Indium surfactant effect on AlN/GaN heterostructures grown by metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy: Applications to intersubband transitions

2006

We report on a dramatic improvement of the optical and structural properties of AlN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) grown by metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy using indium as a surfactant. This improvement is observed using photoluminescence as well as x-ray diffraction. Atomic force microscopy shows different surface morphologies between samples grown with and without In. This is ascribed to a modified relaxation mechanism induced by different surface kinetics. These improved MQWs exhibit intersubband absorption at short wavelength (2 mu m). The absorption linewidth is as low as 65 meV and the absorption coefficient is increased by 85%.

Electrochemistry of methylene blue at an alkanethiol modified electrode

2012

International audience; Gold surfaces were derivatized with decanethiol. The electrochemistry of methylene blue at these modified electrodes was investigated in function of the gold cleaning process and compared with the results obtained at a bare gold electrode. Cyclic voltammetry at low methylene blue concentrations (c(MB) <= 16 mu M) yielded surface behavior data. The properties of the film vary with the electrode pretreatment. Without electrochemical cleaning step, the standard potential at a gold electrode modified with 1-decanethiol is nearly the same as on a bare gold electrode. On the other hand, when the electrode is electrochemically cleaned before adsorption of the alkanethiols, …

Trimesic acid on Cu in ethanol: Potential-dependent transition from 2-D adsorbate to 3-D metal-organic framework

2017

We report the potential-dependent interactions of trimesic acid with Cu surfaces in EtOH. CV experiments and electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy show the presence of an adsorbed trimesic acid layer on Cu at potentials lower than 0 V vs Cu. The BTC coverage increases as the potential increases, reaching a maximum at 0 V. Based on molecular dynamics simulations, we report adsorption geometries and possible structures of the organic adlayer. We find that, depending on the crystal facet, trimesic acid adsorbs either flat or with one or two of the carboxyl groups facing the metal surface. At higher coverages, a multi-layer forms that is composed mostly of flat-lying trimesic acid…

Short Photoluminescence Lifetimes Linked to Crystallite Dimensions, Connectivity, and Perovskite Crystal Phases.

2022

Time-correlated single photon counting has been conducted to gain further insights into the short photoluminescence lifetimes (nanosecond) of lead iodide perovskite (MAPbI3) thin films (∼100 nm). We analyze three different morphologies, compact layer, isolated island, and connected large grain films, from 14 to 300 K using a laser excitation power of 370 nJ/cm2. Lifetime fittings from the Generalized Berberan-Santos decay model range from 0.5 to 6.5 ns, pointing to quasi-direct bandgap emission despite the three different sample strains. The high energy band emission for the isolated-island morphology shows fast recombination rate centers up to 4.8 ns–1, compared to the less than 2 ns–1 for…

Recensione di The Players’ Advice to Hamlet: the Rhetorical Acting Method from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment

2020

The Players’ Advice to Hamlet (2020) written by David Wiles and published by Cambridge University Press (370 p.) is a volume that houses resources which have been analysed during a long period of work, and underlines methods and models of the theatrical philology.

Relationship between heart rate variability and repeated sprint exercise in young soccer players

2014

Aim: The sport of soccer is characterized by neuromuscular performance resulting in short bursts interspersed by brief recovery periods over an extended period of time. Several studies suggest that the cardiac autonomic nervous system (ANS) assessed by heart rate variability (HRV) may provide useful information regarding the functional adaptations to training stimulus. Although HRV has often been associated with aerobic power and cardiovascular fitness, the influence of sympathovagal balance on neuromuscular performance in young athletes is not well assessed. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of the autonomic system on the performance of repeated sprints, involving predomina…

Confinement-deconfinement transition due to spontaneous symmetry breaking in quantum Hall bilayers

2015

Band-inverted electron-hole bilayers support quantum spin Hall insulator and exciton condensate phases. We investigate such a bilayer in an external magnetic field. We show that the interlayer correlations lead to formation of a helical quantum Hall exciton condensate state. In contrast to the chiral edge states of the quantum Hall exciton condensate in electron-electron bilayers, existence of the counterpropagating edge modes results in formation of a ground state spin-texture not supporting gapless single-particle excitations. This feature has deep consequences for the low energy behavior of the system. Namely, the charged edge excitations in a sufficiently narrow Hall bar are confined, i…

Optimization of ZnO:Al/Ag/ZnO:Al structures for ultra-thin high-performance transparent conductive electrodes

2012

Al-doped ZnO (AZO)/Ag/AZO multilayer coatings (50-70 nm thick) were grown at room temperature on glass substrates with different silver layer thickness, from 3 to 19 nm, by using radio frequency magnetron sputtering. Thermal stability of the compositional, optical and electrical properties of the AZO/Ag/AZO structures were investigated up to 400 °C and as a function of Ag film thickness. An AZO film as thin as 20 nm is an excellent barrier to Ag diffusion. The inclusion of 9.5 nm thin silver layer within the transparent conductive oxide (TCO) material leads to a maximum enhancement of the electro-optical characteristics. The excellent measured properties of low resistance, high transmittanc…

EVE Online is not for everyone : Exceptionalism in online gaming cultures

2019

EVE Online is a space-themed massively multiplayer online game that has developed a reputation for being difficult and unwelcoming to new players. In this article, I explore how an emphasis on exceptionalism is present throughout discussions about EVE by its developer, the enthusiast gaming press, and survey responses of current players (N = 647). Taken together, information from these sources reinforces a public perception that EVE is a game that is of interest only to a very specific kind of player. In turn, these findings add further evidence to the long-argued position of feminist game scholars: Not all gaming communities are open to all players. Rather, who plays, what they play, when …
