An impaired alveolar-capillary barrier in vitro : effect of proinflammatory cytokines and consequences on nanocarrier interaction.
2009
The alveolar region of the lung is an important target for drug and gene delivery approaches. Treatment with drugs is often necessary under pathophysiological conditions, in which there is acute inflammation of the target organ. Therefore, in vitro models of the alveolar-capillary barrier, which mimic inflammatory conditions in the alveolar region, would be useful to analyse and predict effects of novel drugs on healthy or inflamed tissues. The epithelial cell line H441 was cultivated with primary isolated human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (HPMECs) or the endothelial cell line ISO-HAS-1 on opposite sides of a permeable filter support under physiological and inflammatory condi…

The epithelium is the main entry point for many viruses, but the processes that protect barrier surfaces against viral infections are incompletely understood. Here we identified interleukin 22 (IL-22) produced by innate lymphoid cell group 3 (ILC3) as an amplifier of signaling via interferon- λ (IFN- λ ) , a synergism needed to curtail the replication of rotavirus, the leading cause of childhood gastroenteritis. Cooperation between the receptor for IL-22 and the receptor for IFN- λ , both of which were ‘preferentially’ expressed by intestinal epithelial cells (IECs), was required for optimal activation of the transcription factor STAT1 and expression of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs). T…
Effect of poly(I).poly(C12U) (Ampligen) on enteric virus (rotavirus, poliovirus and Coxsackie B3 virus) infections
1994
The effects of poly(1)-poly(C 12 U) (Ampligen) on infections with enteric viruses (rotavirus, poliovirus and Coxsackie B3 virus) were studied in vitro. Ampligen exhibited antiviral activity against rotavirus, especially when treatment was performed prior to inoculation of the virus. It was partially effective against Coxsackie B3 virus, but not against poliovirus. It is suggested that the observed effects may be due to the production of interferon induced by Ampligen
Acetylcysteine therapy for chronic hepatitis C: are its effects synergistic with interferon alpha? A pilot study.
2008
This trial reports the 6-month results of a pilot study using lymphoblastoid interferon alpha (IFNalpha) and acetylcysteine (N-acetylcysteine) separately and in combination in patients with chronic hepatitis C, genotype 1b, who were nonresponders to previous treatment with recombinant IFNalpha alone.21 patients were randomly divided into three groups of seven each. Group A was treated with lymphoblastoid IFNalpha 6MU three times a week for 6 months; group B received the same schedule of lymphoblastoid IFNalpha as group A plus acetylcysteine 1200 mg/day per os in two administrations, and group C received only acetylcysteine 1200 mg/day per os in two administrations.Mean serum alanine aminotr…

Rapporto costo-efficacia della terapia peginterferone α-2a + ribavirina in confronto a interferone α-2b + ribavirina in pazienti affetti da epatite c…
2004
Introduction In adults with previously untreated chronic hepatitis C (CHC), the combination of peginterferon α-2a plus ribavirin produces a higher rate of sustained virological response (SVR) than interferon α-2b plus ribavirin, but it is still unproven whether this increase is cost-effective. The objective of this study was to determine if the gain in SVR with peginterferon α-2a plus ribavirin is worth the incremental cost.

Alfavīrusu vektoru izstrāde makrofāgu aktvācijai vēža imunoterapijā
2016
Audzēju-iefiltrējošiem makrofāgiem piemīt gan spēja veicināt audzēja attīstību, gan inhibēt, attiecībā no to aktivācijas stāvokļa.
Mechanism of the Antiretroviral Effect of dsRNA
1994
The development of AIDS seems to be linked to an impairment of processes which are induced or activated by double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), such as the biosynthesis of interferon (IFN), production of 2′,5′-oligoadenylate (2-5A), ribonuclease L (RNase L) activity and different cell-mediated immune functions. A restriction of available bioactive dsRNA (or of dsRNA-dependent enzymes) may play an important role in the disease progression. The results summarized in this review show that defects in dsRNA-dependent pathways exhibited by AIDS patients can be reversed, at least in part, by exogenously supplied dsRNA.
