Partialsynthese neuer Ergolinderivate aus Clavinalkaloiden, 2. Mitt.1) O-Acyl-8-hydroxymethyl-6-methylergol-8-ene und -ergol-9-ene
1983
Partial Synthesis of New Ergoline Derivatives from Clavine Alkaloids, II: O-Acyl-8-(hydroxymethyl)-6-methylergol-8-enes and -ergol9-enes The title compounds can be prepared by acylation of elymoclavine (1) and lysergole (2), respectively, with acid chlorides or, in the case of the esters of 2, by isomerization of O-acyl-1 with activated Al2,O3. On the other hand, in cer…
New Alkenylresorcinols with Cytotoxic and Antimicrobial Activities from the Leaves of Embelia schimperi.
2020
AbstractA phytochemical study of the methanol extract of the leaves of Embelia schimperi resulted in the isolation of three new alkenylresorcinols, 1 – 3, together with the known analogs 4 – 7. Their structures were established by a combination of spectroscopic techniques. Compounds 1 – 7 exhibited moderate cytotoxic activity against human cervical cancer cells HeLa-S3 and more pronounced antimicrobial properties towards bacteria and filamentous fungi. The present study falls into an ongoing research project on the characterization of bioactive phenolic lipids from plants of the family Primulaceae.

From ethnobotany to experimental research: the therapeutic properties of Sicilian hellebore
2018
In Sicily, the genus Helleborus (Ranuculaceae) is only represented by H. bocconei subsp. siculus (= H. bocconei subsp. intermedius). In some mountain areas of the Island, the rhizomes of this plant, harvested in a particular month of the year (May) and dried, are used in traditional veterinary practice for treating pneumonia in domestic animals, cattle and horses in particular. The same usage – with rhizomes of other Helleborus species or subspecies – is reported from various other areas of Mediterranean Europe. Phytochemical tests have permitted the isolation and characterization of new biologically active molecules. The extracts of rhizomes and aerial parts of the plant were shown antibac…
Flotillin-involved uptake of silica nanoparticles and responses of an alveolar-capillary barrier in vitro
2013
AbstractDrug and gene delivery via nanoparticles across biological barriers such as the alveolar-capillary barrier of the lung constitutes an interesting and increasingly relevant field in nanomedicine. Nevertheless, potential hazardous effects of nanoparticles (NPs) as well as their cellular and systemic fate should be thoroughly examined. Hence, this study was designed to evaluate the effects of amorphous silica NPs (Sicastar) and (poly)organosiloxane NPs (AmOrSil) on the viability and the inflammatory response as well as on the cellular uptake mechanisms and fate in cells of the alveolar barrier. For this purpose, the alveolar epithelial cell line (NCI H441) and microvascular endothelial…
Synthesis and biological activity of novel sialyl-lewisX conjugates
1996
Abstract Novel sialyl Lewis X conjugates have been synthesized and evaluated as inhibitors of E- and P-selectin mediated cell adhesion in cell culture assays. The most potent conjugate in the static inhibition assays exhibited a significant and dose-dependent pharmacological potency as inhibitor of the edotoxin-induced leukocyte adhesion to the endothelium of postcapillary venules in rats.
Expression Profile of Endoglin in Different Grades of Endometrial Cancer
2019
Background Endoglin is a marker of active, proliferating endothelial cells of blood vessels. In many cancers, it is present in both peripheral vessels and vessels located inside the tumor. Endoglin is more specific and sensitive compared to other tumor angiogenesis markers. It is suggested that endoglin can be considered a reliable marker of disease outcome. Objective The aim of the study was to assess the expression of endoglin and to determine its potential usefulness as a complementary molecular marker of endometrial cancer. Method The study included 60 women who underwent hysterectomy: 45 with endometrioid endometrial cancer (study group) and 15 without neoplastic changes (control group…
Modulation of Diabetes by Natural Products and Medicinal Plants via Incretins
2019
Incretins are metabolic hormones released after a meal that increase insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells. The two main incretins are the intestinal peptides glucagon-like peptide-1 and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide. Both induce a decrease in glycemia, slow down the absorption of nutrients, and are inactivated by the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase-4. Recently, incretin-based therapies have become a useful tool to treat diabetic patients, and different studies have focused on the identification of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, including those of natural origin. This review focuses on the new findings of medicinal plants and natural products as possible active ag…
Altitude exposure in sports: the Athlete Biological Passport standpoint
2013
The Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) is principally founded on monitoring an athlete's biological variables over time, to identify abnormal biases on a longitudinal basis. Several factors are known to influence the results of these markers. However, the manner in which the altitude factor is taken into account still needs to be standardized. Causal relationships between haematological variables should be correctly integrated into ABP software. In particular, modifications of haematological parameters during and after exposure to different altitudes/hypoxic protocols need to be properly included within detection models.
