Association of Thyroid Function Test Abnormalities and Thyroid Autoimmunity With Preterm Birth A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

2019

Preterm birth complicates 5% to 15% of births worldwide, and although it is the most important direct cause of morbidity and mortality in children younger than 5 years, no known risk factors can be identified in the majority of cases. However, overt hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism during pregnancy are well-known risk factors for preterm birth, and as such, the purpose of this study was to assess whether thyroid function test abnormalities and thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibody positivity were associated with preterm birth. The study conducted a systematic review on the association of thyroid function or autoimmunity with preterm birth published from database inception to March 18, 2018, w…

In human endothelial cells rapamycin causes mTORC2 inhibition and impairs cell viability and function.

2008

Aim Drug-eluting stents are widely used to prevent restenosis but are associated with late endothelial damage. To understand the basis for this effect, we have studied the consequences of a prolonged incubation with rapamycin on the viability and functions of endothelial cells. Methods and results Human umbilical vein or aorta endothelial cells were exposed to rapamycin in the absence or in the presence of tumour necrosis factor α (TNFα). After a 24 h-incubation, rapamycin (100 nM) caused a significant cell loss associated with the increase of both apoptosis and necrosis, as quantified by propidium iodide staining, caspase 3 activity, and lactate dehydrogenase release. Rapamycin also impair…

Two mechanisms are feasible in the anionic polymerization of virtually anhydrous formaldehyde initiated by uncharged LEWIS-bases such as tertiary amines and phosphines: 1. Direct initiation with formation of macrozwitterions the conventional mechanism in which an impurity such as water or methylene glycol acts as a cocatalyst. The investigations were carried out mainly by end group analysis. With triethyl amine as initiator the cocatalysis mechanism is the only or, at least, the predominant mechanism (at 20°C in dimethyl formamide). Quaternary ammonium ions – if any – are present in concentrations much below the concentrations of anionic chain ends. The latter were determined by termination…

Detection of anti-myeloperoxidase antibodies in the serum of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

1996

Anti-myeloperoxidase (anti-MPO) antibodies were detected in 34 of 88 (38%) patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus but in only 3 of 55 (5.7%) healthy subjects and in 4 of 20 patients with autoimmune disease. Specificity of anti-MPO antibodies was assessed by MPO inhibition studies. No relationship was found between the occurrence of anti-MPO and anti-thyroperoxidase antibodies. Levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) were found to be higher in anti-MPO antibody-positive (n = 28, 508 +/- 126 ng/ml) than in anti-MPO antibody-negative (n = 58, 438 +/- 140 ng/ml: P < 0.05) patients. A state of chronic neutrophil activation has been described in diabetes mellitus. As anti-MPO…

Crystalline-Size Dependence of Dual Emission Peak on Hybrid Organic Lead-Iodide Perovskite Films at Low Temperatures

2018

In this work, we have investigated the crystalline-size dependence of optical absorption and photoluminescence emission of CH3NH3PbI3 films, which is necessary to identify the potential practical applications of the gadgets based on perovskite films. This study was carried out at low temperatures to minimize the extra complexity induced by thermal effects. The purpose was to clarify the origin of the dual emission peak previously reported in the literature. We found that the grain size is responsible for the appearance or disappearance of this dual emission on CH3NH3PbI3 at low temperatures, whereas we have inferred that the thickness of the perovskite layer is a much more important factor …

Acid−Base Properties of Synthetic and Natural Polyelectrolytes: Experimental Results and Models for the Dependence on Different Aqueous Media

2008

Protonation constants of several natural and synthetic humates and fulvates were determined by ISE-H+ potentiometry in different ionic media (alkali metal halides and tetraethylammonium iodide) at different ionic strengths and T ) 298.15 K. Experimental data obtained in previous studies of different synthetic (polyacrylates, polymethacrylates, polyacrylate-co-maleate) and naturally occurring (alginate, humic substances) polycarboxylates were also taken into account in the general analysis of acid-base properties of polyelectrolytes. Protonation constants were expressed as a function of the dissociation degree (R) using three models, namely, a simple linear model, the Ho¨gfeldt three-paramet…

Development of a coupled diffusion denuder system combined with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry for the separation and quantification of molecul…

2009

This study concerns the development of a coupled diffusion denuder system capable of separating and quantifying gaseous molecular iodine (I(2)) and two other highly reactive iodine species, ICl and HOI, which are collectively named activated iodine compounds (AIC). Both I(2) and AIC are key species in the atmospheric chemistry of iodine. 1,3,5-Trimethoxybenzene (1,3,5-TMB)- and alpha-cyclodextrin/(129)I(-) (alpha-CD/(129)I(-))-coated denuders proved to be suitable for the collection of gaseous AIC and I(2), respectively. The experimental collection efficiencies for AIC (tested as ICl) and I(2) agreed well with the theoretical values for gas flow rates in the range between 300 and 1800 mL mi…

Di-, Tri-, and Tetra(pentafluorophenyl) Derivatives for Oligotopic Anion−π Interactions

2013

The present study describes a series of pentafluorobenzyl ammonium salts with two, three, or four C6F5 units in order to investigate simultaneous interactions of several perfluorinated arenes with anions in the crystalline state. Most of the structures show multiple anion-π contacts. However, only 6·2HI reveals an effective encapsulation of the iodide ion by the aromatic units. For comparison, the structure of 4b is investigated because it offers two π-systems with inverse charge distribution to a bromide anion. Only the electron-deficient π-system of the pentafluorophenyl group interacts with the anion.
