To Help or Not to Help? Prosocial Behavior, Its Association With Well-Being, and Predictors of Prosocial Behavior During the Coronavirus Disease Pand…

2022

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic fundamentally disrupted humans’ social life and behavior. Public health measures may have inadvertently impacted how people care for each other. This study investigated prosocial behavior, its association well-being, and predictors of prosocial behavior during the first COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and sought to understand whether region-specific differences exist. Participants (N = 9,496) from eight regions clustering multiple countries around the world responded to a cross-sectional online-survey investigating the psychological consequences of the first upsurge of lockdowns in spring 2020. Prosocial behavior was reported to occur frequently. Multi…

Does predictability matter? Effects of cue predictability on neurocognitive mechanisms underlying prospective memory

2015

Prospective memory (PM) represents the ability to successfully realize intentions when the appropriate moment or cue occurs. In this study, we used event-related potentials (ERPs) to explore the impact of cue predictability on the cognitive and neural mechanisms supporting PM. Participants performed an ongoing task and, simultaneously, had to remember to execute a pre-specified action when they encountered the PM cues. The occurrence of the PM cues was predictable (being signalled by a warning cue) for some participants and was completely unpredictable for others. In the predictable cue condition, the behavioural and ERP correlates of strategic monitoring were observed mainly in the ongoing…

L’argot de la prostitution et sa présence dans les dictionnaires d’aujourd’hui

2021

The aim of this text is to study the slang of prostitution and its presence in today’s dictionaries. We decided to focus only on the lexical field “prostitute” and the slang expressions used to describe her. We have classified all the words into the following subcategories: prostitute compared to a food, prostitute compared to an animal, prostitute compared to an object that is used frequently, prostitute compared to a child, prostitute compared to a waitress, prostitute characterized by her place of work, prostitute characterized by her qualities and defects. To observe the presence of analysed words in dictionaries, we used two general dictionaries (Larousse, CNRTL), a specialized diction…

If you can’t be here, be here. Modalit e strategie della protesta online del movimento Black Lives Matter

2021

Eight minutes and forty-six seconds. This is the time in which the murder of George Floyd, in Minnesota, took place on 25 May 2020. A further act of institutionalized violence – granted, legitimized and overlooked by institutions – that made necessary for the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement to start a series of protests to draw attention to the abuse of power of a racist and corrupt system that highlights the breakdown of the social pact between people in a society. Beyond the ethical and political significance of the event, our contribution aims to reflect on the forms of occupation of the physical and virtual spaces through which BLM constitutes itself as a movement and organizes confli…

Communist monuments: Cultural heritage or cultural nuisance?

2020

1998

Though computerized sytems now offer a wide range of options for accessing and displaying text or text-picture information, little is known about their effects on the user's cognitive processes. In this paper, we investigate the effect of a computer-specific display (pop-up window) which consists in displaying some pieces of information in windows that appear only under user's action. Experiments were carried out to compare the pop-up window device with other devices used on paper. The experiments dealt with text only as well as text-picture documents and involved various tasks. Results are discussed from a theoretical and a practical point of view.

Osoby będące pod wpływem działania substancji psychoaktywnych a bezradność

2022

The chapter discusses the main concepts related to addiction and its diagnosis. The definition of addiction and diagnostic criteria for substance and behavior addiction will be discussed. Formal criteria enabling professional treatment and social understanding of the phenomenon are important for systematising knowledge and clearly presenting the profiles of addicts. The text describes separately the problem of addictions to behavior, listing those most common in the literature. In addition, a discussion is initiated on behaviors that formally do not meet the definition of addiction, although they are associated with some compulsion. In addition, the issues of the experience of the disease a…

Too much? Excessive sexual experiences in bisexual women’s life stories

2017

This article explores bisexual women’s sexual experiences at the edges of or between relationships. It draws on the follow-up interviews of a longitudinal interview set conducted in 2005 and 2014–2015 with bisexual women and their partners, who do not identify as bisexuals. Bisexual women’s spontaneous, detailed and affective narrations of sexual experiences in the follow-up interviews caught the author’s attention. Although the experiences were often narrated as pleasurable, they could be overwhelming, and women also expressed concern that they were excessive, “too much”. The analysis of the women’s accounts utilizes and develops a psychosocial concept of excess. It reveals that the excess…

Facing the music : a critical enquiry into 'the dodo-bird verdict' to develop music psychotherapy theory

2015

‘The dodo-bird verdict’ represents a boggling outcome of research that shows no significant difference between the outcomes of a variety of psychotherapy treatments. Not being able to scientifically discriminate between psychotherapeutic treatments, casts doubt on their theoretical underpinnings, and even on their efficacy. This in turn presents professionals who use psychotherapeutic techniques - including music therapists - with a conundrum: What can explain this inability? And what can be done to solve the problem? Conceptual research methods were used to analyse literature in order to answer these questions. Various weaknesses were identified, both in theory construction and in research…
