Veränderung von Inzidenz und Mortalität von Kopf-Hals-Malignomen in Rheinland-Pfalz, 2000–2009

2014

Influence of maternal diet on the development of malformation of the external genitalia – Are we ready to make some recommendations?

2014

The influence of our environment on the development of malformation is well known and, again and again, discussed with great enthusiasm. For example, the supplementation of the diet with folic acid has been proven to prevent neural tube defects already in 1991 [1, 6]. However, despite this well–known fact, only 10.6% of women take folic acid at least four weeks before getting pregnant; although 60% know the increased risk. It was interesting to see, that there were no big differences between the social groups [7]. Some epidemiological studies suggest an increasing risk of disorders / malformation of the external genitalia in males. The influence of the hormonal environment, especially of an…

Embryo Aneuploidy Screening for Unexplained Recurrent Miscarriage: A Minireview

2005

Problem:  The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of chromosomal abnormalities in unexplained recurrent miscarriage (RM) patients and assess the role of pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) in preventing subsequent pregnancy loss and improving pregnancy outcome. Method of Study:  Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis was performed in 241 RM cycles and in 35 cycles in patients undergoing PGD for sex-linked diseases (control group). Chromosomes 13, 16, 18, 21, 22, X and Y were analysed by fluorescence in situ hybridization. Results:  The implantation and pregnancy rates in RM patients were 26.4 and 36.5% versus 20.6 and 29.0% in the control group, respectively. The percentage …

Epidemiologie und tiologie der instabilen Blase

2003

2017

International audience; Few data are available about the epidemiology of digestive neuroendocrine tumours (NETs). Malignant digestive (MD) NETs remain as a rare cancer representing 1 % of digestive cancers. In France, the incidence rates of MD-NETs are estimated to around 1.1/100,000 inhabitants in males and 0.9/100,000 in females which then increased over time, with probably more than 1,000 new cases per year. Due to the relative good prognosis, NETs are the second more prevalent digestive cancer next to colorectal cancer. Most gastroenteropancreatic NETs are well-differentiated (WD-NETs); poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas (PDNEC) account for less than 20% of the cases in mos…

Screening for renal cell carcinoma using ultrasonography: a feasibility study

2003

OBJECTIVE To assess the practicability and efficacy of systematic screening for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) by ultrasonography (US), as more small RCCs are being detected incidentally by US. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A 2-year screening programme for RCC was established for the general population (aged ≥ 40 years) in two German cities, Mainz and Wuppertal. In cooperation with different health insurers, the organisers recruited general practitioners, internists and urologists in private practice who were experienced in and equipped to conduct renal US. The screening was offered in the form of cost-free renal US in the first year and a re-examination in the second. For any equivocal or positive rena…

Risk assessment of component failure modes and human errors using a new FMECA approach: application in the safety analysis of HDR brachytherapy

2014

Failure mode, effects and criticality analysis (FMECA) is a safety technique extensively used in many different industrial fields to identify and prevent potential failures. In the application of traditional FMECA, the risk priority number (RPN) is determined to rank the failure modes; however, the method has been criticised for having several weaknesses. Moreover, it is unable to adequately deal with human errors or negligence. In this paper, a new versatile fuzzy rule-based assessment model is proposed to evaluate the RPN index to rank both component failure and human error. The proposed methodology is applied to potential radiological over-exposure of patients during high-dose-rate brach…
