Orthotopic bladder cancer xenografts are essential for testing novel therapies and molecular manipulations of cell lines in vivo. Current xenografts rely on tumor cell inoculation by intravesical instillation or direct injection into the bladder wall. Instillation is limited by the lack of cell lines that are tumorigenic when delivered in this manner. The invasive model inflicts morbidity on the mice by the need for laparotomy and mobilization of the bladder. Furthermore this procedure is complex and time-consuming. Objective To investigate if mutation of the angiotensin II (Ang II) receptors AT2 is involved in primary vesico-ureteric reflux (VUR) in humans. Patients and methods Genetic polymorphisms in the AT1 and AT2 receptors was evaluated in 23 patients having the most common congenital urological abnormality, namely primary congenital VUR. The occurrence of the A1166C transition in the AT1 receptor gene and the A-1332G transition in the AT2 receptor gene were evaluated and compared with the incidence in normal controls with no urological abnormalities. Automated DNA-image cytometry: a prognostic tool in infiltrating bladder carcinoma?

In a retrospective study, paraffin-embedded cystectomy specimens obtained from 46 patients with bladder cancer (stage pT1 — pT4a, pN0, pN2) were analysed for tumor DNA ploidy and proliferation using automated image cytometry (LEYTAS). In 41 cases, DNA ploidy could be measured. Estimation of proliferation was possible in 26 tumors. The number of cells with a DNA content higher than 5C could be calculated in 38 of the tumors. All these three parameters are shown to correlate with patient outcome.

Sarcomatoid carcinoma of urinary bladder: Immunohistochemical study of an uncommon case

A case of sarcomatoid carcinoma of the bladder is reported herein. Immunohistochemical staining with human pancytokeratin antibody was negative, while vimentin staining was strongly positive, suggesting a diagnosis of sarcoma of the bladder. Further immunohistochemical analysis revealed positivity for AE1/AE3 cytokeratins, permitting a correct diagnosis of sarcomatoid carcinoma of the bladder. It can be difficult to distinguish between sarcomatoid carcinoma, undifferentiated carcinoma and sarcoma, particularly if the biopsy specimens are of small size. Primary Mucinous Adenocarcinoma of the Urinary Bladder with Signet-Ring Cells: Description of an Uncommon Case and Critical Points in Its Management

We present an uncommon case of mucinous adenocarcinoma of the bladder (MAB) with signet-ring cells extensively infiltrating prostate gland and pelvic/retroperitoneal lymph node stations and not responsive to usual systemic chemotherapy regimens. This case highlights the important features of MAB including the pattern of tumor spread, the tendency for initial misdiagnosis, and the importance of immunohistochemical study in order to define its primary origin from the bladder and choose the most appropriate treatment since the beginning.

The neuroendocrine carcinoma is defined as a high-grade malignant neuroendocrine neoplasm arising from enterochromaffin cells, usually disposed in the mucosa of gastric and respiratory tracts. The localization in the gallbladder is rare. Knowledge of these gallbladder tumors is limited and based on isolated case reports. Introduction: The prevalence of rare diseases is very important for health care research. According to the European Surveillance of Congenital Anomalies (EUROCAT) registers, the live prevalence for exstrophy and/or epispadias (grades 1–3) is reported with 1:23,255 (95% CI: 1:26,316; 1:20,000). A Europe-wide prevalence evaluation based on reports from excellence centers estimates a prevalence for exstrophies of 1:32,200 and for isolated epispadias of 1:96,800 in 2010.
