Solvent Selection in Liquid Chromatography

Abstract Many solvents can be used to prepare mobile phases in liquid chromatography. Also, mixtures of solvents at different ratios are used to modify the mobile phase properties. This can make solvent selection for method development a hard task, unless suitable guidelines are followed. This chapter summarizes the most common strategies used by skilled chromatographists in reversed-phase, normal-phase, and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography. Phase Distribution Chromatography (PDC) of Polystyrene

Abstract Phase distribution chromatography is a new chromatographic method of fractionating polymers. The separation is achieved by partitioning the sample between the solvent and a polymer phase, in the case a noncross-linked polystyrene of very high molecular weight, which is coated as a thin layer on small glass beads. The temperature must be held below the θ-temperature of the sample. The separation increases sharply with decreasing temperature. The theory of this method is presented and compared with experimental results. The agreement is very good.

Polymer-based materials modified with magnetite nanoparticles for enrichment of phospholipids

[EN] A polymeric material modified with magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) has been synthesized and evaluated as sorbent both for solid-phase extraction (SPE) and dispersive magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of phospholipids (PLs) in human milk samples. The synthesized sorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and its iron content was also determined. Several experimental variables that affect the extraction performance (e.g. loading solvent, breakthrough volume and loading capacity) were investigated and a comparison between conventional SPE and MSPE modalities was done. The present study aims at the isolation and identification of diverse phenolic polyketides from Aloe vera (L.) Burm.f. and Aloe plicatilis (L.) Miller and includes their 5-LOX/COX-1 inhibiting potency. After initial Sephadex-LH20 gel filtration and combined silica gel 60- and RP18-CC, three dihydroisocoumarins (nonaketides), four 5-methyl-8-C-glucosylchromones (heptaketides) from A. vera, and two hexaketide-naphthalenes from A. plicatilis have been isolated by means of HSCCC. The Generation Effect: Cavity Accessibility in Dense‐Shell Polyphenylene Dendrimers

Size exclusion is a widespread phenomenon in supra- and macromolecular chemistry. Herein, the size exclusion properties of polyphenylene dendrimers on the surface of high fundamental frequency quartz crystal microbalances are reported. For this purpose, a new dense fifth-generation polyphenylene dendrimer, which was previously not possible owing to the high steric demand of the dendron arms, was synthesized. By increasing the volume and size of subjected analytes an affinity shift from smaller to larger dendrimers can be obtained.

Quantitative Prediction of Concentration Effects in Steric Exclusion Chromatography

Abstract A semiempirical model, based on a previous one quantitatively describing the dependence of the elution volume, V(cA), on the concentration of injected polymer, cA, in exclusion chromatography (SEC) at dilute solutions, has been developed. In the derived equation, concentration effects are mainly governed by the Huggins' coefficient, kA, and by the quadratic coefficient in the polynomial expansion of the reduced specific viscosity, kA. Continuous spin fractionation and characterization by size-exclusion chromatography for styrene-butadiene block copolymers.

Abstract Linear and star-shaped styrene–butadiene block copolymers synthesized by anionic polymerization of butadiene and styrene were fractionated by applying a newly developed large-scale fractionation technique, named continuous spin fractionation (CSF). Their molecular weight and polydispersity index ( d  =  M w / M n ) were measured with size-exclusion chromatography and static light scattering. In vitro degradation of porous PLLA/pearl powder composite scaffolds

Abstract The in vitro degradation behavior of poly- l -lactide (PLLA), PLLA/aragonite pearl powder and PLLA/vaterite pearl powder scaffolds was investigated. The scaffolds were soaked in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) up to 200 days. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to observe any degradation of the scaffolds. Degradation behaviors such as changes in pH, porosity, bulk density, water absorption, weight loss and mechanical properties were discussed. Abstract A liquid phase microextraction based on hollow fibre followed by liquid chromatographic determination was developed for the extraction and quantitation of the hallucinogenic muscimol from urine samples.
