Actigraphic Sleep and Dietary Macronutrient Intake in Children Aged 6–9 Years Old: A Pilot Study
2019
The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between different sleep parameters and energy and macronutrient intake in school-aged children. A total of 203 children 6 to 9 years of age participated in this cross-sectional study. Anthropometric measurements were taken first. Diet was assessed with 3-day food logs and sleep was measured with a questionnaire on sleep quality and a wrist actigraph worn for at least 7 days. A decrease of 165.45 kcal was observed per each additional hour of sleep during the week (β (95% CI) = −165.45 (−274.01, −56.88)
Conditions for the Enhancing Effect of Protease Inhibitors on the Concanavalin A Induced Thymidine Response of Murine Lymphocytes
1983
Incorporation of [3H]-thymidine – [3H]-TdR – into concanavalin A (Con A) stimulated murine splenocytes and thymocytes was found to be enhanced by addition of certain concentrations of phenyl-methyl-sulfonylfluoride (PMSF), di-isopropylfluorophosphate (DFP), N-α-tosyl-<i>L</i>-lysyl-<i>L</i>-chloromethylketone (TLCK), and soybean trypsin inhibitor (SBTI). No enhancement could be observed when mononuclear cells of the peripheral blood were used, and a medium enhancement when thymocytes were applied. Furthermore, no enhancing effect of the protease inhibitors (PI) on the Con A response of murine splenocytes could be observed…
Specific stabilization of the 4F7 molecule on dendritic cells by contact allergens.
1996
Our laboratory has recently developed the monoclonal antibody 4F7 which recognizes a molecule on dendritic cells in the dermis of mice that is upregulated after application of contact allergens in vivo. Furthermore, this antibody detects an antigen on dendritic cells in spleen, lymph nodes and colon. In order to study the influence of contact allergens on the surface expression of the 4F7 molecules on dendritic cells, FACScan analysis of splenic dendritic cells was carried out after in vitro application of contact allergens. Freshly isolated splenic dendritic cells were found to be positive for 4F7, 33D1, N418 (CD11c) and MHC class II. After overnight culture the expression of the dendritic…
Posttranslational modifications by ADAM10 shape myeloid antigen-presenting cell homeostasis in the splenic marginal zone
2021
The spleen contains phenotypically and functionally distinct conventional dendritic cell (cDC) subpopulations, termed cDC1 and cDC2, which each can be divided into several smaller and less well-characterized subsets. Despite advances in understanding the complexity of cDC ontogeny by transcriptional programming, the significance of posttranslational modifications in controlling tissue-specific cDC subset immunobiology remains elusive. Here, we identified the cell-surface–expressed A-disintegrin-and-metalloproteinase 10 (ADAM10) as an essential regulator of cDC1 and cDC2 homeostasis in the splenic marginal zone (MZ). Mice with a CD11c-specific deletion of ADAM10 (ADAM10(ΔCD11c)) exhibited a …
Primary nocturnal enuresis and learning disability
2011
"AIM: Primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE) is the most common sleep disorder in developmental age, with a prevalence of 6-10% between 5 and 16 years of age, impacting on normal emotional and relational developing. Assessing the prevalence of mild learning disorders in enuretic children and the role of enuresis as risk factor to develop them.. . METHODS: Twenty-five patients (14 males) aged 7.59 referred for primary nocturnal enuresis to Sleep Disorder Center for developmental age and Nocturnal Enuresis of Second University of Naples (frequency ≥3\/week), were enrolled in study. Reading abilities were evaluated using MT (Memory and Learning Transfer) and cognitive performance was assessed using …
RADHA - a new male germ line-specific chromosomal protein of Drosophila
1999
A new chromosomal protein - RADHA - of Drosophila is described that is specific for the male germ line. It is encoded by a single-copy gene, located in the region 96C-D of D. melanogaster polytene chromosomes. Transcription of the radha gene is restricted to the primary spermatocyte stage. The protein initially accumulates in some of the Y-chromosomal lampbrush loops. After meiosis it is found in the nuclei of spermatids and might be involved in chromatin rearrangement processes in the male germ line. RADHA is a basic protein with a C-terminal leucine zipper region and several segments capable of forming coiled-coil structures.
Effects of exercise and diet interventions on obesity-related sleep disorders in men: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.
2013
Abstract Background Sleep is essential for normal and healthy living. Lack of good quality sleep affects physical, mental and emotional functions. Currently, the treatments of obesity-related sleep disorders focus more on suppressing sleep-related symptoms pharmaceutically and are often accompanied by side effects. Thus, there is urgent need for alternative ways to combat chronic sleep disorders. This study will investigate underlying mechanisms of the effects of exercise and diet intervention on obesity-related sleep disorders, the role of gut microbiota in relation to poor quality of sleep and day-time sleepiness, as well as the levels of hormones responsible for sleep-wake cycle regulati…
Differential expression of the murine mannose-binding lectins A and C in lymphoid and nonlymphoid organs and tissues.
2003
Abstract Mannose-binding lectin (MBL), a member of the collectin family, binds to carbohydrate structures on the surfaces of micro-organisms and may serve as a recognition molecule of the lectin pathway of complement activation. In rodents two forms, MBL-A and MBL-C, were described and shown to be products of two related, but uncoupled, genes. The liver is the main source of MBL biosynthesis. For rat MBL-A, expression has also been described in the kidney. Here we report that the two forms of murine MBL are differentially expressed in a number of nonhepatic tissues. Real-time RT-PCR revealed that the liver is the major site of expression for both MBL genes. Lower copy numbers were found in …
Production of T suppressor factor specific for the hapten picryl chloride requires both T suppressor cells and an antigen-specific, genetically restr…
1987
Summary We investigated the requirement for activation of T suppressor cells specific for the hapten picryl chloride and the release of hapten-specific T suppressor factor. Using an in vivo experimental system, we report that activation of T suppressor cells and the consequent release of T suppressor factor required two signals: one was provided by primed T suppressor cells, i.e. spleen cells from mice injected with the tolerogen picrylsulphonic acid, and the other was provided by the specific antigen in the context of H-2 gene products. Mechanisms by which the interaction between these two signals led to activation of T suppressor cells and the production of T suppressor factor, as well as…
Management of shortened dental arches and periodontal health: 5-year results of a randomised trial
2014
Summary In a multicentre randomised trial (German Research Association, grants DFG WA 831/2-1 to 2-6, WO 677/2-1.1 to 2-2.1.; controlled-trials.com ISRCTN97265367), patients with complete molar loss in one jaw received either a partial removable dental prosthesis (PRDP) with precision attachments or treatment according to the SDA concept aiming at pre-molar occlusion. The objective of this current analysis was to evaluate the influence of different treatments on periodontal health. Linear mixed regression models were fitted to quantify the differences between the treatment groups. The assessment at 5 years encompassed 59 patients (PRDP group) and 46 patients (SDA group). For the distal meas…
