This study was undertaken to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and time required by first responders to assess the carotid pulse in potentially pulseless patients. We conducted a prospective, randomized study of first responders (n = 206; four different training levels) and were blinded as to the patients' conditions in the cardiac operating rooms of a university hospital. INTRODUCTION: The aim of this naturalistic exploratory study was to examine whether blood antipsychotic drug concentrations can predict rehospitalizations in chronically medicated patients. METHODS: The study included schizophrenic outpatients under clozapine (CLZ) maintenance treatment, supervised by therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM). Patients were observed for a period of 21 months. Their on average monthly measured plasma levels and the date of rehospitalizations were recorded. The effect of 10 weeks of running training and termination of training on the regional distribution of cardiac glucose uptake and protein synthesis were studied in isolated perfused hearts in male rats. The left ventricular glucose uptake in hearts from sedentary rats was 1.87 +/- 0.14 mumol/min per g protein (mean +/- SE), being about 30% higher in the subendocardial than in the subepicardial layer (p less than 0.05). The gradient of left ventricular glucose uptake was similar to the controls in the rats retired from training, but was absent in the trained animals. BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to evaluate in patients with acute ischemic stroke the relationship between immuno-inflammatory variables, clinical outcome and infarct site. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated plasma levels of IL-1beta, TNF-alpha, IL-6 and IL-10, E-selectin, P-selectin, sICAM-1 ,sVCAM-1 vWF, TPA and PAI-1. RESULTS: Patients with cardioembolic subtype showed significantly higher median plasma levels of TNF-alpha, IL-6, IL-1beta whereas the lacunar subtype showed significantly lower median plasma levels of TNF-alpha, IL-6 and IL-1beta.
