Celiac disease and selective immunoglobulin A deficiency

1997

Selective IgA deficiency was observed in 12 of 688 (1.7%) patients with celiac disease who were clinically undistinguishable from patients with celiac disease with normal IgA levels. This high prevalence of IgA deficiency in patients with celiac disease makes serum IgA assay advisable when screening for celiac disease is performed by measurement of antigliadin antibodies or anti-IgA endomysium antibodies. Similarly, subjects with IgA deficiency should be considered at risk of celiac disease.

El trabajo incide en la complejidad del fenómeno, huyendo de explicaciones lineales y sencillas, extrayendo como variables fundamentales a investigar: la realidad educativa, el barrio de residencia en el municipio, la existencia previa de in…

Strategic responses to intimate partner violence against women in Spain: a national study in primary care

2012

Background Research on women99s responses to intimate partner violence (IPV) has largely been limited to women who have been exposed to severe physical violence with scarce generalisation. This study aimed to analyse how Spanish abused women from different backgrounds and with different IPV characteristics respond to violence. Method Women experiencing IPV before the previous year (1469) were selected from a large cross-sectional national survey of adult women recruited during 2006–7 among female patients seeking medical care for whatever reason in primary healthcare services. The outcome variables were women9s responses to IPV and the predictor variables were personal and social resources …

Pregnancy Outcome in Maternal Crigler-Najjar Syndrome Type II: A Case Report and Systematic Review of the Literature

2008

Objective: To report a case of maternal Crigler-Najjar syndrome (CNS) type II in pregnancy, systematically review the literature for similar case reports, and to evaluate whether pregnancy is safe in patients with the disease. Data sources included the PubMed and uptodate databases. Results: A 37-year-old mother with CNS type II was treated with phenobarbital during her pregnancy and her bilirubin levels were monitored. Her newborn had mild direct hyperbilirubinemia, did not require any treatment and his postnatal follow-up showed normal growth and development as well as normal hearing. Conclusion: CNS type II is rare, and only a few …

Primordial Prevention of High Blood Pressure in Childhood

2020

Hypertension is a condition with increased risk for subsequent adverse events, and treatment of hypertension is prescribed for primary prevention of adverse events. Primordial prevention is a concept that precedes primary prevention and focuses on risk factor prevention. Primordial prevention of hypertension consists of strategies to maintain blood pressure in a normal range and prevent development of elevated blood pressure or hypertension. Childhood is a period in which primordial prevention could be effective and if sustained throughout childhood could contribute to a healthier young adulthood. Targets for primordial prevention in childhood include preventing and reducing childhood obesi…

Mortality in patients with coeliac disease and their relatives: a cohort study.

2001

Summary Background Although previous studies have shown increased mortality in patients with coeliac disease and their relatives, no data are available in relation to different patterns of clinical presentation. We assessed mortality in patients with coeliac disease and their first-degree relatives. Methods We enrolled, in a prospective cohort study, 1072 adult patients with coeliac disease consecutively diagnosed in 11 gastroenterology units between 1962 and 1994, and their 3384 first-degree relatives. We compared the number of deaths up to 1998 with expected deaths and expressed the comparison as standardised mortality ratio (SMR) and relative survival ratio. Findings 53 coeliac patients …
