2016

In this article we examine some effects of language contact in the multilingual province of Trento, where Romance and Germanic varieties have been in contact for centuries. We focus on the syntax of phrasal verbs (e. g. ‘go out’, ‘get away’) in Trentin, a Romance dialect group, in Fassan, a Rhaeto-romance variety, and in Cimbrian, a German(ic) minority language. In particular, we deal with two word order phenomena which might be attributed to contact with the more prestigious or widespread varieties spoken in the area: (i) in some Fassan phrasal verbs we find the order «Verb – XP – Locative element», which resembles the German order; (ii) in Cimbrian various syntactic positions are possible…

The role of Dutch in the development of East Anglian English

2013

Dutch speakers may or may not have contributed a certain amount of lexical material to modern East Anglian dialects. There is a much stronger case to be made, however, for arguing that Dutch speakers did have a rather profound infl uence on the morphology of East Anglian English, dating from the time when almost forty percent of the population of the capital of East Anglia, Norwich, were refugees from the Low Countries. That infl uence was indirect, and mediated through mechanisms of linguistic change associated with language contact.

Implizite Sprachmischung in Kontaktidiomen zweisprachiger Oberschlesier

2020

Early language contact research often focused on the so-called explicit language mix-ing, where the elements of one language were clearly present in the second language. This article is devoted to the less frequent manifestations of the so-called implicit lan-guage mixing, where only structures of one language are used, whereas the means of expression are taken from the other language. The research corpus is made up of state-ments by bilingual Upper Silesians, who were interviewed as part of a project on time witnesses accounts. The informants live in an ethnically and nationally heterogeneous region, whose inhabitants have different language repertoires depending on factors such as place o…

"Me ollaan mukana tässä experimentissä" : lingvististiska resurser och språkpraktiker i tvåspråkiga ungdomssamtal i Haparanda, Stockholm och Helsingf…

2017

The thesis explores bilingual adolescents’ language use, linguistic resources, and language practices in interaction at three junior high schools in Haparanda, a Swedish town on the country’s northeastern border with Finland. A comparison is also made with interaction among bilingual adolescents at two Sweden-Finnish junior high schools in Stockholm and at one Swedish-speaking junior high school in Helsinki. The aim of the study is to increase our knowledge of bilingual adolescents’ interaction practices and language repertoires, i.e. translanguaging, in interaction. The primary data consists of close to eleven hours of video- and audio-recorded informal group and pair conversations. The da…

The Linguistic Landscape of the Valencian Community: A Comparative Analysis of Bilingual and Multilingual Signs in Three Different Areas

2019

During the last decades, the promotion of multilingualism has been key when designing linguistic policies in Europe. Previous research studies have focused on how languages are employed in fields such as education, media, and urban sites, among others. Bearing all this in mind, the aim of this paper is to analyse the linguistic landscapes of three municipalities located in a bilingual region in Spain, that of the Valencian Community. Thus, issues such as language contact, language dominance, and the languages used by a number of institutions on private and public signs were examined. As for the method, over 140 pictures of language signs were taken in order to examine language contact, lang…

Zu den Ursachen lexikalischer Transferenz vor dem Hintergrund des deutsch-polnischen Sprachkontaktes in Oberschlesien

2021

Multilingualism and language contact were confirmed as historical phenomena already in ancient times. However, it did not find its way into scientific research until the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. Since then, a comprehensive terminology has been developed in order to investigate and describe the effects of language contact. A common phenomenon in this field is lexical transfer, which bilingual people often use to bridge their lack of competence in the second language. However, the cause of the transfer of lexemes from one language to the other can also occur from the lesser to the better mastered language in the case of asymmetrical bilingualism, which therefor…
