The Relation of the Figurativeness to the Avant-Gardism in Pentti Saarikoski’s Political Lyrics of the 1960’s In Saarikoski’s political poems, there are two things combined: figurativeness which is the traditional medium of poetry, and political radicalism. This combination is part of Saarikoski’s “political poetics”. Not much academic research has been carried out about Saarikoski’s lyrics, but it’s been studied earlier by for example Janna Kantola and H. K. Riikonen. In Saarikoski’s political-regarded works of the 1960’s, the most avant-garde-influenced are Mita tapahtuu todella? (“What really happens?”) (1962) and Aaneen (“Aloud”) (1966). According to my interpretation, Mita tapahtuu tod…
Action research into the use of popular music: A goldmine worth exploring in the ELT secondary-school classroom?
2013
Abstract Conducting action research is an excellent way for teachers and teacher trainers to pursue their professional development inside the classroom and for language learners to take part in small-scale research projects. This article presents a study where action research was used in the teaching and learning of English in a Norwegian upper-secondary school. A class of thirty, first-year Vg1 pupils took part in a project to investigate either lexico-grammatical or multimodal features in a selection of popular music while working towards achieving some of the competence aims in the English subject curriculum. The project involved dividing the learners into two groups each of which follo…
Music as an Aid to Learn New Verbal Information in Alzheimer's Disease
2012
the goal of this study is to assess whether new lyrics are better learned and memorized when presented in a spoken or sung form. In normal young adults, mixed results have been reported, with studies showing a positive, a negative, or a null effect of singing on verbal recall. Several factors can account for this limited aid of music. First, the familiarity of the melody might play a role. Second, successive learning sessions and long-term retention intervals may be necessary. These two factors are considered here in a case study of a participant who suffers from mild Alzheimer's disease. As expected, initial learning of new lyrics showed better performance for the spoken condition over the…
Młodzieńcze eksperymenty Józefa Korzeniowskiego z formą dramatyczną
2015
The status of Józef Korzeniowski’s early dramas oscillates around the historical and literary syntheses of his works (the first of which date back to the 1840s) between a modest position of a technical “rehearsal” and a high rank of an innovative dramatic form. Paradoxically, while the old “defensive” reviews do not sound credible today, the “accusatory” statements – when deprived of their judgmental conclusions – offer inspiring suggestions. They are supported by a superior category of lyricism. Yet, it is not the lyricism that institutes the dramatic genre of the lyrical stage (asthe first critics sympathetic to the poet desired), but the lyricism that is expressed in the subjectivity of …

Guillem Godi, "Si·l gen cors d’estieu es remas" (BdT 219.1)
2018
This article offers a new edition, based on Occitan Chansonnier R, of the canso-sirventes Si·l gen cors d’estieu es remas by the troubadour Guillem Godi. Moving from a textual and documentary analysis, as well as a material-philological perspective, the lectura proposes a later date for the composition (late 13th - early 14th century); moreover, a possible identification of the author with the cardinal Guillem de Peire Godin (1260-1336) is cautiously suggested.
2020
In this contribution we shall present some anomalies in the musical notation of the anonymous lyric lais transmitted by French chansonniers M and T (i.e. Kievrefoil, Markiol and Nompar), which share the same source, and to which a recently discovered chansonnier fragment (Bo) can be added. The plural attestation of these heterostrophic texts allows to nuance the strict notion of musical error, advocated by John H. Marshall for this very corpus. Finally, we discuss an interesting case (Nompar, str. X) where musical notation can effectively help the reconstruction of a text corrupted in both witnesses.

This a…
