Effect of electron beam irradiation and plastic deformation on molar mass of medical grade ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene

2010

UV-induced cross-linking of proteins to plasmid pBR322 containing 8-azidoadenine 2′-deoxyribonucleotides

1988

Abstract An efficient method of cross-linking DNA to protein is described. The method is based on the incorporation of photoactive 8-azidoadenine 2′-deoxyribonucleotides into DNA. We have found that 8-N 3 dATP is a substrate for E. coli DNA polymerase I and that 8-N 3 dATP can be incorporated into plasmid pBR322 by nick-translation. Subsequently we were able to cross-link a set of different proteins to 8-azido-2′-deoxyadenosine-containing pBR322 by UV irradiation (366 nm). No DNA-protein photocross-linking was observed under the same conditions when the non-photoactive plasmid pBR322 was used.

Photomagnetic effect in a cyanide-bridged mixed-valence {FeII2FeIII2} molecular square

2012

The self-assembly of [Fe(III)(Tp)(CN)(3)](-) and [Fe(II)(bik)(2)(S)(2)](2+) affords the cyanide-bridged mixed valence {Fe(III)(2)Fe(II)(2)}(2+) molecular square, which exhibits a photomagnetic effect under laser light irradiation at low temperature and also shows thermal spin-state conversion near ambient temperature.

The optimisation of the angle of inclination of a solar collector to maximise the incident solar radiation

1999

Abstract Irradiation data, recorded on vertical surfaces facing north, south, east and west and on a horizontal surface every ten minutes during daylight hours from January–December 1992 in Valencia, Spain, have been compared with estimated solar irradiation from inclined-surface models. Results show that Hays model most accurately reproduces the variation in irradiation on all vertical surfaces. Hays model has been used to find the hourly variation in the optimum tilt angle for a South-facing solar collector in Valencia, Spain, and also to calculate the yearly average of this angle. This method has been compared with the results provided by another model that uses average monthly values of…

E-beam crosslinked, biocompatible functional hydrogels incorporating polyaniline nanoparticles

2012

Abstract PANI aqueous nanocolloids in their acid-doped, inherently conductive form were synthesised by means of suitable water soluble polymers used as stabilisers. In particular, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) or chitosan (CT) was used to stabilise PANI nanoparticles, thus preventing PANI precipitation during synthesis and upon storage. Subsequently, e-beam irradiation of the PANI dispersions has been performed with a 12 MeV Linac accelerator. PVA-PANI nanocolloid has been transformed into a PVA-PANI hydrogel nanocomposite by radiation induced crosslinking of PVA. CT-PANI nanoparticles dispersion, in turn, was added to PVA to obtain wall-to-wall gels, as chitosan mainly undergoes chain scission…

Microgels of polyaspartamide and poly(ethylene glycol) derivatives obtained by γ-irradiation

2002

Abstract The copolymer PHG based on α , β -poly( N -2-hydroxyethyl)- dl -aspartamide (PHEA) functionalized with glycidyl methacrylate has been exposed in aqueous solution to a γ -ray source at different irradiation doses (2, 2.5 and 3.5 kGy), alone or in combination with poly(ethylene glycol)dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) or poly(ethylene glycol)diacrylate (PEGDA). The irradiation produces microgel systems that have been characterized by viscosity measurements. Lyophilization of microgels gives rise to samples able to swell instantaneously in water whereas their treatment with acetone produces swellable microparticles that have been characterized.

<title>Luminescence of intrinsic defects in LiBaF<formula><inf><roman>3</roman></inf></formula></title&g…

2003

A wide emission band in the region of 425 nm is observed in all the examined crystals at photo and ionising irradiation. Maximum of the complex luminescence band is observed at 410 nm at 350 K and at 450 nm at 85 K. The shift of the peak of the band envelope towards shorter wavelengths as the temperature increases is related to thermal dependence of the intensity of elementary components of the luminescence band. The authors suggest that the complex luminescence band arises from electronic excitations at "antisite" defects, i.e., defects caused by stoichiometric deviations, when a portion of Li+ cations (cations of one type of the LiBaF3 crystal lattice) occupy sites of Ba2+ cations (cation…

PbS Nanodots Embedded in ZrO2 Thin Films for Ultraviolet Radiation Dosimetry

2011

PbS nanodots embedded in ZrO2 thin film matrix (ZrO2:PbS films) were investigated for UV radiation dosimetry purposes. ZrO2:PbS films were UV irradiated using wavelengths 250 - 400 nm. Photoelectron emission spectra of ZrO2:PbS films were recorded and band structure of the films was calculated. It was found that density of localized states increased with increase in concentration of PbS nanodots which allowed to suggest that PbS nanodots are responsible for creation of localized states. Number of localized states decreased after UV irradiation. The linear correlation between number of localized states and time of UV exposure was observed. Observed changes in band structure of ZrO2:PbS films…

Total ionizing dose (TID) evaluation of magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) current sensors

2015

Abstract The paper shows an experimental study to know the behaviour of tunnel magnetoresistive effect-based current sensors configured in a Wheatstone bridge in response to irradiation. In particular the sensitivity, hysteresis, output offset voltage and input resistance are discussed when the sensors are submitted to a total irradiation dose of 43 krad with 36 krad/h dose rate. The same electrical parameters were studied subsequently once the irradiated sensors were submitted to an 80 °C annealing process. The studied TMR sensors are applied in a switched-mode power converter for space application.

Study of optical absorbance and MR relaxation of Fricke xylenol orange gel dosimeters

2017

Abstract Studies on the optical absorbance spectra of Fricke xylenol orange gel dosimeters were performed, in the wavelength range from 300 nm to 800 nm, in order to highlight some particular characteristics that can affect the achievable precision. The spectra are different mainly due to the different types of xylenol orange that was used and to a lower extent due to the different gelling agents (agarose or gelatine). The characteristic of variation of absorbance spectra versus dose, however, are similar in the various cases and can explain some peculiarities, as apparent effects of dose threshold. Changes of spectral shapes appear over the time after irradiation. Magnetic resonance measur…
