Combining high performance thin layer chromatography with minispectrometer-fiber optic probe-coupled to smartphone for in place analysis: Lactose qua…
2021
ABSTRACT An in place colorimetric method has been proposed for estimation of the quantity of lactose in several matrix (milk, water effluents and surfaces). Analyzing the amount of this carbohydrate it can be control the product, the cleanliness of the parts of the dairy companies and it can avoid contamination of milk products produced there. This method combines the use of HPTLC for sugars separation with novel analytical devices as minispectrophotometer with fiber optic coupled to a smartphone. In order to measure the lactose a colorimetric reaction has been used. Variable volumes of samples or stock solutions were deposited in nano-silica gel layer, a mobile phase of acetonitrile:water:…

Ras-pathway has a dual role in yeast galactose metabolism
2007
AbstractIn the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae the genes involved in galactose metabolism (GAL1,7,10) are transcriptionally activated more than a 1000-fold in the presence of galactose as the sole carbon source in the culture media. In the present work, we monitored the activity of the GAL10 gene promoter in different Ras-cAMP genetic backgrounds. We demonstrate that overexpression of C-terminus of the nucleotide exchange factor Cdc25p stimulates GAL10 transcription in yeast strains carrying the contemporary deletion of both RAS genes. Moreover, the deletion of the chromosomal CDC25 gene provokes impaired growth on galactose based media in yeast strain lacking both RAS genes and adenylate cy…
Glycosylated macromolecular conjugates of antiviral drugs with a polyaspartamide.
2004
Two new polymeric conjugates for specific liver targeting were prepared by conjugation of sugar moieties and antiviral drugs to alpha, beta-poly[N-2-(hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide] (PHEA). PHEA-galactopyranosylphenylthiocarbamide-mono-O-succinylganciclovir (conjugate 7) and PHEA-mannopyranosylphenylthiocarbamide-O-succinylacyclovir (conjugate 8) were synthesized according to a multi-step procedure which allowed for obtaining high product yield and process standardization. Conjugate 7 contained 7.5 and 8.5% of galactose and ganciclovir (substituent/repeating unit, mol/mol), respectively, and conjugate 8 contained 14.2 and 10.8% of mannose and acyclovir, respectively. In vitro studies demonstr…
The Origins of Lactase Persistence in Europe
2009
Lactase persistence (LP) is common among people of European ancestry, but with the exception of some African, Middle Eastern and southern Asian groups, is rare or absent elsewhere in the world. Lactase gene haplotype conservation around a polymorphism strongly associated with LP in Europeans (−13,910 C/T) indicates that the derived allele is recent in origin and has been subject to strong positive selection. Furthermore, ancient DNA work has shown that the −13,910*T (derived) allele was very rare or absent in early Neolithic central Europeans. It is unlikely that LP would provide a selective advantage without a supply of fresh milk, and this has lead to a gene-culture coevolutionary model w…
Comparative study of the lubricant performance of Compritol® HD5 ATO and Compritol® 888 ATO: effect of polyethylene glycol behenate on lubricant capa…
2003
The aim of this paper is to study the lubricant capacity of Compritol HD5 ATO, a glyceryl and polyethylene glycol dibehenate, obtained by atomization. This material is compared to Compritol 888 ATO, constituted only by glyceryl dibehenate. First, this study verifies that Compritol HD5 ATO and Compritol 888 ATO present the same granular characteristics and that their mixes with Lactopress present no structural differences. Secondly, in term of compressibility and cohesiveness, the use of Compritol 888 ATO or Compritol HD5 ATO with Lactopress does not involve any significant modification. Finally, the minor difference of lubricant capacity between Compritol HD5 ATO and Compritol 888 ATO has n…
Model-based biotechnological potential analysis of Kluyveromyces marxianus central metabolism
2016
Abstract The non-conventional yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus is an emerging industrial producer for many biotechnological processes. Here, we show the application of a biomass-linked stoichiometric model of central metabolism that is experimentally validated, and mass and charge balanced for assessing the carbon conversion efficiency of wild type and modified K. marxianus. Pairs of substrates (lactose, glucose, inulin, xylose) and products (ethanol, acetate, lactate, glycerol, ethyl acetate, succinate, glutamate, phenylethanol and phenylalanine) are examined by various modelling and optimisation methods. Our model reveals the organism’s potential for industrial application and metabolic engi…
Safety and efficacy of a probiotic-containing infant formula supplemented with 2'-fucosyllactose: a double-blind randomized controlled trial
2022
Abstract Background Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) have important and diverse biological functions in early life. This study tested the safety and efficacy of a starter infant formula containing Limosilactobacillus (L.) reuteri DSM 17938 and supplemented with 2’-fucosyllactose (2’FL). Methods Healthy infants < 14 days old (n = 289) were randomly assigned to a bovine milk-based formula containing L. reuteri DSM 17938 at 1 × 107 CFU/g (control group; CG) or the same formula with added 1.0 g/L 2’FL (experimental group; EG) until 6 months of age. A non-randomized breastfed group served as reference (BF; n = 60). The primary endpoint was weight gain through 4 months of age in the formula-…
An Integrated Approach for the Valorization of Cheese Whey
2021
Taking into account the large amount of whey that is produced during the cheese production process and the constant demand by society for more sustainable processes, in accordance with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the circular economy concept, it is necessary to adapt two-unit operations into a single process, allowing us to not only valorize a part of the whey but the whole process, which is known as bioprocess integration. In this sense, the adaptation of different processes, for example, physicochemical (micro, ultra and nanofiltration) and fermentation, that are commonly used to obtain proteins, lactose and other compounds with different activities (antioxidant, antifungal, …
Effect of Innovative Food Processing Technologies on the Physicochemical and Nutritional Properties and Quality of Non-Dairy Plant-Based Beverages
2020
Increase in allergenicity towards cow’s milk, lactose intolerance, the prevalence of hypercholesterolemia, and flexitarian choice of food consumption have increased the market for cow’s milk alternatives. Non-dairy plant-based beverages are useful alternatives because of the presence of bioactive components with health-promoting properties, which attract health-conscious consumers. However, the reduced nutritional value and sensory acceptability of the plant-based beverages (such as flavor, taste, and solubility) compared to cow’s milk pose a big threat to its place in the market. Thermal treatments are commonly used to ensure the quality of plant-based beverages during storage. However, th…
