Employment effects of skills around the world: Evidence from the PIAAC

Using an international survey that directly assesses the cognitive skills of participants, the author studies the effect of skills on employment in 32 countries. On average, a 1 standard deviation increase in numeracy is associated with an 8.4 percentage point increase in the probability of being employed, reducing the probability of being out of the labour force and unemployed by 6.4 and 2.1 percentage points, respectively. After controlling for numeracy, the estimated employment effect of years in education falls by one third, from 2.7 to 1.8 percentage points. Notably, the employment effect of skills is more pronounced in countries with higher unemployment.

The relative relationship between education and workplace task discretion: an international comparative perspective

International audience; Through analyses of Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) data, the following study considers the direct and indirect association between education and workplace task discretion in 30 countries. By focusing on cross-national comparison, it considers the ways in which these findings are dependent on both the overall level and the range of task discretion across occupational sectors within a country. Objective To assess short term mortality risks and excess mortality associated with exposure to ozone in several cities worldwide. Design Two stage time series analysis. Setting 406 cities in 20 countries, with overlapping periods between 1985 and 2015, collected from the database of Multi-City Multi-Country Collaborative Research Network. The International Congress of Immunobiology of Normal and Diabetic Pregnancy brought together a heterogeneous group of workers to consider one of the most fascinating areas of immunology. The meeting, which proved to be a thinkshop as much as a workshop, developed along two major lines: (1) an examination of new data in normal pregnancy immunology, from both the research and clinical points of view and (2) analysis of the suspected problems of diabetic pregnancy. 'Suspected' because pregnancy-related problems in diabetic women are not due solely to metabolic disturbances, but also involve immunological aspects of diabetes, particularly where type I diabetes is concerned.
