Characterization and quantitation of mixtures of alkyl ether sulfates and carboxylic acids by capillary electrophoresis with indirect photometric det…
2003
The separation, characterization, and determination of mixtures of alkyl ether sulfates (AES) and fatty acids (C10-C16) in background electrolytes (BGEs) containing acetonitrile (ACN)-water mixtures is addressed. Due to inhibition of the ionization of the carboxylate groups, the migration time and the resolution between the fatty acids decreased when the water content of the BGE was reduced, but efficiency and resolution between the AES oligomers improved. The migration times increased and resolution improved by substituting 5% ACN by an equivalent amount of dioxane. A complete separation of the two surfactant classes, up to the AES oligomers with 8 ethylene oxide units (EOs) with respect t…
Effects of Parietaria judaica pollen extract on human microvascular endothelial cells
2008
Abstract Pollinosis from Parietaria judaica is one of the main causes of allergy in the Mediterranean area. The present study is designed to assess if P. judaica pollens contain bioactive compounds able to elicit a functional response in endothelial cells. We have demonstrated that addition of pollen extract to human lung microvascular endothelial cells (HMVEC-L) induces a modification of cell morphology, actin cytoskeletal rearrangements and an increase in endothelial cell permeability. We further showed that the treatment of endothelial cells with pollen extract causes an increase of E-selectin and VCAM-1 protein levels as well as an increase of IL-8 production. The stimulation of cell–ce…
Determination of muscimol and ibotenic acid in mushrooms of Amanitaceae by capillary electrophoresis
2014
In this study, the CZE method for rapid quantitative and qualitative determination of ibotenic acid and muscimol in Amanita mushrooms naturally grown in Poland was developed. The investigations included the species of A. muscaria, A. pantherina, and A. citrina, collected in southern region of Poland. The studied hallucinogenic compounds were effectively extracted with a mixture of methanol and 1 mM sodium phosphate buffer at pH 3 (1:1 v/v) using ultrasound-assisted procedure. The obtained extracts were separated and determined by CZE utilizing a 25 mM sodium phosphate running buffer adjusted to pH 3 with 5% content of acetonitrile v/v. The calibration curves for both analytes were linear in…
Paesaggio Scotellaro. Materiali per "Cantilena" (e per la prima Rosselli)
2023
The article starts from the intellectual friendship between Rocco Scotellaro and Amelia Rosselli, then proceeds to focus on the early poems by Rosselli (specifically Cantilena. Poesie per Rocco Scotellaro). Rosselli's short poetic text, her Italian debut in 1953, displays the mourning for Scotellaro's early death and portrays a contradictory absence/presence of her friend into the landscape of Basilicata. In our contribution a theme-based analysis is offered. Through close reading, we investigate on Rosselli's sources (Campana, Jung), both identifying cross-references to Scotellaro's poems and proses and reading Cantilena in continuity with her poetic texts up to Diario ottuso.
Low-loading asymmetric organocatalysis
2011
Asymmetric organocatalysis is now recognized as the third pillar of asymmetric synthesis. Recent years have witnessed increasing interest towards the use of highly active and stereoselective organocatalysts. This critical review documents the advances in the development of chiral organocatalysts which are systematically used in ≤3 mol% loading in all the sub-areas of the field, namely aminocatalysis, Brønsted acids and bases, Lewis acids and bases, hydrogen bond-mediated catalysis, phase transfer and N-heterocyclic carbene catalyses (194 references).
Determination of barbiturates in urine by micellar liquid chromatography and direct injection of sample.
2000
Abstract A liquid chromatographic procedure for the determination of six barbiturates (barbital, diallyl barbituric acid, phenobarbital, butabarbital, amobarbital and pentobarbital) in urine samples is described. The proposed system uses a Spherisorb octadecyl-silane ODS-2 C 18 analytical column and a guard column of similar characteristics. The UV detector was set at 240 nm. A study to select adequate composition of the micellar mobile phase for the separation of these compounds in urine samples is performed. Maximum resolution was achieved with a 0.07 M sodium dodecylsulphate-0.3% propanol at pH 7.4 eluent. Limits of detection at 240 nm were ranged between 0.13 μg ml −1 for diallyl barbit…
The sea urchin embryo: a model to study Alzheimer's beta amyloid induced toxicity.
2009
Abstract Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. The cause of AD is closely related to the accumulation of amyloid beta peptide in the neuritic plaques. The use of animal model systems represents a good strategy to elucidate the molecular mechanism behind the development of this pathology. Here we use the Paracentrotus lividus embryo to identify molecules and pathways that can be involved in the degenerative process. As a first step, we identified the presence of an antigen related to the human APP, called Pl APP. This antigen, after gastrula stage, is processed producing a polypeptide of about 10 kDa. By immunohistochemistry we localized the Pl APP antigen in some ser…
Diffusion technique for the generation of gaseous halogen standards
2009
Abstract Halogens are known to play an important role in the tropospheric ozone-depletion chemistry and are of special interest because of their influence on the atmospheric oxidation capacity. In this paper, we investigate the application of a capillary diffusion technique for the generation of gaseous halogen standards like Br 2 , IBr, ICl and I 2 . The influence of capillary dimension (i.e. length and inner diameter), ambient pressure and headspace volume of the diffusion vessel on the test gas output has been evaluated. The experimental output rates are determined from the mass loss of the analyte vessel on a regular schedule and compared with their respective theoretical predictions. W…
In tube-solid phase microextraction-nano liquid chromatography: Application to the determination of intact and degraded polar triazines in waters and…
2017
Abstract In-tube solid-phase microextraction (IT-SPME) coupled to miniaturized liquid chromatography (LC) techniques are attractive mainly due to the column efficiency improvement, sensitivity enhancement and reduction of solvent consumption. In addition, the nanomaterials based sorbents can play a key role in the improvement of the extraction efficiency taking into account their interesting physical and chemical properties. Thus, in this work the performance of IT-SPME coupled to nano LC (NanoLC) has been compared with the performance of IT-SPME coupled to capillary LC (CapLC) with similar configurations for the determination of polar triazines including their degradation products. In both…
