Fundamental Noise Limits and Sensitivity of Piezoelectrically Driven Magnetoelastic Cantilevers

2020

International audience; Magnetoelastic sensors for the detection of low-frequency and low-amplitude magnetic fields are in the focus of research for more than 30 years. In order to minimize the limit of detection (LOD) of such sensor systems, it is of high importance to understand and to be able to quantify the relevant noise sources. In this contribution, cantilever-type electromechanical and magnetoelastic resonators, respectively, are comprehensively investigated and mathematically described not only with regard to their phase sensitivity but especially to the extent of the sensor-intrinsic phase noise. Both measurements and calculations reveal that the fundamental LOD is limited by addi…

Color centers in diamond as novel probes of superconductivity

2018

Magnetic imaging using color centers in diamond through both scanning and wide-field methods offers a combination of unique capabilities for studying superconductivity, for example, enabling accurate vector magnetometry at high temperature or high pressure, with spatial resolution down to the nanometer scale. The paper briefly reviews various experimental modalities in this rapidly developing nascent field and provides an outlook towards possible future directions.

A Local Study of the Transport Mechanisms in MoS2 Layers for Magnetic Tunnel Junctions

2018

MoS2-based vertical spintronic devices have attracted an increasing interest thanks to theoretical predictions of large magnetoresistance signals. However, experimental performances are still far from expectations. Here, we carry out the local electrical characterization of thin MoS2 flakes in a Co/Al2O3/MoS2 structure through conductive tip AFM measurements. We show that thin MoS2 presents a metallic behavior with a strong lateral transport contribution that hinders the direct tunnelling through thin layers. Indeed, no resistance dependence is observed with the flake thickness. These findings reveal a spin depolarization source in the MoS2-based spin valves, thus pointing to possible solut…

Photoionization cross sections of the 5S1/2 and 5P3/2 states of Rb in simultaneous magneto-optical trapping of Rb and Hg

2018

We report the measurement of the photoionization cross sections of the $5{S}_{1/2}$ and $5{P}_{3/2}$ states of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ in a two-species Hg and Rb magneto-optical trap (MOT) by the cooling laser for Hg. The photoionization cross sections of Rb in the $5{S}_{1/2}$ and $5{P}_{3/2}$ states at 253.7 nm are determined to be ${1}_{\ensuremath{-}1}^{+4.3}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}20}\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}{\text{cm}}^{2}$ and $4.63(30)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}18}\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}{\text{cm}}^{2}$, respectively. To measure the $5{S}_{1/2}$ and $5{P}_{3/2}$ state fractions in the MOT we detected the photoionization rat…

Controlled time integration for the numerical simulation of meteor radar reflections

2016

We model meteoroids entering the Earth[U+05F3]s atmosphere as objects surrounded by non-magnetized plasma, and consider efficient numerical simulation of radar reflections from meteors in the time domain. Instead of the widely used finite difference time domain method (FDTD), we use more generalized finite differences by applying the discrete exterior calculus (DEC) and non-uniform leapfrog-style time discretization. The computational domain is presented by convex polyhedral elements. The convergence of the time integration is accelerated by the exact controllability method. The numerical experiments show that our code is efficiently parallelized. The DEC approach is compared to the volume …

A Lightweight Prototype of a Magnetometric System for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

2021

Detection of the Earth’s magnetic field anomalies is the basis of many types of studies in the field of earth sciences and archaeology. These surveys require different ways to carry out the measures but they have in common that they can be very tiring or expensive. There are now several lightweight commercially available magnetic sensors that allow light-UAVs to be equipped to perform airborne measurements for a wide range of scenarios. In this work, the realization and functioning of an airborne magnetometer prototype were presented and discussed. Tests and measures for the validation of the experimental setup for some applications were reported. The flight sessions, appropriately programm…

Plasma sloshing in pulse-heated solar and stellar coronal loops

2016

There is evidence that coronal heating is highly intermittent, and flares are the high energy extreme. The properties of the heat pulses are difficult to constrain. Here hydrodynamic loop modeling shows that several large amplitude oscillations (~ 20% in density) are triggered in flare light curves if the duration of the heat pulse is shorter that the sound crossing time of the flaring loop. The reason is that the plasma has not enough time to reach pressure equilibrium during the heating and traveling pressure fronts develop. The period is a few minutes for typical solar coronal loops, dictated by the sound crossing time in the decay phase. The long period and large amplitude make these os…

Magnetic shuffling of coronal downdrafts

2017

Channelled fragmented downflows are ubiquitous in magnetized atmospheres, and have been recently addressed from an observation after a solar eruption. We study the possible back-effect of the magnetic field on the propagation of confined flows. We compare two 3D MHD simulations of dense supersonic plasma blobs downfalling along a coronal magnetic flux tube. In one, the blobs move strictly along the field lines; in the other, the initial velocity of the blobs is not perfectly aligned to the magnetic field and the field is weaker. The aligned blobs remain compact while flowing along the tube, with the generated shocks. The misaligned blobs are disrupted and merged by the chaotic shuffling of …

Origin and Ion Charge State Evolution of Solar Wind Transients during 4 – 7 August 2011

2016

We present study of the complex event consisting of several solar wind transients detected by Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) on 4 -- 7 August 2011, that caused a geomagnetic storm with Dst$=-$110 nT. The supposed coronal sources -- three flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) occurred on 2 -- 4 August 2011 in the active region (AR) 11261. To investigate the solar origin and formation of these transients we studied kinematic and thermodynamic properties of the expanding coronal structures using the Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (SDO/AIA) EUV images and the differential emission measure (DEM) diagnostics. The Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) magnetic fie…
