Reply to Douka et al: Critical evaluation of the Ksâr 'Akil chronologies

2015

Our paper (1) proposes a new chronology for Ksâr 'Akil based on 16 accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) determinations on shells. To minimize the possibility of dating diagenetically compromised samples, we conducted amino acid racemization analyses on the intracrystalline proteins, oxygen isotope analysis, and geochemical characterization of all dated shells. Our calibrated radiocarbon ages fit well with existing Levantine chronologies, but are up to 4,000 y older than Douka et al.’s (2). Our paper explores several possibilities for this difference, whereas Douka et al. (3) provide alternative explanations. They accept our radiocarbon ages as correct but question our sample selection and Ba…

Works with Heart and Soul

2008

He states:" I love letters for they are atoms of communication, ambiguous objects and subjects of experimentation of avant-gardes in XX century" . He does not manage to fulfil his curiosity and his huge and not hidden pleasure to go on experimenting with those little elements which make alphabets, living not only by themselves but also as members of a coupled system, that is syllables, or of a more complex one, that is word. Every letter is accurately analysed, stripped down and then assembled again as in the patient research for a common denominator which stand at the base of each one of them. One or more standards are individuated in order to compose them in the space, so translating a co…

Louseborne relapsing fever in young migrants, sicily, Italy, july-september 2015

2016

To the Editor: During the early 20th century, at the end of World War I, and during World War II, louseborne relapsing fever (LBRF) caused by Borrelia recurrentis was a major public health problem, especially in eastern Europe and northern Africa (1,2). Currently, poor living conditions, famine, war, and refugee camps are major risk factors for epidemics of LBRF in resource-poor countries, such as those in the Horn of Africa (3,4). Increased migration from resource-poor countries and war/violence create new routes for spread of vectorborne diseases. Recently, several cases of LBRF have been reported among asylum seekers from Eritrea in the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Germany (5–8). All of…

Siciliani al fronte. Lettere dalla Grande Guerra

2017

The First World War is the epochal event that marks the beginning of the twentieth century. This volume aims to investigate the impact…

Letters in Arabic sent from the Nasrid Court. A diplomatic analysis

2018

The factory of letters

2009

Trieste, the city which in a melancholy way, leaning his elbows upon the threshold of the window, looks at the sea, is the seat of the Tassinari/Vetta Studio, where the work completes a coherent cycle made of meticulous devotion to the project, of continuous research and experimentation, quite distant from the transitory trends, but rather firmly anchored to the national and international, graphic and typogra…

Spectrum of pncA Mutations in Multidrug-Resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis Isolates Obtained in Latvia

2004

Pyrazinamide (PZA) is an effective antituberculous agent ([1][1]) that becomes active when bacterial pyrazinamidase converts it to pyrazinoic acid, which is toxic to mycobacteria ([4][2]). In Mycobacerium tuberculosis , PZA resistance is associated with the loss of pyrazinamidase activity, mainly

A free plate model can predict guided modes propagating in tubular bone-mimicking phantoms

2014

The goal of this work was to show that a non-absorbing free plate model can predict with a reasonable accuracy guided modes measured in bone-mimicking phantoms that have circular cross-section. Experiments were carried out on uncoated and coated phantoms using a clinical axial transmission setup. Adjustment of the plate model to the experimental data yielded estimates for the waveguide characteristics (thickness, bulk wave velocities). Fair agreement was achieved over a frequency range of 0.4 to 1.6 MHz. A lower accuracy observed for the thinnest bone-mimicking phantoms was caused by limitations in the wave number measurements rather than by the model itself.
