Translingual text mining for identification of language pair phenomena

2016

Translingual Text Mining (TTM) is an innovative technology of natural language processing for building multilingual parallel corpora, processing machine translation, contextual knowledge acquisition, information extraction, query profiling, language modeling, contextual word sensing, creating feature test sets and for variety of other purposes. The Keynote Lecture will discuss opportunities and challenges of this computational technology. In particular, the focus will be made on identification of language pair phenomena and their applications to building holistic language model which is a novel tool for processing machine translation, supporting professional translations, evaluation of tran…

Function Words Constrain On-Line Recognition of Verbs and Nouns in French 18-Month-Olds

2013

In this experiment using the conditioned head-turn procedure, 18-month-old French-learning toddlers were trained to respond to either a target noun (“la balle”/the ball) or a target verb (“je mange”/I eat). They were then tested on target word recognition in two syntactic contexts: the target word was preceded either by a correct function word (“une balle”/a ball or “on mange”/they eat), or by an incorrect function word, signaling a word from the other category (*“on balle”/they ball or *“une mange”/a eat). We showed that 18-month-olds exploit the syntactic context on-line to recognize the target word: verbs were recognized when preceded by a personal pronoun but not when preceded by a dete…

First results of PACTE group's experimental research on translation competence acquisition : the acquisition of declarative knowledge of translation

2014

Autors llistats per ordre alfabètic. Investigadora principal: A. Hurtado Albir This paper presents the first results of empirical-experimental research into the Acquisition of Translation Competence (ATC): the acquisition of declarative knowledge about translation. This study is based on our previous research about Translation Competence (TC). Some of the data collection instruments have, however, been adapted for current use. Details of our research design include type of study, universe and sample population, study variables, data collection instruments, and data analysis processes. The dependent variables were knowledge of translation; translation project; identification and solution of …

Ontology languages for the semantic web: A never completely updated review

2006

This paper gives a never completely account of approaches that have been used for the research community for representing knowledge. After underlining the importance of a layered approach and the use of standards, it starts with early efforts used for artificial intelligence researchers. Then recent approaches, aimed mainly at the semantic web, are described. Coding examples from the literature are presented in both sections. Finally, the semantic web ontology creation process, as we envision it, is introduced.

Position coding effects in a 2D scenario: the case of musical notation.

2013

How does the cognitive system encode the location of objects in a visual scene? In the past decade, this question has attracted much attention in the field of visual-word recognition (e.g., "jugde" is perceptually very close to "judge"). Letter transposition effects have been explained in terms of perceptual uncertainty or shared "open bigrams". In the present study, we focus on note position coding in music reading (i.e., a 2D scenario). The usual way to display music is the staff (i.e., a set of 5 horizontal lines and their resultant 4 spaces). When reading musical notation, it is critical to identify not only each note (temporal duration), but also its pitch (y-axis) and its temporal seq…

Named Entity Recognition and Linking in Tweets Based on Linguistic Similarity

2017

This work proposes a novel approach in Named Entity rEcognition and Linking (NEEL) in tweets, applying the same strategy already presented for Question Answering (QA) by the same authors. The previous work describes a rule-based and ontology-based system that attempts to retrieve the correct answer to a query from the DBPedia ontology through a similarity measure between the query and the ontology labels. In this paper, a tweet is interpreted as a query for the QA system: both the text and the thread of a tweet are a sequence of statements that have been linked to the ontology. Provided that tweets make extensive use of informal language, the similarity measure and the underlying processes …

Rigal — a programming language for compiler writing

2005

A new programming language for compiler writing is described. The main data structures are atoms, lists and trees. The control structures are based on advanced pattern matching. All phases of compilation, including parsing, optimization and code generation, can be programmed in this language in short and readable form. Sample compiler written in RIGAL is presented.
