Influence of magnetization on the applied magnetic field in various AMR regenerators

2017

International audience; The aim of this work is to assess the influence of a magnetic sample on the applied magnetic field inside the air gap of a magnetic circuit. Different magnetic sources including an electromagnet, a permanent magnet in a soft ferromagnetic toroidal yoke, as well as 2D and 3D Halbach cylinders are considered, using a numerical model. Gadolinium is chosen as magnetic material for the sample, due to its strong magnetocaloric properties and its wide use in magnetic refrigeration prototypes. We find that using uniform theoretical demagnetizing factors for cylinders or spheres results in a deviation of less than 2% in the calculation of internal magnetic fields at temperatu…

On the mechanics of magnetic fluids with field-induced phase transition: application to Couette flow

2018

The influence of Brownian diffusion and magnetophoresis, which are followed by phase transition, on the characteristics of a stationary plane Couette flow of magnetic fluid in a non-uniform magnetic field is discussed. The phase transition conditions in magnetic fluids are assumed as a natural restriction to the particle concentration increase in a non-uniform magnetic field. Profiles of the particles' concentration are calculated, and dependences of the volume magnetic force and of the viscous force are established. © 2018 Institute of Physics, University of Latvia.

Quasi-geostrophic jet-like flow with obstructions

2021

International audience; Jet-like flows are ubiquitous in the atmosphere and oceans, and thus a thorough investigation of their behaviour in rotating systems is fundamental. Nevertheless, how they are affected by vegetation or, generally speaking, by obstructions is a crucial aspect which has been poorly investigated up to now. The aim of the present paper is to propose an analytical model developed for jet-like flows in the presence of both obstructions and the Coriolis force. In this investigation the jet-like flow is assumed homogeneous, turbulent and quasi-geostrophic, and with the same density as the surrounding fluid. Laws of momentum deficit, length scales, velocity scales and jet cen…

Transient Transformation of A. thaliana Seedlings by Vacuum Infiltration

2020

Transient expression in Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings allows fast expression of fluorescent markers for different subcellular compartments. This protocol describes a transient transformation assay with five-day-old seedlings using Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated vacuum infiltration. Three days after infiltration of the Agrobacterium containing an expression vector for a fluorescent marker of interest, cotyledon cells expressing the fluorescent protein can be imaged in a confocal microscope. This assay allows high-throughput screening of new constructs and the study of the localization of a large number of subcellular markers in Arabidopsis seedlings including wild-type, stable over-expr…

Boolean computation in plants using post-translational genetic control and a visual output signal

2018

[EN] Due to autotrophic growing capacity and extremely rich secondary metabolism, plants should be preferred targets of synthetic biology. However, developments in plants usually run below those in other taxonomic groups. In this work we engineered genetic circuits capable of logic YES, OR and AND Boolean computation in plant tissues with a visual output signal. The circuits, which are deployed by means of Agrobacterium tumefaciens, perform with the conditional activity of the MYB transcription factor Roseal from Antirrhinum majus inducing the accumulation of anthocyanins, plant endogenous pigments that are directly visible to the naked eye or accurately quantifiable by spectrophotometric a…

Innovative method to estimate state of charge of the hydride hydrogen tank: application of fuel cell electric vehicles

2021

International audience; Significant attention has been paid to metal hydrides (MH) as an environmentally friendly and safe way to store hydrogen. This technology has considerable potential for the application of embedded hydrogen storage in fuel cell electric vehicles, but its widespread application faces a major problem in terms of estimating the remaining hydrogen amount in the tank. In this work, a new method is proposed for estimating the state of charge (SoC) of the hydrogen hydride tank (HHT) by application of piezoelectric material. The idea is to cover the entire inner wall of the metal-hydride tank with a layer of piezoelectric material. During the process of hydrogen absorption, t…

FMF is not always "fever": from clinical presentation to "treat to target".

2020

AbstractFamilial Mediterranean Fever, a monogenic autoinflammatory disease secondary to MEFV gene mutations in the chromosome 16p13, is characterized by recurrent self-limiting attacks of fever, arthritis, aphthous changes in lips and/or oral mucosa, erythema, serositis. It is caused by dysregulation of the inflammasome, a complex intracellular multiprotein structure, commanding the overproduction of interleukin 1. Familial Mediterranean Fever can be associated with other multifactorial autoinflammatory diseases, as vasculitis and Behçet disease.Symptoms frequently start before 20 years of age and are characterized by a more severe phenotype in patients who begin earlier.Attacks consist of …

Effects of a Lactobacillus salivarius mixture on performance, intestinal health and serum lipids of broiler chickens

2017

The ban or severe restriction on the use of antibiotics in poultry feeds to promote growth has led to considerable interest to find alternative approaches. Probiotics have been considered as such alternatives. In the present study, the effects of a Lactobacillus mixture composed from three previously isolated Lactobacillus salivarius strains (CI1, CI2 and CI3) from chicken intestines on performance, intestinal health status and serum lipids of broiler chickens has been evaluated. Supplementation of the mixture at a concentration of 0.5 or 1 g kg-1 of diet to broilers for 42 days improved body weight, body weight gain and FCR, reduced total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides, inc…

Tubercle disease of sugar beet roots (Beta vulgaris) found in Poland is neither caused by Xanthomonas beticola nor by tumorigenic Agrobacterium/Rhizo…

2018

Symptoms of tubercle disease known also as Xanthomonas gall were noticed in Poland in 2014–2017. Roots with disease symptoms showed the reduction of sucrose content compared to the healthy ones. In the literature, there are two gall diseases described: tubercle disease (also known as Xanthomonas gall) and crown gall, which is caused by Rhizobium radiobacter (syn. Agrobacterium tumefaciens). None of the bacterial strains isolated from the malformed tissues were identified as the bacterial pathogen responsible for causing Xanthomonas gall or crown gall. The result was confirmed by searching for the presence of T-DNA, which was not found. Our conclusion is that the tubercle disease observed in…
