Carriage of potentially fish-pathogenic bacteria in Sparus aurata cultured in Mediterranean fish farms.

2003

A bacteriological survey of gilthead sea bream Sparus aurata from different fish farms and culture systems on the Spanish Mediterranean coast was conducted. Three different studies were performed. Study A included hatchery-reared larvae; Study B, periodic examination of randomly sampled growing fish; and Study C, growing fish sampled only during mortality/morbidity events. In Studies B and C, sea cages, earth ponds and indoor tanks were surveyed, and in both cases diseased (showing clinical signs) and non-diseased fish were included. In Study A, a shift from Vibrio spp. (30 d after hatching) to oxidative species (60 d after hatching) was detected, and no mortality events were registered. Th…

Numerical Taxonomy of Vibrionaceae Isolated from Cultured Amberjack ( Seriola dumerili ) and Surrounding Water

2003

A numerical taxonomic study was performed on 148 isolates of Gram-negative, heterotrophic, facultative anaerobic bacteria isolated from amberjack (Seriola dumerili) and its surrounding culture water. The study included 30 type and reference strains belonging to genera Vibrio, Listonella, and Photobacterium. The strains were characterized by 109 morphological, biochemical, physiological, and nutritional tests. Cluster analysis of similarity matrices obtained with S(SM) and S(J) coefficients was carried out. UPGMA (unweighted pair group mathematical average) analysis defined 11 phena at S(SM) values > or = 86%. Nine phena were identified as Vibrio alginolyticus, V. fischeri, V. harveyi, V. ca…

Priežu lāna zemsedzes veģetācijas uzskaites metodes analīze ilgtermiņa ekoloģisko pētījumu parauglaukumā

2020

Evidence that water transmits the disease caused by the fish pathogen Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae

2000

The transmission through water of the disease caused by the fish pathogen, Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae, as well as the role of the skin mucus in the initial steps of the infection, have been studied. All tested strains resisted the bactericidal activity of the mucus and showed an ability to adhere to it, but only those virulent by the intraperitoneal route were infective through water. Moribund fishes showed the typical signs of the disease: haemorrhaged areas on the body surface and ulcerative lesions with mucus degradation. These results suggest that the pathogen can be transmitted to fish through water and use the skin as a portal of entry.

Crystalline wax coverage of the imaginal cuticle inCalopteryx splendens(Odonata: Calopterygidae)

2009

Abstract In this study we use high resolution SEM to describe the diversity of wax crystals and their distribution on different morphological structures in male individuals of Calopteryx splendens. The entire cuticle surface of this damselfly, with the exception of ommatidia and ocelli, is covered with crystalline wax in dimensions from submicron to micron range. It is shown that shape - rod-like, plate like, filamentous, etc. -, size, and density of crystals vary on different surfaces and in individuals of different ages. Additionally, we demonstrate different types of damage to the crystalline wax layer: scratches, compressions, wear, and contamination. The primary function of the wax cry…

Interspecific territoriality in Calopteryx damselflies: the role of secondary sexual characters

2006

Interspecific territoriality is usually interpreted to result from interspecific interference competition, although it may also originate from mistaken species recognition. In the latter case, it may be based on similarity of secondary sexual characters. In the damselfly Calopteryx splendens, males have pigmented wing spots as a sexual character, and males with the largest spots resemble males of another species, Calopteryx virgo. Probably because of this resemblance, C. virgo males are more aggressive towards large- than small-spotted C. splendens males. We examined whether wing spot size of C. splendens males affects territorial interactions between the species. In a removal experiment, t…

Within this framework Palermo and its historic center are no exception. The epicenter of these processes is represented here by the Kalsa district which since the early 2000s has been placed at the center of a precise strategy of culturally-based renewal called to drive the city's tourist renaissance (Vinci 2008). The culmination of this path came in 2018 when Palermo was named the Italian capital of culture and chosen as the venue for Manifesta one of the most prestigious traveling biennales of contemporary art. However the exponential increase in tourist arrivals in the last three years came to a halt with the outbreak of the pandemic which showed with unprecedented evidence the contradictions of the development strategies pursued in the historic center and the marks they leave on the territories. While this sudden interruption seems to offer an opportunity to radically rethink urban and cultural policies and find new curbs to the conditions of overtourism in which the historic centers of South European cities and beyond find themselves it could also prove to be an accelerator of the dynamics of commodification of these spaces representing the revival of tourism an easy escape route in times of crisis. The objective of this contribution is to critically explore the urban and social transformations that have crossed the Kalsa district of Palermo from the 2000s to the present using qualitative and quantitative techniques (analysis of statistical data in-depth interviews critical discourse analysis ...) with particular reference to the role that culture has played in these processes. While it is impossible to prefigure post-pandemic scenarios we will examine documents and discourses that trace possible development directions for South European cities and their historic centers.Settore ICAR/21 - UrbanisticaSettore M-GGR/01 - Geografia

Learning Bag of Spatio-Temporal Features for Human Interaction Recognition

2019

Bag of Visual Words Model (BoVW) has achieved impressive performance on human activity recognition. However, it is extremely difficult to capture high-level semantic meanings behind video features with this method as the spatiotemporal distribution of visual words is ignored, preventing localization of the interactions within a video. In this paper, we propose a supervised learning framework that automatically recognizes high-level human interaction based on a bag of spatiotemporal visual features. At first, a representative baseline keyframe that captures the major body parts of the interacting persons is selected and the bounding boxes containing persons are extracted to parse the poses o…

Managing biotic interactions for ecological intensification of agroecosystems.

2014

9 pages; International audience; Agriculture faces the challenge of increasing food production while simultaneously reducing the use of inputs and delivering other ecosystem services. Ecological intensification of agriculture is a paradigm shift, which has recently been proposed to meet such challenges through the manipulation of biotic interactions. While this approach opens up new possibilities, there are many constraints related to the complexity of agroecosystems that make it difficult to implement. Future advances, which are essential to guide agricultural policy, require an eco-evolutionary framework to ensure that ecological intensification is beneficial in the long term.
