Interpreting studies: a critical view from within
2009
The pa…
Human endothelial cell-based assay for endotoxin as sensitive as the conventional Limulus Amebocyte Lysate assay
2014
AbstractEndotoxin, also known as lipopolysaccharide (LPS) produced by bacteria can be present in any liquid or on any biomaterial even if the material is sterile. Endotoxin in mammals can cause fever, inflammation, cell and tissue damage and irreversible septic shock and death. In the body, endothelial cells making up the blood vasculature and endothelial cells in vitro rapidly react to minute amounts of endotoxin resulting in a rapid induction of the cell adhesion molecule E-selectin. In this study we have used immunofluorescent staining to evaluate the expression of E-selectin on human microvascular endothelial cells from the skin (HDMEC) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC)…
Stir bar sorptive-dispersive microextraction for trace determination of triphenyl and diphenyl phosphate in urine of nail polish users
2018
Abstract This work describes a new analytical method useful for monitoring the human exposure to the endocrine-disrupting plasticizer triphenyl phosphate (TPP) via nail polish use. The method allows trace determination of this parent compound and its main metabolite, namely diphenyl phosphate (DPP), in urine samples of nail polish users. The method is based on a novel microextraction technique termed stir bar sorptive-dispersive microextraction (SBSDME) using a magnetic composite made of CoFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles embedded into a mixed-mode weak anion exchange polymer (Strata™-X-AW), followed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). The main parameters involved in t…
Altered postural control and stability in cirrhotic patients with minimal hepatic encephalopathy correlate with cognitive deficits
2017
Background & Aims: Cognitive dysfunction in cirrhotic patients with minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) is associated with falls. Alterations in postural control and stability could contribute to increase falls risk in these patients. We aimed to assess whether postural control and direction-specific limits of stability are altered in cirrhotic patients with MHE compared to patients without MHE and controls. We also assessed if alterations in postural control correlate with neurological impairment and/or blood biomarkers. Methods: Posturography analysis, attention Stroop test and bimanual and visuo-motor coordination tests were performed in 18 controls, 19 patients with cirrhosis without M…
Cellular Oxygen Concentration
1976
At low oxygen levels the intracellular or intramitochondrial concentration of molecular oxygen together with the amount of reduced cytochrome oxydase determines the rate of oxygen utilization. Below the so-called “critical oxygen concentration”, i.e. the value, at which a drop in the rate of oxygen uptake has its first evidence, the kinetic is described by the oxygen affinity (Km) of the respiratory chain, i.e. the concentration value for half maximal rate of oxygen uptake.
Stationary and Initial-Terminal Value Problem for Collective Decision Making via Mean-Field Games
2017
Given a large number of homogeneous players that are distributed across three possible states, we consider the problem in which these players have to control their transition rates, following some optimality criteria. The optimal transition rates are based on the players' knowledge of their current state and of the distribution of all the other players, thus introducing mean-field terms in the running and the terminal cost. The first contribution is a mean-field model that takes into account the macroscopic and the microscopic dynamics. The second contribution is the study of the mean-field equilibrium resulting from solving the initial-terminal value problem, involving the Kolmogorov equat…
Perturbation of the Lyapunov spectra of periodic orbits
2012
We describe all Lyapunov spectra that can be obtained by perturbing the derivatives along periodic orbits of a diffeomorphism. The description is expressed in terms of the finest dominated splitting and Lyapunov exponents that appear in the limit of a sequence of periodic orbits, and involves the majorization partial order. Among the applications, we give a simple criterion for the occurrence of universal dynamics.
Cycles in continuous and discrete dynamical systems : computations, computer-assisted proofs, and computer experiments
2009
The present work is devoted to calculation of periodic solutions and bifurcation research in quadratic systems, Lienard system, and non-unimodal one-dimensional discrete maps using modern computational capabilities and symbolic computing packages. In the first chapter the problem of Academician A.N. Kolmogorov on localization and modeling of cycles of quadratic systems is considered. For the investigation of small limit cycles (so-called local 16th Hilbert’s problem) the method of calculation of Lyapunov quantities (or Poincaré-Lyapunov constants) is used. To calculate symbolic expressions for the Lyapunov quantities the Lyapunov method to the case of non-analytical systems was generalized. …
Polymeric monolithic microcartridges with gold nanoparticles for the analysis of protein biomarkers by on-line solid-phase extraction capillary elect…
2020
In this study, polymeric monoliths with gold nanoparticles (AuNP@monolith) were investigated as microcartridges for the analysis of protein biomarkers by on-line solid-phase extraction capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry (SPE-CE-MS). “Plug-and-play” microcartridges (7 mm) were prepared from a glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)-based monolithic capillary column (5 cm x 250 µm i.d.), which was modified with ammonia and subsequently functionalized with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The performance of these novel microcartridges was evaluated with human transthyretin (TTR), which is a protein related to different types of familial amyloidotic polyneuropathies (FAP). Protein retention depended on…
Multicommutation cold vapour atomic fluorescence determination of Hg in water.
2002
Abstract A multicommutation-based method has been developed for the on-line direct atomic fluorescence spectrometric (AFS) determination of Hg in waters without any previous sample treatment. The performance of the proposed procedure has been compared with that of a conventional AFS system based on continuous mode measurements. In short, the use of multicommutation, together with a reduction of the size of the liquid–gas phase separator, provides an increase of the laboratory productivity by improving the sample throughput by a factor of 3.6 and strongly reduces the sample consumed by a factor of 6 and reagent consumed by a factor of 8.4. The waste generation is reduced by a factor of 2.4 a…
