And Now for Something Completely Different: Running Lisp on GPUs

2018

The internal parallelism of compute resources increases permanently, and graphics processing units (GPUs) and other accelerators have been gaining importance in many domains. Researchers from life science, bioinformatics or artificial intelligence, for example, use GPUs to accelerate their computations. However, languages typically used in some of these disciplines often do not benefit from the technical developments because they cannot be executed natively on GPUs. Instead existing programs must be rewritten in other, less dynamic programming languages. On the other hand, the gap in programming features between accelerators and common CPUs shrinks permanently. Since accelerators are becomi…

Fast narrowing-driven partial evaluation for inductively sequential programs

2005

Narrowing-driven partial evaluation is a powerful technique for the specialization of (first-order) functional and functional logic programs. However, although it gives good results on small programs, it does not scale up well to realistic problems (e.g., interpreter specialization). In this work, we introduce a faster partial evaluation scheme by ensuring the termination of the process offline . For this purpose, we first characterize a class of programs which are quasi-terminating , i.e., the computations performed with needed narrowing—the symbolic computation mechanism of narrowing-driven partial evaluation—only contain finitely many different terms (and, thus, partial evaluation termi…

DC4CD

2017

In this article, we present Distributed Computing for Constrained Devices (DC4CD), a novel software architecture that supports symbolic distributed computing on wireless sensor networks. DC4CD integrates the functionalities of a high-level symbolic interpreter, a compiler, and an operating system, and includes networking abstractions to exchange high-level symbolic code among peer devices. Contrarily to other architectures proposed in the literature, DC4CD allows for changes at runtime, even on deployed nodes of both application and system code. Experimental results show that DC4CD is more efficient in terms of memory usage than existing architectures, with which it also compares well in te…

An Intellectual Trajectory in the Age of Antiformalism. Gény and the Rise of the Law of Society.

2016

The letters that Gény wrote to Saleilles between 1892 and 1912 are a precious treasure, an inexhaustible mine of ideas, suggestions, confirmations. They betray the sensivity, the fragilities, the torments of the man, before the substance and the technical style of the lawyer. Gény and Saleilles are first of all human beings, overwhelmed by facts and things, inclined to the emotions; they are lawyers immersed in the reality of their age, with their views planted in the material of the economic and social facts. Thanks to his perspective, based on the rediscovered centrality of society and economy, Gény outlined a social and dynamic conception of law; suggested a system of the sources of law …

Training Language Mediators and Interpreters through Embodied Cognition, Immersive Learning and Virtual Reality: Didactic, Organizational and Cost Be…

2022

The use of Virtual Reality (VR) for training purposes has expanded exponentially in the last decade. This paper specifically examines the use of VR in the training of language mediators and interpreters. By way of exemplification, the paper describes a training project at the University of Palermo, the “Coopera” project. The physically-cognitively immersive ‘learning by doing’ factor that characterizes a VR educational experience is particularly well-suited to skill- based activities. The paper explains how the immersive nature of VR and the notion of ‘embodied cognition’ is particularly suited to mediator/interpreter training by plausibly reproducing daily life situations and providing a ‘…

Theognis of Megara and the Divine Creating Power in the Framework of Semiotic Textology: An Application of János Sándor Petöfi’s Theory to Archaic Gr…

2012

This paper is a demonstration of an application of Semiotic Textology to a limited case study. The main aspects of Semiotic Textology, the theory elaborated by Petöfi, are presented; secondly the linguistic aspects of the interpretation of lines 133-134 of the Theognis of Megara's poem, analysed in the framework of said theory, are presented. All the relevant syntactic, semantic, pragmatic information involved in text processing have been considered. Through fixed steps, it is shown that text processing is not exclusively a grammatical activity, because within a theoretical interpretation an Interpreter needs a number of contextual hypotheses, in order to understand the author's ontology. ©…

Retrospection in interpreting and translation: explaining the process?

2014

Retrospection is one of the few research methods equally suitable for studying the processes involved in both translation and interpreting. At the first workshop on research methods in process-oriented research (Graz 2009), we presented the results of a pilot study of retrospection as a research method, published as Englund Dimitrova & Tiselius (2009). The study involved data from two groups (15 years of professional experience vs. no professional experience), each with 3+3 subjects (interpreter subjects vs. translator subjects, all with Swedish as their L1). The source text was a 10-minute plenary speech in English from the European Parliament, interpreted simultaneously into Swedish. …

2017
