Immunohistochemical evaluation of bone marrow lymphoid nodules in chronic myeloproliferative disorders

One hundred and seventy bone marrow biopsies from patients with chronic myeloproliferative disorders (CMPDs) were evaluated for the presence of lymphoid nodules (LNs) and were immunostained using a panel of monoclonal antibodies (UCHL1, 4KB5 and L26) recognizing different lymphocyte antigens. LNs were found in 35% of cases of idiopathic thrombocythaemia, 24.6% of myelofibrosis/osteomyelosclerosis, 18.2% of polycythaemia vera 12.1% of chronic myeloid leukaemia and 19.2% of borderline cases. Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) is a rare human genetic disease that leads to premature aging. HGPS is caused by mutation in the Lamin-A (LMNA) gene that leads, in affected young individuals, to the accumulation of the progerin protein, usually present only in aging differentiated cells. Bioinformatics analyses of the network of interactions of the LMNA gene and transcripts are presented. Background Melanoma incidence/mortality is increasing worldwide. “Euromelanoma Day” is a pan-European campaign for skin cancer prevention. Results of the 2010 Euromelanoma Day in Italy are reported herein. Materials and methods A questionnaire was used to collect data on participants' characteristics and suspected skin cancers. Result A total of 1085 participants was screened (64.1% females, median age 44 years). Suspicion rate, detection rate, and positive predictive values for melanoma were 1.3, 0.28 and 21.4%, respectively. Background: Reconstruction of large defects in the temporal region can be performed with skin grafts or pedicled or free flaps. Results are often not optimal because of the patch of a skin graft, lack of availability of local flaps, and distant skin from free flaps. A technique for reconstruction of these defects with local tissue is presented in this article that uses superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) plication to allow wide advancement of a cervicofacial flap. Penile epidermal cysts are uncommon. We report a pediatric case of epidermal inclusion cyst of the penis after urethroplasty, responsible of the appearance of an urethro-cutaneous fistula. In our opinion, surgical excision of epidermal inclusion cyst after urethroplasty must be performed as quickly as possible to avoid occurrence of postoperative complications.

Wistar rat skin as surrogate for human skin in nortriptyline hydrochloride patch studies

Six different matrices were prepared containing nortriptyline hydrochloride (NTH) with hydroxypropyl-methyl-cellulose as polymer. A mixture of transdermal enhancers was included as part of the vehicle. Diffusion studies were carried out through Wistar rat full thickness skin using Franz cells. They were compared with previously determined human heat separated epidermis in order to test if this animal can be used as model for in vivo assays. A linear correlation was obtained between NTH diffusion coefficients through both skin types (r2=0.996).

Rationale Despite the widespread use of the Global Lung Function Initiative (GLI) 2012 reference values, there is still the need of testing their applicability in local areas. Objectives The aims of this study are to evaluate applicability of GLI reference equations in a large population-based sample of normal schoolchildren from Sicily, and to compare GLI and previous prediction equations in terms of spirometry test interpretation.
