Does Replacing Face-to-face Lectures with Pre-recorded Video Lectures Affect Learning Outcomes?
2019
Videoing lectures have been popular during the past decade. The literature on the effect of video lectures is controversial. Some studies indicate that video lectures have a positive effect on learning outcomes and student satisfaction, while some state that there is no effect at all. In this paper, we share the results of a university undergraduate course, where half of the lectures were replaced by pre-recorded lectures. The results indicate that using pre-recorded lectures had a statistically significant positive effect on grades. Also, the students’ satisfaction levels were higher. peerReviewed

Cognitive Load and Learning in the Study of Multiple Documents
2018
This study had two main purposes. First, to test how the availability of documents in multiple document reading might affect students’ levels of cognitive load. Secondly, to develop an instrument that captures the different sources of load when working with multiple documents. A total of 125 secondary school students read four short texts on transgenic foods and subsequently responded to an open-ended question that required them to write an essay expressing their personal stance towards the topic. Participants in the experimental treatment condition (n = 54) were allowed to go back to the texts any time during the essay task, whereas their peers in the control condition (n = 71) were not al…
Player perceptions of informal learning in non-educational games
2022
The potential of non-educational games in learning is well-established, but there have been relatively few empirical studies attempting to explore the kinds of informal learning take place in non-educational games outside of formal education. Simultaneously, student motivation is known to have a connection to learning outcomes, but there is a lack of research on the relationship between gaming motivations and informal learning in games. This paper aims to fill the gap in research by, firstly, forming an empirically-based understanding of what players perceive they are learning from playing non-educational games, and secondly, exploring the potential connections of self-articulated learning …
A cultural comparison of mindfulness and student performance: Evidence from university students in five countries
2021
Societal and cultural norms are important in shaping how individuals live, study, and work. Of particular interest in recent research is the role of mindfulness, defined as the ability to focus on the present moment, and how it can impact cognitive function and productivity. This study examines the relationship between scholastic achievement and mindfulness among university students in China, Finland, Germany, South Africa, and the United States. Comparisons between countries with respect to self-reported measures of mindfulness, test anxiety levels, and phone usage are analyzed. These measures are used to determine whether mindfulness affects student performance in introductory economics c…
Finnish Experiences of Oecd’s International Assessment of Higher Education Learning Outcomes (ahelo)
2015
The aim of this article is to describe the implementation of International Assessment of Higher Education Learning Outcomes (AHELO) in Finland and to highlight ethical considerations of large-scale international assessments. The Finnish results of the AHELO feasibility study show that a fully-fledged project is possible to carry if special attention is paid to the participation of students in test sessions, if enough time is reserved for the implementation phase and if scoring of open-ended questions is carefully carried out and monitored. It is, however, important that large-scale international assessmentssuch as AHELO do not start to colonialise and converge understandings of what is consi…
