Studies on Regulation of the Peroxisomal β-Oxidation at the 3-Ketothiolase Step

2002

The peroxisomal 3-oxoacyl-CoA thiolase (thiolase) is the last enzyme involved in the β-oxidation of fatty acids. The enzyme cleaves long chain fatty acyl-CoA to generate acetyl-CoA and shortened acyl-CoA. The enzyme is nuclear encoded, synthesized in the cytoplasm and transported into peroxisomes. The thiolase B gene is inducible by the peroxisome proliferator compounds, like other genes involved in β-oxidation of fatty acids in peroxisomes.

A Radical Signal Activates the Epigenetic Regulation of Longevity

2013

Hormesis is an adaptive stress response implicated in longevity regulation. Schroeder et al. (2013) have now connected stress, epigenetic changes, and aging in yeast by showing that mitochondria-derived reactive oxygen species modulate the chromatin binding capacity of the histone demethylase Rph1p at subtelomeres, resulting in lifespan extension.

Methylcellulose-Based Edible Films and Coatings:  2. Mechanical and Thermal Properties as a Function of Plasticizer Content

1997

Several edible films based on methylcellulose and polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG400) were prepared and stored until equilibration at different relative humidities. Tensile stress−strain curves show very different behaviors as a function of PEG400 and relative humidity. Tensile strength strongly depends on relative humidity and then on water content, more than on PEG400 content. On the contrary, elongation is dependent both on water and PEG400. These differences correspond to the glass transition of the polymer, which affects the elongation more than the tensile strength. However, from DSC measurements, it appears that the PEG400 has no or a very low compatibility with the methylcellulose matr…

Effect of irradiation temperature and dose rate on the mechanical tensile behaviour of low density polyethylene

1993

Abstract The effect of ageing due to gamma radiation, at various dose rates and temperatures, on the mechanical tensile behaviour of low density polyethylene is studied. In order to detect synergistic effects, tensile tests on samples subjected to thermal treatment corresponding to the same temperature for the same time as for the irradiation tests have also been performed. The results indicate a generalized decrease of the elongation at break, with brittleness of the material for the most severe ageing treatments. For modulus values, an increase is observed for particular experimental conditions. These results are related to morphological and structural modifications induced in the polymer…

Improvement of the mechanical properties of photo-oxidized films after recycling

2002

Mechanical recycling of post-consumer plastics gives rise, in most cases, to secondary materials with mechanical properties worse than those of the reclaimed polymer. This is mostly due to the thermomechanical treatment undergone during the melt reprocessing operations. In this work, low density polyethylene films have been photo-oxidized in artificial accelerated ageing conditions and then the brittle films have been melt reprocessed. It is shown that the secondary material, after reprocessing, shows mechanical properties, in particular elongation at break, better than those of the photo-oxidized films. This behaviour has been attributed to the fact that the melt reprocessing has the effec…

Biopolymer interactions affect the functional properties of edible films based on agar, cassava starch and arabinoxylan blends

2009

Abstract Edible films based on the binary combination of agar (AG), cassava starch (CAS) and arabinoxylan (AX) were studied with regard to their microstructure, moisture barrier and mechanical properties. Though the films appear macroscopically homogeneous, electron microscopy observations reveal a phase separation and dispersion, respectively, in AG–CAS and AG–AX blend film structures, whereas the structure of CAS–AX blend films seems homogeneous. In case high moisture (84% and 99% RH), neither the combination of AG and CAS nor the addition of AX into CAS can improve film moisture barrier properties, except at a lower RH (57%). Conversely, water vapor permeability (WVP) of AG based film is…

FORMATION OF A SMALL RIBONUCLEOPROTEIN PARTICLE BETWEEN TAT PROTEIN AND TRANS-ACTING RESPONSE ELEMENT IN HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS-INFECTED CELLS

1991

The trans-acting response element (TAR) within the long terminal repeat of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is present in all 5' termini of HIV mRNAs and is recognized by the viral Tat protein. Now we describe that the 59-nucleotide-long TAR-RNA exists as a ribonucleoprotein particle in polysomal and heterogeneous nuclear RNP fractions of HIV-1-infected HeLa-T4+ cells. Applying an immunoprecipitation technique this Tat.TAR complex could be isolated from total cell extracts as well as from polysomal or heterogeneous nuclear RNP fractions. The chain length and the identity of the TAR-RNA were established by RNase protection assays while the Tat protein was confirmed by Western blotting tech…

Effect of the orientation and rheological behaviour of biodegradable polymer nanocomposites

2014

Abstract The recent increasing interest towards biodegradable polymers has favoured the investigation on these systems, showing also their limits. On the other hand, the success achieved by nanocomposites has fostered the search for new systems where the polymer matrix is biodegradable. The final properties can depend on a number of factors, including the biodegradable polymer used as well as the nanosized filler, their mutual compatibility, the filler dispersion and the processing conditions. In this work, nanocomposites based on a starch-derived matrix and three different lamellar silicates were prepared, and the effects of the elongational flow on the dispersion, the improvement of inter…

Compatibilization of a polyethylene/polyamide 6 blend nanocomposite

2014

Polymer blends of incompatible components need to be compatibilized to give rise to a blend with good properties. At the same way, polymer/clay nanocomposites show the same problem because of different chemical nature of the polymer matrix and of the clay. Compatibilization is then necessary if an incompatible polymer blend is filled with an organomodified clay. In this work a polyethylene/polyamide 6 blend filled with an organomodified clay has been compatibilized with a maleic anyhidride grafted SEBS (styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene) copolymer and a glicidylmethacrylate-ethylene copolymer. The results show that compatibilization improves the mechanical properties in terms of elongation …
