A strain of Lasiodiplodia mediterranea, a fungus associated with grapevine decline in Sicily, produced several metabolites in liquid medium. In less than five months, COVID-19 has spread from a small focus in Wuhan, China, to more than 5 million people in almost every country in the world, dominating the concern of most governments and public health systems. The social and political distresses caused by this epidemic will certainly impact our world for a long time to come. Here, we synthesize lessons from a range of scientific perspectives rooted in epidemiology, virology, genetics, ecology and evolutionary biology so as to provide perspective on how this pandemic started, how it is developing, and how best we can stop it.

Abstract Desulfurococcus amylolyticus is an anaerobic and hyperthermophilic crenarchaeon that can use various carbohydrates as energy sources. We found a gene encoding a glycoside hydrolase family 57 amylolytic enzymes (DApu) in a putative carbohydrate utilization gene cluster in the genome of D. amylolyticus . This gene has an open reading frame of 1,878 bp and consists of 626 amino acids with a molecular mass of 71 kDa. Recombinant DApu (rDApu) completely hydrolyzed pullulan to maltotriose by attacking α-1,6-glycosidic linkages, and was able to produce glucose and maltose from soluble starch and amylopectin. Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a clonal stem cell disorder frequently associated with inefficient granulopoiesis showing dysplastic polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs). To assess PMN functionality in MDS in a clinical routine setting, 30 MDS patients and ten healthy volunteers were analyzed for PMN and monocyte phenotype and function (degranulation, CD62L shedding, oxidative burst and phagocytosis) upon stimulation with lipopolysaccharide by multi-color flow cytometry (MCFC). International audience; A water-soluble template-assembled synthetic G-quartet (TASQ) based on the use of a macrocyclodecapeptide scaffold was designed to display stable intramolecular folds alone in solution. The preformation of the guanine quartet, demonstrated by NMR and CD investigations, results in enhanced peroxidase-type biocatalytic activities and improved quadruplex-interacting properties. Comparison of its DNAzyme-boosting properties with the ones of previously published TASQ revealed that, nowadays, it is the best DNAzyme-boosting agent.
