On the mechanics of progress in primary education
2003
03045; International audience; As countries grow rich, education improves in many ways. The sector enjoys more resources for education per primary school-aged child, not because of bigger budget allocations, nor an easing of the demographic burden on the system, but because the cost of inputs, especially teacher salaries, decline substantially relative to the per capita GNP. The extra resources enable countries to expand coverage and reduce the pupil–teacher ratio, with the latter receiving increasing emphasis during the past 20 years. The implicit trade-off against coverage raises questions about the efficiency and equity of education policies in developing countries, particularly in setti…
Questions d'alphabétisation dans le contexte africain
2012
Despite the proportion of illiterate people in sub-Saharan Africa having declined between 1985 and 2008, the number of illiterates has actually increased during the period. It is within this context, that since April 2000, the international community has been committed to six Education for All goals. One of these goals is to achieve a 50 per cent improvement in adult literacy levels by 2015. This thesis aims to analyse how primary education and literacy programs (two processes on which educational policy can intervene) enable the populations of sub-Saharan Africa to acquire basic reading skills. In the vast majority of African countries, the analysis based on household surveys shows that sc…
1997
This article analyses first the variety in the characteristics of local school inspectorates both in the quantitative (number of teachers) and in the qualitative (social background and geographic dispersion) dimensions. In relation to these, the article examines tne level of endowment (staffing and material) of the inpectorates and concludes to the lack of relationship between the resources mobilized and the needs at the local level. Then the practises of the inspectors and of their teams are described and here again a wide variety does exist across the different inspectorates in the administrative, relational and pedagogical dimensions of their activity (this variety in practices shows no …
2000
Azzedine Si Moussa - The primary education inspection reports, contents and objectives : an exemple in La Reunion. From a sample of primary education inspection reports of the Reunion academy, we aim to show how these reports could reflect the accuracy of pedagogical activities and the needs in teacher training. The logistic procedures also highlight that, for example, the probability for obtaining a bad remark about the application of a differential pedagogical approach is more significant among male teachers, at the CP level and in particular districts. The results provide some questions about the issues and the relevance of the current way of making inspection.
Les classes à plusieurs cours
1998
Multigrade teaching in primary education has often been criticized because this context was assumed to be detrimental for student learning. After having shown that this assumption was empirically wrong, the paper stresses that students who went through this type of education at the primary level perform (better learning and less repetition) also better in lower secondary school.

International audience; To favour secondary school performances of low achievers, it could be advisable to change teaching either from primary level, to help pupils to enter secondary school or at secondary level to back up the adjustment of less able pupils. We can endeavour to modify endogenous variables affecting learning process. Among these, time provision between various activities at both primary and secondary levels, is an especially relevent factor. To favour secondary school performances of low achievers, it could be advisable to change teaching either from primary level, to help pupils to enter secondary school or at secondary level to back up the adjustment of less able pupils. …
1998
International audience; The use and time allocation in primary schools seems to be an interesting factor in improving the results of pupils who have difficulties at the beginning of lower secondary education. Some uses of time allocation in CM2 in particular are in fact more effective than others, as they produce specific knowledges for each subject as well as abilities relevant to more than one subject. This abilities could be useful for pupils entering lower secondary education.
