Adult Migrant Language Education in a Diversifying World

Localising Supranational Concepts of Literacy in Adult Second Language Teaching
2012
In this chapter we are analyzing how literacy is conceptualized within education – more specifically within adult second language education in Denmark and Finland. Language and literacy are generally described as highly important for societal growth, coherence and democracy in statements from governments and international agencies. However, in our research literacy appears as a more complex and contradictory resource that is increasingly used as a demarcation line for inclusion and exclusion in the ever more globalised national states. peerReviewed
Contesting language policy for asylum seekers in the Northern periphery: the story of Tailor F
2020
AbstractThis article is about navigating asylum, employment and language policy in a new country as an asylum seeker. Through the story of one individual, we show that profound inequalities are exacerbated when forced migrants are limited in their choice of language they might study or use. The individual is Tailor F, an Iraqi man seeking asylum, and the country is Finland, officially bilingual, with a majority language (Finnish) and a minority language (Swedish). Finland’s official bilingualism does not extend evenly to language education provided for asylum seekers, who are taught Finnish regardless of the region where they are placed. Upon arrival, Tailor F was housed in a reception cent…
Choosing an A2-language and language education from teachers’ point of view
2015
Language education policy consists of multiple levels, all the way from the European Union to teachers in local schools. Bearing in mind that even teachers have a role to play in language education policy our bachelor’s thesis aimed to create an overall picture of what knowledge do primary school teachers and headmasters in the Jyväskylä area possess relating language education matters and more specifically the A2-language. The study also examined the situations in which the teachers would or would not recommend the A2-language to a pupil. How the teachers act in the process of choosing the A2-language was also the focus of this study. This article affords a glance to our research and its r…
Szkolny polonista na usługach rynku pracy? O kształceniu językowo-komunikacyjnym w czasach (po)nowoczesnych

Attempts to adjust education closely to the needs ot the job market and expectations of employers constitute a distinctive trend in modem education policies. The article discusses this issue in relation to the Polish language as a school subject, for the teaching of which an employer's perspective is seemingly irrelevant. The author, however, argues against this point of view, showing how the linguistic and communicative competencies developed in the Polish language classroom constitute an indispensable element of soft skills. The article also quotes results of pilot studies conducted among middle school (gimnazjum) pupils to examine their level of mastery of two key skills sought after by …

The article’s theme concerns challenges encountered in the 21st century in the course of language communicative education within the scope of Polish as a native language. The author expresses conviction that socialisation process does not substitute for education, and therefore one of the paramount purposes/aims of language education within the scope of native language is to cater to the language-communicative needs of students stemming from cultural transformation taking place in the contemporary world. New tasks that a Polish language teacher needs to face are developing the so-called new communicative competency which facilitates communicative acts in media-dominated world of today, incl…

English language teachers' job satisfaction in upper secondary schools in Finland
2009
