, repair and perceived emotional clarity) and CPV, taking into account the gender of the aggressors. The participants of the study were 1200 adolescents (46.86% boys) between the ages of 12 and 18 enrolled at secondary schools in the Autonomous Communities of Andalusia and Valencia (M = 13.88, SD = 1.32). 2014

Accessibility of the Italian public administration web pages is ruled by the Stanca Act and in particular the Decree of the Minister issued on July 8, 2005. In this paper, an objective test is performed on the official web pages of the Italian province and region chief towns to check their compliance to the 22 technical requirements defined by the Stanca Act. A sample of 976 web pages belonging to the websites of the Italian chief towns have been downloaded in the period October---December 2012. Such a data collection has been submitted to Achecker, the worldwide recognized syntax and accessibility validation service. Several accessibility and syntax errors have been found following the aut…

User-oriented evaluation of mechanical single-channel axial pipettes.

2013

Hand tools should be designed so that they are comfortable to use, fit the hand and are user-oriented. Six different manual, single-channel axial pipettes were evaluated for such objective outcomes as muscular activity, wrist postures and efficiency, as well as for subjective outcomes concerning self-assessed features of pipette usability and musculoskeletal strain. Ten experienced laboratory employees volunteered for the study. The results showed that light and short pipettes with better tool comfort resulted in reduced muscular activity and perceived musculoskeletal strain when they were compared with a long and heavy pipette. There were no differences in the efficiency between the differ…

Evaluation of interaction metaphors for collaborative work distant immersive sites

2009

The design of the virtual environment (VE) has to take into account several factors including the input and output devices, the design of the interaction metaphor or the application domain. In addition to these considerations, the design of a collaborative virtual environment (CVE) needs to take into account the collaborative aspect of the interaction metaphor. In one hand, the interaction metaphor has to be designed for the best possible task performance. In the other hand, the influence of the interaction metaphor on the user's experience (in terms of psychological and social aspects) constitutes an important research question. To address this research question, two experimental studies h…

2019

Although certain education policies emphasize “the ability to collaborate” as a key element of educational reform, education for digital collaboration is poorly supported by public schools. To build the conditions of a sustainable education, we have developed a training model focused on learner autonomy. We present the results of an experiment conducted with students, our pedagogical model and its implementation, as well as our observation and analysis of this experiment. We analyzed discussions in instant messaging between students and teachers, and their productions. All results show the influence of our training. Thus, education and digital collaboration can be built from a triple analyt…
